Tip of the Day: Lamenting dead MMOs?
Ever wonder about the MMOs that didn't make it? What about the games that have closed up shop? We've got a few links that should help you broaden your appreciation of what we've got.
For every massively multiplayer game on the marketplace right now, there's a handful that never made it. And of those, several have since closed up shop when they couldn't hack it. The greybeards call it 'going sunset', the discontinuation of support for the service. We talked about a few of these games in a discussion of dead titles back in April, but it's always worth remembering what has gone before.
Mythica - A long-dead offering from Microsoft Game Studios, this Norse fantasy was to have been one of the first titles making heavy use of instancing. Despite its brief lifespan there were still many previews and interviews done on the game.
Auto Assault - A road warrior-friendly title that just never quite found an audience, NCsoft closed up shop on this game last year.
Asheron's Call 2 - This sequel to the original Turbine game was shut down after the developer purchased the title from Microsoft. That period of upheaval never quite ended, despite an expansion, and the game is still sorely missed as a fan favorite to this day.
Gods and Heroes - The *other* Perpetual game that almost-was, this Roman-era fantasy title would have brought a new vision of NPC assistance and animation development to the genre. It was put on 'indefinite hold' when Perpetual met a messy end.
