LaCie lays out 500GB Golden Disk external HDD
Just in case LaCie's LEGO / Porsche-inspired hard drives don't excite you, the firm is apparently looking to snatch your business another way: by gilding an external HDD and waving it in your grille. The Golden Disk itself is an exclusive designed by French designer Ora-Ïto, and includes 500GB of storage, PC / Mac compatibility, a USB 2.0 interface, and LaCie's own 1-Click backup software to boot. Not much else to mention besides the price, so go on and get your $189 ready for an October landing, ya heard?

Trying desperately to come up with a Willy Wonka joke but just can't tie it to hard drives...

It's won't blend like a Willy Wonka Chocolate bar will.

Hmmm...If I ever want a blingin' hard drive with a not-very-impressive capacity and a not-modular design (please fire the guy who decided to make the top all warped and thus unstackable) I will pick this up. I will probably roll on dubs to Fry's to get it.

I love Gooooooold!

Cool design. More artistic than ghetto, thank goodness. And not a bad price.

I like the top design - looks like the surface of a lake. Only downside is that if I look too long at it I feel the need to pee.

Auric Goldfinger: You know nothing, Mr. Bond.
James Bond: Operation Grand Slam, for instance.
Auric Goldfinger: Two words you may have overheard, which cannot have the slightest significance to you or anyone in your organization.
James Bond: Can you afford to take that chance?
Auric Goldfinger: [thinks for a moment, then orders the laser switched off] You are quite right, Mr. Bond. You are worth more to me alive.
[a technician approaches Bond, and fires a tranquilzer dart into his chest. Bond collapses into unconsciosness]

I wonder how this looks un-photoshopped, guess I'll have to visit a shop to find that out.

I have a LaCie 500GB USB drive (the F.A. Porsche drab-gray design; not this slick & wavy gold case). It's pretty solid. However their 1-click "backup software" is relatively useless, with no incremental backups or any other refinement. It's just as easy (and more reassuring) to just use Windows Explorer to initiate the backup.
artifex @ Sep 11th 2007 8:31PM
Ok, not stackable and the wavy bits look like they won't line up if they're put in a grid pattern instead. Does the device even have a fan?
Definitely form over function.

Only USB 2.0. That only wins it the Bronze.
I LOVE THE CAPS LOCK KEY @ Sep 11th 2007 9:30PM
Yep, it definitely needs eSATA, 802.11, 1394b, USB 2.0 and a Gigabit Ethernet port to win my heart. Otherwise, No soup for you LaCie.
(But still cool looking)

Looks to me like it's made out of the T-1000. How do I know this thing wasn't sent back in time from the future to kill me?
Matt @ Sep 11th 2007 9:39PM
LEGOs are waay better.
rigo @ Sep 11th 2007 10:01PM

How am I supposed to stack this? Does La Cie have some mystic customer data that says most people only buy one external drive?
Mike @ Sep 12th 2007 1:09PM
Gold drive doesn't stack. If it did, you would not see the shiny, shiny...
If you want to stack, buy something else. I'm sure Lacie has something.
chay @ Sep 12th 2007 3:53PM
These LaCie drives get really hot when stacked (despite the porche one being designed to be stackable.)
Perhaps this design will stop people from stacking them up and frying their data.
