Sure, it felt good being the only cat on the block rockin' 8GB of microSDHC storage in your cellphone, but time doesn't stand still, player -- SanDisk's just upped the status quo to 12GB. Yep, there it is, impossibly small and ready to be filled with data -- too bad we don't have any pricing info yet.
Who needs that much capacity? Me! If I had a treo, I'd feel the same way. But since my N95-3 is WAY more awesomer, it would actually be useful. Having video out means I can port multiple dvd quality rips on my phone and watch them on any tv (preferably HD). Who needs a dvd player?
I'd buy if the price is right. If it's close to the current price for 8gb at just over $100, then I'd buy a couple. 12 gb can hold a lot (more than necessary mp3s, every nintendo ds rom available, three shrunk movies, 15 movies in divx, plenty of porn, the possibilities are limitless).
1. Video/Audio Recording 2. All these hi-res images/video clips 3. Games and all these heavy applications (I am using WM6 device) 4. offline Wikipedia (just in case)
lol, no offense, but I love it when people complain about too much space these days. Heck I have a 128MB microSD card on my KRZR and it's far from full. Still, I say, the more the merrier!
Yes, it takes me back to those times when people would also say that 640K is all the Memory we will every need and that 10gb hard drives would never catch on because "people could never find enough information to fill up such a device"
So i'm guessing because one man only uses 300 mb on his treo that means that the overwhelming majority of the world either A) can't use more B) wouldn't have a need to use more.
1) Navigation programs 2GB 2) Music (personally, on my phone about 1.5 GB, though i wish i had more (only have a 2 GB card) 3) Videos (I used to keep a few episodes of the daily show or other random tv shows on my phone, and 4) would watch them on my phone rather than driving home sitting in traffic...most episodes are either 180 or 350 MB...so it adds up) 5) Programs (rather install programs and run off SD card then off the phone itself 6) Internet Cache (can save to SD rather than phone) 7) Misc data/documents/pictures/videos saved on the GO As you can see, it all adds up, so a 8 GB or 12 GB would def be the sweet spot for me in the future, once prices finally come down.
The question isn't, "who needs this much memory in a cellphone", the problem is that YOU own a Treo. If you has a "REAL" cellphone -- like a NOKIA N-SERIES. You would never ask such a stupid question. You would just be grateful for more space, because of all the music, software, pictures and video. Duh.
Next time, buy a phone that actually "DOES SOMETHING", then let's see you complain about space. Try the brand new Nokia N96 coming out this summer 2008 -- throw that dated palm pilot away.
so does that mean they put 2 chips on the card? like they usually have to go strictly in powers of 2... I don't get why they would do this and not just jump to 16, where they could use a single chip.
I thought it just doubled...1 to 2, to 4, to 8, to 16, to 32, to 64, to 128, to 256, to 512...etc.
I think they are going in smaller steps with MicroSDHC since MicroSDHC only allows for cappacities up to 32GB, so once 32GB is reached, a new spec will have to be created.
@Mark: doubling is going by powers of 2. I know the reason why they do it is that it's similar in design to RAM which also goes in powers of 2 because a single RAM/flash chip must come in powers of 2 which means they're using 2 for this.
My N82's 8GB card is the size of that same thumbnail! It really is quite extraordinary how they do it.
I was expecting a jump from 8 to 16GB's though, and can't help but feel that the premium asked for this card won't sell as well as the savings made through the 'lesser' 8GB one. The extra 4GB won't be worth what they'll be wanting for it I fear.
I'd love to use this to carry around an entire OS running in a portable virtual machine (see http://z0rz.com/blog/archives/87). I could finally run all the apps I want on a locked-down computer! Too bad it looks to be only a class 4 at the moment. When this hits the $100-$150 range in class 6 I may consider it.
This is useful for a Nokia N810 that has a micro SD slot and a 4.1" screen for videos and music. For the "average" phone this doesn't buy you much. But given you have micro SD to mini SD and standard SD you could use this for anything that takes a SD card.
A. 64GB of Flash memory is still relatively expensive and the prices are not low enough for the vast majority of consumers to be able to afford it...yet. 2009 will likely see a drop in prices down to something more reasonable.
B. If Apple released a 64GB ipod now it wouldn't give their hoards of loyal fans a reason to pay a premium for this year's 32GB model.
Well Apple seems to want to get rid of hard drives completely so they've should packed the iPod Classic to the brim with flash memory (& kept the symbolic white iPod but that's another matter) even if it was a bit more expensive than say $399.
Don't forget- these are good for more than cellphones. Use an SD card adapter and you've got the world's smallest briefcase. Or an encrypted backup of your home directory that you can tape to the back of your card case. Or spare memory for a portable camera/media player/etc. with an SD adapter. The list goes on...
"I commonly need to boot a system from an external disc and take a snapshot of the host system. I also then need to burn a copy of the image to a DVD. While I can do it with two separate external devices, and two power supplies, and two I/O cables, it'd be nice to find a small dual-drive enclosure. It would need to have USB, eSATA, and FireWire. Either slim-line or half-height bay for the optical burner would be fine, and space for either a 2.5- or 3.5-inch hard disc. Any ideas?"

