AMD licenses graphics technology to Qualcomm
We first got wind of AMD's wishes to boost the graphical prowess of handsets way back in February of this year (and saw it reaffirmed in March), and now it seems that the firm is making it happen. Apparently, AMD has agreed to license "cutting-edge graphics core technology to Qualcomm" for next-generation chipsets. The deal will reportedly bring AMD's Unified Shader Architecture (introduced in the Xbox 360) to Qualcomm's Mobile Station Modem chipsets, which both firms hope will boost the adoption of 3D gaming and graphic-intensive applications on mobiles. Sadly, we're still left to wonder when we'll see a device actually take advantage of the horsepower, but at least it's in motion.

Hope it works out for AMD - they still seem to be behind Intel despite releasing their new processors.

I hope this means that they make manufacturers make phones that have LCD's with high pixels per inch and break us out of this obsession with QVGA that the manufacturers currently have.
The human eye can resolve up to 1200 pixels per inch (which is enough for HDTV on a 2 inch display .. hold the phone 10 inches from eye).
Yeah 2 incehs is too small --maybe .. but what about HDTV on a 3.5" inch display .. it'll at least be good for web browsing.
I think the iPhone and Nokia E90 are the only phones that may have higher than QVGA resolution.

Just because the chipset can do it doesn't mean the display can.

where have you been?
ok the E90 is pretty crazy with the 800x352 resolution
but the iPhone is only HVGA (320x480)
There have been a number of Windows Mobile phones with VGA (some WVGA) resolutions
unfortunately the bad line up of phones in North America will hide that fact I guess

Yes, go amd!
JohnTitor @ Oct 3rd 2007 12:52AM
go ATi!

Not really much of a surprise given ATI powers graphics on several Qualcomm based HTC phones.
