"Mole" says $400 40GB PS3 (and more) coming this holiday season
This one's firmly in the rumor category, but Ars Technica is reporting that its "mole" had gotten wind of some fairly big plans Sony has in store for this holiday season, not the least of which is a new 40GB PlayStaiton 3 that would retail for $400. What's more, this source says that Sony will also be dropping the price of the 80GB PS3 to $500, and that one or both will come bundled with a Blu-ray version of Spider-Man 3. If that's not enough, Ars Technica is also reporting that Sony will be dropping the price of the tried and true PS2 to a mere $100, which is a rather roundabout way to ensure backwards compatibility but a welcome price drop nonetheless. While Sony's obviously remaining mum on the matter, as both Ars and Joystiq point out, the Tokyo Game Show later this month would seem to be a likely opportunity for it to get official with things, if it in fact has anything to get official with.[Via Joystiq]

now if they would drop the price of a High-Def TV to go along with that shiny new Blu-ray player. It plays games too? :p
Look at for the numerous HDTVs on sale during the same time as well.
Jeez, if they lowered the price of smaller screen HD TVs any lower, they be giving them away. How cheap do you need? Get some inexpensive brand Vizio or Olevia or refurb or something. It'll be a couple of years before you can get a medium size 42 inch plasma new for $300.
"it plays games too?"
lol
They need to drop the price on this more. I will get a $199 HD DVD.
how will backwards compatibility be implemented in the 40GB model? I assume the emotion chips are out for good now? :(
Sweet, I need one of these...
Just picked up the 50 inch 1080p Samsung FP-T5084 Plasma.
i don't recommend games with plasmas.
I am not a huge gamer, but a little bit here and there and that is fine for a plasma.
Plus I want it for the Blu-Ray player.
u think I can get a $100.00 gift card for the Sony store b/c of the price drop???
Every day I wait, the prices/packages get better.
Must... resist... breaking...
£200 for a ps3? I wonder what that will do to the folding@home ps3 stats? :)
desperate times call for desperate measures... good time to be a picky consumer... ill wait to see XBOX's answer.. ;)
ray, i agree with you. i am sure it will be a response from microsoft. i can see it now a premium unit for $300.
Wow, near $300 loss per box? haha. Oh well. I should have waited to get mine, I would have saved some coinage.
MOLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can I get one with the option of no Spider-man 3? I don't need a hi-def version of Emo-Parker.
@Ray
i'd hardly say they're depserate times, i think the last numbers i saw from NPD of sales from xbox vs 360 was 159k vs 150k in favor of the xbox. Not too bad considering that the ps3 was retailing for 25% more. This price, plus some of the upcoming big name blu ray titles for ps3...i wouldn't be surprised if 1 year from now, ps3 is grossly outselling xbox.
@ whowhatme
from what i understand, they're gone for good. which i dont think is a bad thing, i guess something like 70-80% of the titles work already, and with all the updates that sony does on the ps3, they can "fix" incompatibility in the future. so i guess if you have a game that doesn't work, just wait a while and in time it will...
if BDA still offers the 5 free movies when/if they drop the price, man...id def pick one up if i didn't have one
No thanks. It's a game machine without any decent games--which is probably why they're packaging it with a movie.
They're packaging it with a movie to show off the benefits of Blu-Ray. People won't buy a PS3 for a movie player, they'll buy it for the games.
Believe it or not, there's games for it. Just not ones that you want right now.
Right. I was thinking Lair might be a worthwhile title--but it got slaughtered in reviews. I would consider it an investment for the future if I knew more really good games were coming that weren't also coming to the 360. I would consider acquiring it as a Blu-Ray player if I knew it was going to be Profile 2.0 compatible--but there's been no official confirmation of that yet.
No good games on PS3 eh? You keep telling yourself that. I'll be here playing Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Virtua Fighter 5, Motorstorm, Resistance, Calling all cars, Super Stardust HD.
Not bad for a system that's only 10 months old. What did Xbox have when it was 10 months old? Call of Duty 2 and Project Gotham Racing 3.
For that matter, what good original games from Nintendo have we seen in 10 months? Zelda and Metroid. From my perspective, PS3 is doing pretty good, and definitely holding its own against the competition. With this price drop, combined with the fact that the PS3 is a sturdy built system and doesn't break like Xbox, i'd say it has a bright future with respect to its gaming-abilities.
You keep believing that.
I dunno guys. I'm still waiting for the 30GB PS3, personally. Until then... I just don't know what I'll do.
A Benjamin for PS2! I am so there! I was already thinking of buying it (gots to have me some God of War) and if they're really gonna drop the price to a $100 that's gonna seal the deal. As for PS3, I'll consider buying it when this so called gaming system will have any decent games for it, and as for a "cheap BR player" - wait another few months and you'll be able to get a combo HD/BR for the same price.
tell me a system that great games within its first year of launch???