Do anyone know if this work on Samsung d900 or the new iriver e100 mp3 player???

P.s. Thx. :D
Only 12?
I'm Dissapointed
-_-
Who needs this much data on thier cell? I have a 2gb in my Treo and it's got 300mb or so used...
Sure, MicroSD(HC) is a viable format for other devices in the future, but right now, not so much.

My Sansa View would welcome such an addition.
All I can say is - N95+12GB = Shove your iPod touch up your bum

I've only got 512mb in my phone. I need to catch up. :(
Mine measures its space in kbs :(
Someday I'll buy a new phone...
Wow, I could hold nearly every Nintendo DS games on one SD card! M3-DS FTW!!!
not quite.
US releases alone are over 18GB
The complete worldside set is nearly 80GB
12GB would hold a nice collection, if you were into that stuff ;)
me WANT !
...12 gigs? don't they have to go in powers of 2?
2^3 + 2^2???
so does that mean they put 2 chips on the card? like they usually have to go strictly in powers of 2... I don't get why they would do this and not just jump to 16, where they could use a single chip.
I thought it was like
2^x or 2^y, not y^2.
So it would be 2^3 is 8GB and 2^4 is 16.
Yes, it's 2^4 for 16, not (2^3)^2 = 8^2 for 64.
@ Y
8^2 is a power of eight, not 2.
I thought it just doubled...1 to 2, to 4, to 8, to 16, to 32, to 64, to 128, to 256, to 512...etc.

I know technology is advancing and all, but i am still just utterly completely amazed at how 12gb.. so much data.. fits on something so tiny. Wow.
My 1GB microSD card still boggles my mind! It is the size of my thumbnail!
Seriously, I think you could swallow like ten of these at a time with a swig of mountain dew and hardly even feel it.
I'm seriously considering starting a data smuggling business.
My N82's 8GB card is the size of that same thumbnail! It really is quite extraordinary how they do it.

cool, now how long before cellies support 12 gigs? :-)
Hopefully this means price drops for the 4GB and 8GB cards.
Four years ago I've paid about 100 $ for a "256 MB MMC card"
Quite impressive.
Flash memory is the fastest growing technology these years.
& so why can't Apple do an iPod Touch with more than 16GB ? I would've been all over the "iTouch" if it had storage around 64GB. :-/
A. 64GB of Flash memory is still relatively expensive and the prices are not low enough for the vast majority of consumers to be able to afford it...yet. 2009 will likely see a drop in prices down to something more reasonable.

Panasonic just announced 32GB cards. My N800 and its 2 SD card slots could have 64GB of storage.
wooow very good .. price ?! :(
and 16 GB is just around the corner...nice!
A lot of new cell phones already support MicroSDHC, so they will support any SDHC card up to 32GB.
LOL- awesome thread.

No Veronica Belmont video? I was hoping for one for every gadget that's being put up here.
