Xbox Live suffering from major outage. On Christmas weekend. Ouch.

Hard to say whether it's caused or correlated, but just about everyone with an Xbox is probably tying to get online today in order to avoid spending that precious, invaluable quality time with their amazing, loving fam -- problem is Xbox Live has been down for friggin hours, and doesn't seem any closer to getting back online. I turned on the260 and it took longer than normal to sign in. A few minutes later I was kicked out of Live.

i've been playing fine all day and night, but it has kicked me off several times, and some of my friends can't sign in, my friend said it was a TCMP (close enough) error when he tried the troubleshooting program

I want my money back, if they expect me to pay for their "Premium service" and It isn't perfect. I don't want to pay for there fucking screw up. Especially when the other 2 systems are free.

Same thing with me, it took forever to sign in then it kicked me out. I didn't mind, it finally gave me some motivation to finish the campaign on COD4 (which is frickin awesome btw).

You can play online for free, but certain features are only available if you have the higher subscription level (such as voice chat). You only have to pay for the higher level access.
It's a decent system though, you pay a single fee for just about all the xbox games that support online play. I know that Final Fantasy XI (which is available on PS2 with hard drive, Xbox 360, and PC) requires another subscription from square-enix. And there are some other PC games that require fees (World of Warcraft) so the "pay-to-play" scheme is not unusual.
For the record I'm happy that engadget covered this story. I literally just got back from tearing my hair out over why I couldn't connect to XBL (it kept failing either the MTU connectivity test or Xbox Live connection).
Glad to know it wasn't me going insane, but rather a screwup on their part... I mean that seriously

Haven't tried today, but just did now, and yeah, can't login. Logging in on xbox.com is fine though.

glad i got that ps3, i have nothing aginst the 360, all of my friends have one and i get jealous sometimes when i can't play with them, but hey, i got URT3 and i will be able to upload custom maps soon, i don't see anything like that being implimented to the 360. Sorry guys, but you pay for your service and don't even get the "premium" out of it.

Just out of curiosity, how would you tell if it was any closer to getting back online? If it's down, it's down. If it's up, it's up.
Maybe they have one of those out to lunch door clock things that says, " We will be back in 1 hour."

I say that based on the fact that I've been checking their status all day, and only in the last hour did they finally acknowledge the problem in the link above. Not a good sign for an expeditious fix.

@jbcaro, agreed. The Engadget fanboy (yup, haters are fanboys) is using poor logic. Even funnier to use the word "fact" in a statement saying he's been trying all day ... heck, I think that word alone makes it scientific evidence. Its now settled, we can all now agree theres a "scientific concensus" that Microsoft is causing the Earth to warm. I bet Gates is building a Deathstar! Now where did I park my Millenium iFalcon?

All I did was restart my 360 two times and presto, Live worked. It makes no sense but hey, from the XBL status it looks they don't even know what the problem is.

I just tried and the first time it did not connect so I told it to sign in again and it connected after about 30 seconds.
I can connect after a couple of tries but can't do much past that. My friends list went from 13 on to one playing Oblivion.
it was acting up a bit in vancouver when i was playing halo 3. i had thought it was the network being laggy.
but it did take me couple tries to get signed onto live.

yea i noticed that last night, like around 10 or so. My 360 wouldn't login my gamertag but it said that live was working. So then I had to click recover gamertag, from there it tried to recover the gamertag, but there was no luck. After 5 tries it finally worked and i was signed into live.
So THIS is what that extra $50 a year buys you! [Goes back to playing Unreal Tournament 3]
That was what I was thinking... you'd think for $50/yr and no server-side hosting it would be bulletproof- that is a tremendous amount of money they collect!
Actually my $50 a year, which is oddly enough cheaper than buying a meal at McDonald's once a month pays for my ability to mute and block players I disagree with as well as offer an integrated inline service that none have yet to accomplish even remotely. That is what my $50 a year pays for.

Its hit or miss here in Santa Cruz, CA. If I shut down the 360 and start it up again it logs right in.

I have been on for awhile now. Logged off and back on when a friend asked if I was having problems. Weird how its working fine for me, and a few others I see on, but not some people.
It was down a bit yesterday as well. Got on for a bit today on one account, enough to download the media update for MP4 ASP playback. Now it stopped working again, although apparently game updates still work (can do you do those even with a banned account?).
I was playing with no problems for most of the day, and got kicked off at about 6. I was trying randomly all evening, and then just before 10 I finally got on after several repeated tries. Not sure how long it will last though.
The really hilarious thing is - I was watching some divx, and it booted me. I turned off the machine and then back on an hour later - and now i need to be connected to live for an update... wtf. Obviously the necessary parts are there to play it - so what, you can't play divx even if you were online and now aren't?

So, you have to be online to watch DivX... This has to violate some kind of privacy rights..

Well I guess you get what you pay for. I bet Sony and Nintendo have had even more problems than Microsoft has. Xbox Live is the best service available to gamers I don't know why people bother with PC gaming not when you can have what you get from Xbox Live for only 50.00 a year. It would cost me a fortune to play FPS's on my computer and the services would always be down. Man I wish they're hurry up and get live going so I could spend my Microsoft points on some of their awsome exclusive content!
Called MS at 20:00 FL eastern time, told me to call back in an hour, called back an hour later to be told to call back in an hour but I decided to talk to an Indian this time so that I could get my moneys worth from MS.
I think everyone should require a licence to the Caps Lock key. Consider your licence suspended.

i doubt it has been hacked, it is probably a hub of microsoft's X Serve servers in some area where wheather sucks. now they can say:

I Havent been able to connect for like 2 hours in Wisconsin.
I wasn't having a problem signing in, I was having a problem STAYING signed in. Every time I started a game (disc-based or arcade), I'd get signed right the heck out. :(
That's why I was able to play TF2! Once you're in a game, you're playing in a game hosted on an individual's 360 and not on Xbox Live. Interesting.
