G10IL, the Eee PC killer from ECS, is actually killer
Perhaps the ECS G10IL could use some help in the naming department, but it certainly isn't having any trouble bringing a bit of class to the subnotebook market. In addition to those stylish good looks, the G10IL sports a webcam, HSDPA 7.2, three USB ports, Ethernet and a 56Kb modem (joy of joys!). No mention is made of WiFi or Bluetooth, but at least the former seems a given. Other details are slim, but the price is supposedly "sub-$500." Perhaps this "race to the bottom" won't be so horrible after all.

Ok now you have my attention in the small notebook department assuming this is 10".

1) the hinge looks like dell top end laptop
2) me want.
First thing I thought when I saw the picture is that it resembles the Dell XPS m1330 and m1530 laptops.
If the price turns out to truly be below $500, I'll definitely be lining up to get one.
1. You mean the XPS m1330, which, coincidentally, is manufactured by Asus.
word on the street is that will sport a brand new Pentium4 processor and 256 MB SD-RAM along that 56k modem
"me want" sums it up XD
I am excited about this type of laptop now. Guess I'll let it play out for a bit longer before I get one though.
Nine months ago the eee, the m1330, and an HP DV notebook had a VERY WILD night out.
Except with a nicer keyboard. I hate the XPS keyboard.
But then again I also hate mac keyboards.
And membrane keyboards.
And really anything that doesn't wake the whole house when you type a sentence.
But it's white and shiny.
And that's what counts.
Looks good. A modem is however totally unecessary. No word on screen size or resolution though. The next few months are going to get very interesting when the new Eee and HP come out.
A modem unnecessary? How else do you plan on logging on to the Engadget BBS? Personally, I'm a purist and would prefer to see a 14.4 in this thing.
Why is a modem unnecessary? They have to be cheap, so the overall price can't be affected. I rather have one than not for that simple fact.
Usage for most will be rare and most will probably never use it. But if someone travels a lot, it may be the only way to get on the internet.
There's a difference between being a purist and that of owning an antique shop.
I'd rather have the latest technologies and choose to backtrack if needed. The modem is not standard kit in modern computers so it should not be included for that reason.
MBA!YEAH!
A 56k modem? Sweeet! Throw in a floppy drive and I'm all over that!!
No, seriously. I need to load AOL 3.0 onto the computer somehow.
I wonder if those old punters will still work...
I've got an old wolfenstein floppy floating around somewhere. i can't wait!
In one of the screenshots of the keyboard you can clearly see below the mousepad a "wifi" led icon inbetween its power and battery icons. Yeah, its got wifi.
There's also a blue-tooth icon down there
$500???
Are we straying from the cheap sub-laptops? If im going to spend that much I may as well go and get a vostro laptop from dell, honestly. I would still prefer the eee just for price.
You can get a Dell laptop for $500, but it'll be heavy and slow (assuming you keep Vista on it). For the same price, the ECS is a whole lot lighter and more responsive feeling, which should offer a superior user experience.
why even post about a computer and not include the CPU and RAM specs
the real stuff
Because the site the article was stole from didnt have them either.
How is this stolen?
It's just an information article that's been cited.
It's not an editorial or an opinion.
because they dont know the specs or they arent provided. I wish they would give us an estimated screen size if they saw it in person. Seems like its an 11.1" screen which in my opinion is a different class. I still would prefer this if its sub 500. The laptop doesnt just look better than the toy looking asus and cloudbook, it looks actractive compared to all laptops. but yeah, dimensions or at least vague comparisons (ex.bigger tha eepc) would be important.
I don't consider these devices to be a race to the bottom. There are plenty of people out there who would be perfectly happy with a webcam equipped, internet surfer that can get them bidding on EBAY, stalking on Myspace or VIDEO BLOGGING on Youtube.
All we need is more time for SSD's to become cheaper and gain hgher capacity.
And I'm glad this thing has 56K because some Engadget people laughed at me when I said that all laptops should have 56K. The world isn't standardized with broadband yet and in many situations there is no wifi available - while telephone lines are. I don't wanna see 56K dissapear until wifi access becomes the world standard.
'race to the bottom' goodness...that is one of the most horribly uninformed economic ideas uttered. Mr. Sony-dude should be absolutely ashamed of himself for inferring that cheaper computers is going to mean lower quality overall.
agreed . personally i have not had a reason to upgrade my pc in 4 years, no matter how many gigahertz they added. but if you give me everything i need in a smaller package .. yeah , i'll buy it.
