Internet2 prepped for 100Gbps capacity
Well it will still be vulnerable to a man, a match, and a mattress, but starting in January, the private Internet2 will begin offering 100Gbps bandwidth in 10Gbps chunks over its fiber optic network. The tech behind these ridiculous speeds -- known as Dynamic Circuit Network -- is reportedly complete as of today, with a wrap party being held at the consortium's Fall Member Meeting in San Diego. Of course researchers will naturally tire of those 10Gbps pipes rather quickly, which is why Internet2 is already working on ramping up the bitrate to between 20Gbps and 100Gbps per line. We'd go into more detail, but our employer-supplied 1,000 hours of free dial-up are just about tapped out...

May the torrents begin.
Nando @ Oct 10th 2007 8:39PM
Once (if) Internet2 is implemented everywhere, just watch everyone download pirated HD movies on the very same day the film editors have produced the final cut of the movie. lol
mouman @ Oct 10th 2007 5:02PM
porn will never be the sam... lol
DarkAardvark @ Oct 10th 2007 7:45PM
who's sam?

Getting a little tired of the porn jokes every time we talk about bandwidth / lag.
Brien @ Mar 11th 2008 3:55AM
The internet is for porn.
Ian @ Oct 10th 2007 5:03PM
well my first thought is what the hell would you do with that much bandwidth.. but these two posts above me answered that quite quickly
octoberasian @ Oct 10th 2007 5:13PM
Isn't that what any man needs to live?
Porn, a cold beer, and a free hand.
... and oodles upon oodles of bandwidth to make the wait no longer there.
A Tree @ Oct 10th 2007 5:15PM
set course for ludicrous speed

Moff @ Oct 10th 2007 5:44PM
I just want to say. Internet2 begins at my house. So, you can buy access from me.
There is about 3 computers already on it. :) -- Reduced speeds during testing 1gbps at this time.

I have a few extra AOL 1,000 Free Hour discs if you'd like them.

You mean coasters?
wyldbill @ Oct 10th 2007 6:09PM
Pfft! L3's backbone has been running at these speeds for years. The upgrade to 400Gbps/fiber started over 18 months ago.
Printice @ Oct 10th 2007 6:29PM
wow and my 3mbits was fast to me! woo hoo some researchers are going to have some sore hands after thet much porn!
Dom @ Oct 10th 2007 6:36PM
looooooooool thats tru...... ontop of that piracy is also about to fly through the roof.
anonymous @ Oct 10th 2007 6:48PM
not a problem, they can only last for 15 seconds.
Printice @ Oct 10th 2007 7:34PM

CleftAsunder @ Oct 10th 2007 7:17PM
There won't be any piracy so have fun having someone check out all the animal porn you download!
Tim Ficke @ Oct 10th 2007 7:30PM
Ok i have a 3mbps connection cause my phone company flat out sucks. In comparison, what does this mean in terms of speed boost? How much more quickly will everything be done?
Gene @ Oct 10th 2007 11:31PM
I don't know if you're serious... but, 3Mbps means 3 Megabits per-second... a Mega bit is a million bits... 8 bits, is a byte, 1000 bytes, is a kilobyte and 1000 kilobytes, is a Megabyte... your average song is 4 megabytes... which is 32,000,000 bits... or, 32 Megabits...
Now... a giga bit... is 1 billion bits... which is 125 Megabytes... and we're talking 100 gigabits here, at 10 gigabit chunks? thats 1.250 Gigabytes per second, transfer rate... While you, on a 3 Megabit connection are only managing 375 Kilobytes per second.
Now, I'm not sure if all this techno-jargon makes any sense to you, or even if I got my conversions dead on... but, if not, I still know I'm in the general ballpark... So, hopefully that answers your question about how much of a speed boost you'd be getting.

