Modder stuffs microphone into iPod touch dock appendage
Just under a fortnight ago, we found that the audio input pins on the iPod touch were indeed active and able to record audio. Now, a modder has constructed a smallish dock appendage that plugs directly into the touch and enables you to input audio. Apparently, the gizmo sports a built-in microphone and pre-amp, which could theoretically be used in VoIP applications or for recording simple voice notes. It seems as though the creator is offering these up to anyone interested, but you'll have to drop him an email to find out how much such an accessory will run you.

Update: RadicalxEdward let us know it's going to go for €30 (including US shipping) when it's up for sale, whenever that is.

ipod touch PHONE!!!
All with blue tooth and we have a completely functional device. Apple you listening????....iPhone minus the phone part and thats all we want.
You have the ability, now make it happen. Many people who do not want an integrated device or AT&T would like this.
Also make the iPhone have 32GB or 48/64GB (for $300-$400) to not cannibalize sales and you will be golden.
@ Kiwi616
Apple doesn't care what you want.
If that is what you want, you could always get an N800, and get a free pair of built-in speakers, a brace of SDHC slots, and a full _open_ linux system instead of a full (closed) MacOS X...
Oh wait, the N800 doesn't have a slightly-used fruit logo.
Forget I said anything.
I swear these hackers are boosting the sales of the iPod touch.
The amount of software they put out just to release what Apple has locked on its own product is incredible.
Well done for this mod..
I for one will definitely be looking into it... ;)
Hello Skype Application...
Hi
You win 1 internets
Apple FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Apple didn't make this. Modders FTW!!!!!
I'm trying to do the same thing with DS homebrew. It's got a mic, it's got speakers, it's got WIFI.
Based on data speed, it will probably perform more like a walkie-talkie than VOIP.
its been done. voip program for the DS, called SvSIP. works well, i use it. google it.
@ Jason
Only time will tell what new features will be added...go get a Zune already! Ohh wait are you that 'Zune Tattoo Guy'? Now I get it.
Can I trademark SkAlpel? Seems close enough.
until 2 weeks from now when apple releases a software update that bricks it.
It seems like it would be rather easy to create a small dock connector that had a 2.5mm headset jack. Anything spoken would go thru the doc connector to the mic input and anything heard would come thru the dock connector to the headset.
Similarly, it would also be possible to create a small dock connector that would instead have a bluetooth chip integrated into it so you could connect the iPod touch to a bluetooth headset. However, this might not be as easy to do homebrew.
Of course its all for naught if you cant get some kind of Skype-like software on the iPod touch in the first place.
Hmm, so maybe we can imagine a not so distant future when the iPod touch becomes a skype phone?!?!?! Now wouldn't THAT be useful!
Niffty. People started doing the same exact thing to Palms (PDA) like over a year ago.
Where was this a month ago when I could have used it? Nice little hack though, very professionally done.
If you want a built-in Microphone, ditch the iPod and get a Creative Zen, which is a better player that comes with a built-in Microphone and FM Tuner. A few models have line-in recording as well.