This would be a VERY NICE
I myself would enjoy buying a brand new xbox in a redesigned case, quieter and cooler for $100. Microsoft shouldn't have ceased production. I have to hunt down used ones for my friends who are just coming around to XBMC.
An option, which has non-HDD PS3 and OS-Install Disk (blu-ray) would be fine too :)
price around 200$

sorry for the double post.
I own both and the Xbox 360's launch titles absolutely CRUSHED the PS3's one good title (Resistance). PGR3, Madden, Condemned, Amped, NBA 2K, COD 2, Perfect Dark Zero, Need for Speed Most Wanted.
Still to this day, Resistance is the only game worth buying. Virtua Fighter is the sold old rehash, Motostorm has floaty physics, Warhawk is online only. Heavenly Sword (the demo was a mindless s button masher) is comes out tomorrow so I'm not sure how that counts.
My PS3 is a $600 Blu-Ray player.
@rock stone
i agree with you xbox really wanted to force people into the 360 by discontinuing the xbox. i still want to buy one to this day just so i can buy the original halo and play online.
@whatthef...you're saying that resistance is the only game worth buying?
i guess all the reviews that i've seen for warhawk that have 9.0, 9.5+/10 i guess all those magazines and tv shows didn't know what the hell they're talking about. get your head outta your ass. Out of all the titles that you listed, please be mindful, that the majority were ports/ multiplatforum. Multiplatforms dont sell consoles.
The fact that you mentioned Calling All Cars, a dinky arcade title that came out months after the PS3's release, just show how anemic the PS3's lineup is.
I'm a big MGS fan and I like the Blu-Ray feature of the PS3, but Sony is going to be playing catchup for a long time until they release some exclusive AAA, next-gen titles. I'm taking God of War, Sly Cooper, Daxter, Ratchet & Clank...
Re: whatthef,
Ha, well sorry you don't like cartooney games like calling all cars, but I think it's great fun. I mentioned it because it, as well as Super Stardust HD are two examples of good original and cheap games that Sonys PSN has made available since its release.
Again, for only having been out for 10 months, the PS3 has had more than a few good hits. Maybe not AAA, but good nonetheless. Motorstorms physics are part of the reason why it's good. Off-road racing games typically play like that. In fact, it reminds me a lot of the way the Burnout series plays. It's a fun, arcade racing game, with fantastic graphics.
Now, you mentioned Perfect Dark Zero as one of the titles that "absolutely crushed" the PS3 launch, am I correct? Well, I don't know if you've ever even played perfect dark zero, but that game was, and still is a disaster both in the single player and online. The games AI was some of the worst I've seen in a game. Combine that with glitches that cause the main character to get stuck, and bounce around. Sometimes triggers would not activate properly. I could go on and on. That game got an average score of 81% on www.gamerankings.com and I definitely wouldn't say it helped crush anything that the PS3 has. Resistance, for instance, blows it away in every aspect.
Like I said, Xbox 360's launch had two good games--Call of Duty 2 and Project Gotham Racing 3. And, I didn't point this out, but Call of Duty 2 was also available on the PC. So, that one is debatably multiplatform, but I still count it since it did help sell the 360 initially. The rest of your list is very debatable.
I love your critique of Heavenly Sword also. That it is a button masher. Uh, hello, that game is designed to be like that. Just like almost all modern action games--Ninja Gaiden Sigma, God of War, Prince of Persia, and to a lesser degree even the Tomb Raider series involves a lot of button mashing to perform combos. And, from what the official reviews that I've read, they didn't have a problem with it at all.
And, it wasn't until I read your opinion of VF5 that your fanboy colors started to really show. Calling that game an old rehash obviously shows you either don't like fighting games or you are an idiot fantard. VF5 is arguably the best fighting game out right now. And, it is scheduled to receive a much-needed online patch, which will make it even better.
I'm sorry, but from my experience in the HS demo... if you button mash your going to get very little out of the game but dead.
Umm Super Stardust is not an original title, its an upgraded port of an Amiga and CD32 game...
I wish this is right.
400$ for 40gb.
great deal
This price drop will be good news for my friends. They've been hoping the 360 Premium would drop to $300. And now their wait will be over.
re: Silverfrog
You must be out of your mind. How can you possibly argue that the PS3 has had a better line up ten months in past the 360? For one, an 81% is a good score, two, everyone's qualms were mainly with the single player, online was alot of fun and alot of people still play. Secondly, not only did the 360 have CoD 2 (PC gamers thats great they had it, but all 360 owners were able to enjoy the same level of performance that PC owners have to maintain their PCs for), and PGR 3, which as I should point out received astounding reviews, but also Condemned, OBLIVION (how did anyone forget this, don't gimme that its multiplatform BS either, my comp wouldn't be able to handle Oblivion like my 360 did), Farcry, LOTR: BFME, Prey, and more games that covered a lot of genres. Add this to the fact that games like gears of war and splinter cell DA were around the corner and compare it to what? Drake's island adventure or whatever its called? The lineup for PS3 in 08, I'll admit is looking good, but 07 was not a good year for Sony.
I'd say that even with a price drop, Sony is still screwed- Hell, their newest "AAA" game, Lair, got rated extremely low. 1 step forward, and another back...
I have a vizio 32 lcd tv that supports 1080i. Does the playstation 3 work with 1080i or just 1080p? Will I lose graphic quality with 1080i?
Thanks