Looks nice
It is 11 inches!
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Oh-My-God-Meet-the-Eee-And-MacBook-Killer-the-ECS-G10IL-78670.shtml
I really, really, really hope that you're still talking about that laptop. And not just for my ego.
i cant beleive he actually said it looks like an apple. It is clearly closest to the Dell m1330 in design if anything.
Race to bottom is referring to manufacturers. Imagine the margin on these machines, a couple quarters? In yen?
Color me ignorant, but what's the advantage of having this HSDPA 7.2? Does that mean I can use the laptop as a phone? Err.....?
cell network; sort of like a permanent tether for your laptop.
Looks very nice. But the keyboard seems to be like those keys on a flashy phone - looks great, but functions terribly. Lets hope it isn't.
PS Dammit, I was set on 9" eee :( Now there be many options, too many...
mmm, pretty. where do i enter my credit card info?
Oh just e-mail them to me, I'll take care of everything.
Really? Nice, what is it?

It looks a little on the large side, compared to an Eee.
holy crap! this thing might actually kill EEE PC for good.
holy moly !!
I don't think so!
This is f-ing HUGE compared to an Eee.
They're missing the whole point. The Eee is the size of a DVD player. This is the size of ... a typical laptop.
May as well get a Wal-Mart $400 lappy by Acer or Miscellaneous if you're going to get something as bulky as this.
apple take note...
Which OS?
Most likely Linux.
I hope so ("most likely linux"), but I couldn't see anything that would indicate it (other than the lack of a windows sticker on the thing; but that might be a pending thing).
If it ends up with HSPA, Wifi, and bluetooth DUN, and vendor supported ubuntu ... I might have to give it a very serious look. Especially in comparison to the linux version of HP's 2133 UMPC.
I have on occasion needed a 56k modem to fax something.
The problem now though, is that I don't ever have a phone line available. All of the phones at work are those custom deals (fax machine there anyway), and I only have cell phones at home.
Still, it's nice to have a modem.
What I don't get is computers that don't have a serial port. Managed switches still use serial ports for command line interface as do many application specific devices like your car's ECU.
I've got an older interactive whiteboard in my classroom that runs off the serial port. I had to hunt around to find a laptop that would drive it...
Sorry but where and when is this being released?.
Looks like a proof of concept to me.
11" screen, 7.2hdspa, bluetooth, wifi
All that for under £250. this just doesn't fit.
If i am wrong then i apologise but c'mon?
that price might be tagged on just to generate intrest. thats a l9t of bang for your buck right there. 0n the other hand , maybe its just shocking because we are used to laptops that have relatively new components. who knows how much they can cut from the price by offering a cpu thats been round the block a bit.
If it has WiFi and Bluetooth, I'll have a right problem picking between this and the Eee.
I know it's asking a lot, but I'd have prefer the Trackpoint interface on this computer. Of course for an OS, I'd end up install Gentoo anyways, so whatever it comes with doesn't matter, but hopefully there is an option to choose none and save the licensing fees (if any).
If you clik through ion the link, it shows on the mousepad a sign that seems like "wifi" which confirms it will have wifi.
the sign next to it which i couldnt see very well looked like bluetooth.
I think this laptop is doable under $500 as the older chipsets cost very less to install. this with the hp6133 are tempting me to get rid fo my macbookw which boils over all the time to get one of these babies
The icons are (from left to right)
1) Power
2) WiFi
3) Battery
4) Hard Drive activity
Is this really in the same class of device as the EEEpc? It seems like it will be much larger, and quite a bit more expensive.
I'm not saying it will be bad, just much closer to a regular laptop than the EEEpc.
I think it's trying to sit in that gap:
eee PC
this thing
Dell/Toshiba/HP
Lenovo/Apple/Dell's higher end/Sony
Alienware and other crazy setups
its like the eee....plus sexy....sign me up.
is that from apple? :)
Nope it's under $500 so it's definitely not made by Apple.
call me jaded, but anything coming from ECS, I'm wary of. Burned way too many times on crappy mobos to blindly jump onto anything else from them
*I like the fact it has no tacky silver buttons a la eeepc.
*I like the fact it is white so won't heat up if hit by the sun used outdoors under a tree or whatever.
