Oh noes. An independent investigation launched last week into an alleged multi-million-dollar slush fund has
raided the homes of Samsung chairman, Lee Kun-Hee, and six other Samsung execs. The chairman and the executives are already banned from leaving the country. The investigation saw some 50 investigators seize documents and a laptop from Lee's Seoul villa after a search lasting several hours. Samsung, for its part, has denied the long whispered
bribery claims, made formal by
its former chief lawyer last year.

The group's assets are valued at 280.8 billion dollars and its exports were worth 66.3 billion dollars last year, more than 20 percent of the nation's total.
Wow, one company accounts for more than 20% of a country's exports.

from what my friend says, Samsung make just about everything you can think of in Korea, not just electronic components

With that much money, I'm sure they will pay their way out...unless it was the untouchables that raided them.

If it's good for Samsung, it's good for Korea. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that bribery is probably very common with major companies in Korea. This could be a good thing that they are actually able to bring these charges while the company is so strong. On the other hand I wonder how fair the proceedings will go since the newly elected president has deep ties with Hyundai.

I'm still waiting for that SSD equipped supertanker and That refinery with Bluetooth headset. Seriously, those guys make virtually anything you can imagine!

Maybe they'll come out and announce it as the 'biggest bribe ever.'

Even if they are found guilty, I think Korea's biggest bribe award will still goes to a former president who has arranged for the Korean air force to purchase F-15's. After getting approval (because the F-15 is a kick-ass fighter) he changed the order to the crappy F-16s. He and the people who brokered the deal ended up pocketing the difference. After his term was over he was jailed for that and many other things. I forget his name and other details about it. If anyone knows please share.
