Ricoh Caplio R7 gets reviewed
Ricoh's recently-released Caplio R7 digital camera certainly has the specs to get the job done and, judging from Photography Blog's new review, it looks like the camera as a whole stacks up pretty nicely as well. While it's apparently not a huge leap over the previous R6 model, the Photography Blog folks nonetheless found a few welcome improvements, including a four-way "joystick" that apparently works particularly well with the updated interface, and a new "vibration correction system" that should lead to some better pictures even in difficult shooting situations. Otherwise, it appears to be pretty much in line with the R6, including that same 7x wide-angle optical zoom lens, and the same speedy performance that Photography Blog says "easily beats the competition."

Yeah - some of us work there for the Ricoh Family Group! It was very strange the other week, the sound of Daniel O'Donnell singing below us in the Jaguar Exhibition Hall was kind of spooky and unsettling.

Ricoh might not be the best known name in the digital camera industry, but have in fact won the TIPA Prestige Camera of the Year award two years running (2006 / 2007) - so perhaps you shouldn't be so much of a "brand snob" and make ill-educated remarks about image quality.
I bet these awards would be treasured by ANY of the big name camera manufacturers - so don't knock something until you've tried it.

what ???
did i say to buy some other brand blind boy?
you should have your eyes checked because the images from this camera look like SHIT
sure, print them at 4x3 or resize them to 640x480, they're great!
i dont give a crap who won what award,
Al Gore got a Nobel....
hows that for credibility of an award???
awards mean shit, theyre just like diamonds. you parade with them around your neck to impress the braindead idiots that make up 2/3 of the population.

I'm afraid "Call Me" (can I call you that?) is right. The images they use in the review to showcase the camera are washed out and noisy. I wouldn't buy that camera regardless of rewards and a zoom worth of any peeping tom.

What did you expect from a compact camera that boasts wide-angle shots at telephoto range?
Don't tell me you seriously expected quality photographs.

"Girlfiend"- now that's a new name.

Got an R6, it rocks.
It isn't the best point-and-shoot, but if you know what you're doing it can take great photos. Lots of manual options, on a compact with good price, low in-camera noise reduction and very nice macro.
I spent a lotta time comparing and R6 was easily the best for price and size.
If you want a very easy very good very cheap P+shoot try the Fuji F31fd! :)

Does anyone know of a decent retailer in the US that sells these? I would like to get one, but haven't found a reputable source in the U.S. yet. Please Help.

I own an orange Caplio R7 and can talk about lens quality from first-hand experience, not from looking at pictures from a review. The wide angle has less distortion than the 28mm Leica and is very sharp. The telephoto is not quite as sharp (but some of that may just be hand-holding a 200mm equivalent at slow speeds). There is some purple fringing in high-contrast edge detail. Overall, it packs a lot of quite advanced features into a compact body and is not just a point and shoot. People who have seen it and the results are very impressed- especially since they have never usually heard of Ricoh cameras.

PS
You can see my Caplio R7 shots on Flickr (search Peter John Dean) but I have reduced the image size. If anyone wants a full-size image I can do it, with a comparison of a Leica shot which is almost identical. I defy you to tell which is which just by looking.