*The keys look a tad flat (I prefer far more concavity here).
*Are those (hidden?) buttons under the trackpad? Are they doubling as status icons too?
EEE comes in white too.
Still the problem many will have is no optical drive. There are many business who don't want employees using flash drives because of security and still want large files burnt to cd. Then what?
considering this will cost as much as a low-end laptop (or at least really close), I would say these businesses would have no problem buying one of them.
...it's a shame that luggability will suffer in this scenario, tho.
How is burning large files to an unencrypted CD any safer than storing them on an unencrypted flash drive? It would be much easier to encrypt the flash drives for a password on access than show people how to encrypt stuff before burning it to CD.
I wasn't referring to encryption, i was referring to viruses mainly. I know it doesn't make sense, but i have run into a lot of client who have been instructed by IT not to use flash drives to transfer data so they prefer to burn files to CD. Either way optical drives still have value for the moment. I mean computers kept 5' floppy disc drives for years after they became obsolete, and discs still have a lot of usage, between installations and driver cd's, and DVD's etc.
As a somewhat-disappointed owner of an Eee PC, I will sell my Asus in a sec if it gives me better res and a slightly bigger keyboard. An aesthetic bump-up seals the deal as well.
Eee 900.
The 900 is a good upgrade, but the keyboard is the same size. While I consider upgrading to this as well, if there's another option that includes a larger keyboard (the g10il looks to be *slightly* larger) and has a more aesthetically pleasing, they'll get my dollars.
The two USB ports and especially the network jack are on the front right, EXACTLY where my notebook mouse would be if I were stationary plugged into usb devices and a LAN. Unless there's a LAN cord with a 90 degree connector that I would carry around, this is an unworkable design for anyone that is right handed and uses a mouse while using ethernet.
the lan jack is indeed in a sub-optimal position (one of the worst positions they could have put it).
I'm always amazed that basic usability doesn't come first in designer's minds.
I would L-O-V-E to see this thing with bluetooth but I believe the symbols below the trackpad are power, wifi, battery, hard drive. It just doesn't look like the bluetooth symbol to me.
Looks nice. I am frankly incredibly tired of this EEE PC, it's just not that good (screen, keyboard, always running out of space on the C drive).
Considering the other 11" notebooks (Asus U1/U2, Vaio TZ) start at around $2000, I am curious to see what components this will use.
Probably 1gb of ram, Celeron M ULV processor, 60gb hard drive?
I don't think this will ever come out here in America?
Also, it reminds me of the upcoming 11" Lenovo Ideapad U110, looks a bit like it, especially the keyboard no?
Do not want white!
Great platform for Haiku OS or BeOS.
The sticker reads:
"Winner - Best Pre-Commercial Mobile Broadband Notebook"
lol
What the?! the xps m1330 and the Eee PC did have something afterall huh?
Me wants.
Another mini / sub computer keyboard with a horrible right-shift key placement :(
Hey, it's a big deal to me. I touch type, and use the right-shift key 99% of the time. I had major problems using this kind of configuration on the Fujitsu P1200 series. Fujitsu fixed the layout on the 16xx series, so I'm thinking I'm not the only one who had problems with it.
HSDPA 7.2 =? 850Mhz, 1900Mhz, 2100Mhz
What network can we get this on? rather, what network will this be able to work on in the future?
The "race to the bottom" is pretty sweet!
Too big.
It looks like it has a full size keyboard! Please get it to Australia asap.
this is stupid, already have alll the above except for modem, how is the e3 killer? why do you think i want a modem
56k?? get a grip
e3 still rulez
Hope this race-to-the-bottom gets rolling. The most appealing thing about the EEE was the initial price-tag. To me, the price of mobility isn't that high yet.
If they go to 9" and sport at least a 20GB drive (HDD preferably), I'm in. It has to be Linux or XP though. (Cross fingers for Ubuntu). If not, I'll just buy an Asus Eee PC! I mean, whats the point. Like that other guy said, I'd rather go to walmart and get an Acer with Vista for the same $$$. I want functionality and a small size! SD Card reader is a must! If they really want to take out Eee PC, they are going to need everythng they got.
It has to have Wi-Fi! I could care less about bluetooth. I could add a dongle for $10 (I rarely use bluetooth).
Hi everybody! Is the laptop already available in any stores? I want to buy it. Where can I buy (or order) one? Thank you.
