Apple store down, again
Sigh. You know the drill. A couple hours of downtime and then we'll see nothing (maintenance), or new products that range from the mundane (Aperture 2) to the golly (32GB iPod touch). We already saw the iPod shuffle drop by $30 this morning before Apple pulled the plug on the store. Perhaps the $100 drops on the iPhone and touch are just minutes away? It is Tuesday after all.

Perhaps you stop posting every time the apple store farts?
i think the comments on these posts are ever increasingly hilarious.
Hey engadget, is there a template for this post yet or do you have a 1-click setup on apple automator?
Maybe we need a class action lawsuit against Apple for providing a less than stellar online service?
You we really need a status report everytime somebody at Apple farts?
Repost.
I'm sure some people found Apeture 2 super-exciting.
I was wondering why Aperture 2 had been described as "mundane" - it's a lot more interesting than an iPod Touch with 32GB, that's for sure, if you are a photographer (and who isn't these days?).
I have been waiting for Aperture 2 with a lot more anticipation then I have yet another increase in storage size on an iPod/iTouch/iPhone (talk about mundane).
Seriously, why is it exciting that chip manufacturer X managed to increase storage capacity so Apple swapped out memory chip Z with memory chip Q.
Yeah, lackey #12 replaced the spindle with 1GB chips with a spindle holding 2GB chips. How exciting!!! (You can tell it is a big deal because it has three whole exclamation points at the end.)
Could you stick to posting actual news? Thanks.
Aye. I'm fine with this Engadget Apple love, but please post it when they have actually done that price drop or something...thought we seem to be posting here anyways so i'm sure engadget is happy either way;)
Other tech blogs have tons of news, but i dont see half of them having this much of Apple stuff.
Could it be Blu-Ray drive for MacPro? just to drift away from the other rumors
Perhaps some of us appreciate it that they're keeping an eye out for changes, so we don't have to add yet one more thing to do ourselves? PerHAPS, if you're not interested, you could skip to the NEXT article and not bother the rest of us with your whining? PERHAPS you're wasting your time and ours and engadgets? I mean, come on, really.
PerHAPS they could just tell us when it comes back up again if there's anything interesting?
Perhaps 3 posts out of 15 on the front page announcing the same minor Apple update is excessive, and perhaps there are fanboy sites for people who think different? [sic]
I'm beginning to get sick of Engadget's low news threshold. Gone are the days when you could glance at the front page and catch the day's news. Now you have to scroll several pages through and manually filter out the important bits. Reminds me of spam in my email really.
Could we have a 'news' version of engadget, like we have the Apple-only and the Apple-free versions?

(Finds wall)
(Bangs head)
No Luigi! We(I) have nothing against Apple, it's the irrelevant padders that fill engadget's front page. I DO want to know when apple has released a new superlight laptop, or a new iPod, but I couldn't give two hoots if their site is down because they might, or might not, be doing something. Or if Solid Alliance has a new USB device on the market, for that matter...
"Sigh. You know the drill."
Here is an idea, why don't you stop having such drills?
Wishfull thinking I know but hope it is the new MacBook Pro, as ive been on the edge to buy my first mac for months.
If they don't update the Macbook Pros soon I think there will be a mob heading down to Cupiterno with pitch forks and torches. After so many weeks of waiting its kindof become a weekly joke on Tuesdays now, lets see what else Apple can announce other than new Macbook Pros. I guess we will just have to wait and see.
No even mentioning a long missing replacement for PB 12"...
Mmm..pitchfork rioty goodness..
Count me in. I'm just waiting on the latest MBP revision before I take the plunge and buy one. I suppose the longer I wait, the more money I will have set aside for it, but I planned on getting one anyway.
I've been practicing my mad pitchforking skills for weeks. Let's go!
i am hoping for macbookpro update...
You know what, you don't have to click in if you don't care. Call me a fanboy, I do want to know if Apple is coming up with something.
So does everybody else. All these Windows losers should look at what posts get the most hits on Engadget. People are more intersted in Apple than say..(holding back laugh) Dell, and that is why there is so much more news coverage.
The store being down for maintenance isn't "coming up with something". In other words, don't post that the store's down -- that's just breathless fanboy "BREAKING! SOMETHING MIGHT BE HAPPENING!" space filler. Post when it comes *back*, and there's, you know, actually something to post about.
32GB touch is up
what's super weak here is Apple needing to take its store down to change the display. I wonder if it ever calculated how much it might lose in sales each time it tries this. I bet it is some pimped-up webmaster's pet theory of how to do marketing. When a site is pulling millions in sales, can it afford to go offline to release Aperture 2? Or perhaps it is not pulling so many sales?...
There's that, definitely. However, given the number of websites that report when the Apple Store goes down and the excitement this "event" seems to bring, I don't think you can buy marketing like that. I don't think it is necessary for Apple to bring the store down to make an update like this but I think they do it because it generates additional interest and a sense (sometimes incorrectly) of anticipation. It's definitely weird, though.
Yeah, I can see all the sales lost, forever. I can clearly see potential customers about to buy a Mac (or whatever), finding the site down, and immediately saying to themselves:
1. The store is down. I'll never, ever try to buy anything from their store again.
2. I planned to switch to the Mac, but as the store is down, I'll immediately buy a Sony instead.
3. I'm already a Mac/Apple fan, but being the store down, I feel the urge to switch to PCs, effective now.
true, maybe I'm the fool. The cult of "Apple store down" has certainly built a following.
@guiliop, not everybody visiting the site is a fanboy or switcher. Apple sells MP3 players more than anything else, plus lots of (over-priced) accessories - for which there are many good alternatives (at sites that are open 24/7), especially for people who want service at their own convenience, not Apple's timetable.
@ScooterDe
"not everybody visiting the site is a fanboy or switcher"
Then you're taken care of in point 1: can't you wait just a few hours (very few; more often then not just one) to make your purchase, or phone the numbers you see on the page?
It is undeniable that Apple has some great technology, as it is undeniable that it is an (often overpriced) fashion statement. People (not everyone, but most) heading over to Apple store want to buy Apple's stuff and nothing else, for the reasons above. Want cheap stuff? Don't care about the good looks? Not interested in the latest cool technology? You go elsewhere. But I don't see people running away just because they can't wait a little time to have what they want.
The iPod Shuffle price drop better not be the only thing we get this Apple Tuesday.
Why has engadget not really caught on to the fact that Apple is going to release/announce *something* every Tuesday this year?
"It is Tuesday after all"
Ok, maybe they have.
Why would apple intro a 32GB itouch when its already there:
http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/
Silly bastards.
Ah. If I had got a penny for each time Apple Store went down...
...what? What would happen? Seriously, I want to know!
You'd get 52 pence a year?
The store in Ireland is still up and working.
wow, deja vu?
How to post comments on Apple store down Posts:
"The store in 'your country' isnt down."
wow, there's a change of pace.
a year ago it would have been
'apple store down, hoverboards coming?'
I'm interested as I have a Macbook Pro that's been ordered for the last two weeks and hasn't shipped yet. I'm wondering if it's going to ship with 'added extras'!
16gb iPod Nano?
"time Capsule Shipping"?? Or maybe even bigger iphones with 32gb
Happy Tuesday, everybody.
lmao!!
I've given up on an updated MBP. My job is buying me a new laptop and I was hoping for a Penryn. I guess it's a Sony for me afterall. Too bad. :/
Yeah it's getting ridiculous now isn't it.
I'll bet they just forgot to trigger the store down page BEFORE they changed the price of the shuffle. Better late than never.