Cool Comparison but your numbers are off a bit. Computers Work in Base 2 not 10. So a 1 Kbyte is 2^10 Bytes = 1024 Bytes (close to 1000 but not exactly) and MB is 2^20 Bytes = 1024 Kbytes or 1048576 Bytes or 8388608 Bits.
Now MBits is not standard some people take it to mean 2^20 bits or 10^6 bits. In the computer worlds it is always 2^of something just the nature of being binary.
This is why when you buy a hard drive the number you see on the box is rarely the same as the number your computers displays.
With all that said a 3 Mbit connections is incredibly fast (Using base 2 Math because that is what I like) Your 3 Mbit connection is runing at 384 KBytes Per second. Or about a novel every 2.5 Seconds, and an average song every 10 Seconds.
In comparison in that same 2.5 Seconds on a 100 Gbit connection, you can download One encyclopedia , and a couple of DVDs.
Tim Ficke @ Oct 11th 2007 5:43PM
Ok and in english? lol
JosephMohmed @ Nov 8th 2007 1:08PM
"Ok and in english? lol"
it's really fucking fast.
Zach @ Mar 11th 2008 5:00PM
OK since no one can give him any decent english numbers i'll do the task. :)
3mbp/s as he said is roughly 400kb/s
a song downloaded off itunes with a bitrate of (for the sake of things) is 192kb/s
so for every one second of downloading, you get roughly two seconds of song, so two minutes for a four minute song at the maximum theoretical speed (assuming the guys above me are any right.. i'm very busy but i thought i'd try to help)
1250 gigabytes per second.. (FUCKING FAST AS HELL)
think of well over 200 (probably pushing 250) dvd's. in ONE second.
you can't even find torrents to download that quickly so, basically it's like (assuming you have some dvd's, games, and pictures, videos and music in your house) being able to download EVERYTHING you've ever made on your computer/games console etc. etc. in about a second. literally.
it's quite fucking fast to say the least.
Zach @ Mar 11th 2008 5:02PM
*note: i am fully aware of saying "english numbers" and my downloading a song scenario is what he'd face in real life scenarios. (ie. limewire.)
sn1per420 @ Oct 10th 2007 7:43PM
Did anyone actually read the article? It's only gonna be used for academic purposes. So yea, it's damn fast, but it's not like you can actually use it for torrents or anything. I'll stick with my 20mbit download that allows for torrents.
Matthew Hilario @ Oct 10th 2007 7:53PM
initially..its bound to reach the consumer market in no time.
Penguin Warlord @ Oct 10th 2007 9:09PM
Actually he's right this is strictly academic. It will never be released because they don't want their new wider tubes to be clogged up with your porn and poker. A replacement for the internet will com it just won't be Internet 2.
Magallanes @ Oct 11th 2007 9:42AM
Indeed, in fact internet2 is operative since many years. So those 100gb will be for academic-only use :academic pron, academic p2p...
Johnny @ Oct 10th 2007 7:45PM
Since it will take forever to roll out 100Gbps, how about we move to 100Mbps first, like the rest of the world has.
Zach @ Mar 11th 2008 5:04PM
where the hell in the world can you get those speeds (and i mean literally, 100)
i get 16/1.5, because i'm throttled to the point where my neck hurts.
NewJohnny @ Mar 11th 2008 6:58PM
Finland, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong all offer 100Mbps internet speeds. The United States is listed 16th on the world's speed charts.
Dig around on Google, you'll find the numbers. Or just go shopping in those respective countries (more are added all the time too).
DarkAardvark @ Oct 10th 2007 7:48PM
but can anyone actually upload that fast?
paul34 @ Oct 10th 2007 8:06PM
Won't ATT squash this and tell us again that "copper is good enough for you"?
It's just more convenient for me to have ATT tell me what I want. No decisions necessary!
Wendell Daniel @ Oct 10th 2007 8:15PM
1ms ping times from coast to coast?
Magallanes @ Oct 11th 2007 9:52AM
The max speed achieved is (in a ideal condition) 15ms cause the light speed is fast but not enough.
Justin @ Oct 11th 2007 10:12AM
Physically impossible. It takes way longer than that for light to cross the continent. For example, NYC to LA is (according to http://www.mapcrow.info/Distance_between_New_York_US_and_Los_Angeles_US.html) is 2443.79 miles straight line. Light in a vacuum takes 13.1187382 milliseconds to go that far.
So, 13 ping is your best-case scenario between those two locations.
Sabi @ Oct 10th 2007 8:25PM
I bet there will be a way to use it for illegal purposes even though it is intended for education. I know i have access to web space through my college. i can easily upload an illegal copy of a movie (let's say) and someone can download it if i give them the link. So if my college super-upgrades to this Internet2 then i can upload a movie and post a link online and people can d/l it.
(i'd probably get caught by my school real quick though) but its doable.
Moses Jiggetts @ Oct 10th 2007 9:48PM
OH SNAP SON!!!
Andrew @ Oct 10th 2007 9:57PM
large universities already have this. anyone ever hear of i2hub? it was a huge napster pretty much, but only could use it when you were at school, on their connection but you could trade songs, movies, porn, whatever through any other school on an i2 network.
uagent @ Oct 11th 2007 12:08AM
Yeah, it was rather glorious until The Man hopped on and started serving up DMCA notices at the same rate as the downloads :(
Bloobie @ Oct 11th 2007 12:37AM
I2Hub was run on the Abilene network, created by the Internet2 group, which has a 10Gbps backbone and 100Mbps connectivity between each node. With recent network changes they are implementing, the Abilene name will be dropped in favour of just The Internet2 Network, and the speeds mentioned in the article will be achieved. Being able to request 10Gbps on demand per line is a significant step up from 100Mbps.

I would imagine Al Gore is taking credit for discovering this.
Wwhat @ Oct 11th 2007 12:04AM
Amusing as the al gore jokes are what he said was that he was instrumental in setting up and backing the creation of internet, and he actually was!
He never actually said he invented the internet, but meh it's about jokes so never mind.
