Canon issues recall on PowerShot A650 IS for China, US to follow?
Getting some nasty light in your PowerShot A650 IS pictures? Finding that no amount of Photoshop retouching can make your family photos look decent? Well, take heart -- in might not be your fault. Canon has issued a recall for the aforementioned camera, due to a defect when shooting with the Vari-Angle LCD display under sunny conditions which allows light to leak through the body and cause image problems. The company's US branch has yet to issue a statement, though Canon China has made the recall official, and we're guessing other regions will follow suit. That is, we hope they will -- we've got some familial engagements coming up, and those pictures need to look awesome.
Update: Indeed, the recall affects US customers too.

I had a Canon Powershot that was recalled (for a different reason) some years ago. I never sent it in. Why? Because the recall was about the same time of year as this (late Oct. actually) and they stated the turnaround time would be 8-12 weeks.
Why would I want to be without my camera over the holidays? My choices were a)Send in the camera for repair and buy a second to have over the holiday season, or b)Deal with the camera that still took decent pictures except when it didn't (requiring a solid smack).
I went with choice A, but have since replaced the camera with a different brand.

I guess you can push it too far trying to save money on body parts.

Canon usually makes solid, high quality cameras. It's good to see them owning up to their mistake unlike other companies (microsoft, apple, sony)

I have one of these cameras, purchased in late september. Talked to Canon directly this morning after perusing their website, testing my camera, and finding that indeed, my camera is effected.
The response was pretty good; could be a lot worse. I will be issued a pre-paid mailing label to send the camera to the nearest Canon service center; but that they won't start doing these repairs until Oct. 22. Kinda cramps my use of the camera for the next 2-x weeks, but at least Canon is taking action to preserve their consumer base.

After all the publicity authorized Canon dealers continue to sell the A-650 cameras on the recall list that have not been repaired by Canon! I have ordered the A-950 from two authorized dealers after discussing the Canon recall and repair issue, and they sent recalled cameras anyway. It's not easy being a Canon customer!
