Magpul FMG-9 flips from flashlight to submachine gun
Just when we thought we had enough problems with cops thinking innocent MP3 players were weapons, along comes this Magpul prototype FMG-9 submachine gun. Ordinarily disguised as a flashlight, a touch of a button lets you pull a Megatron and flip out a fully-functional submachine gun. If you don't want either, the whole thing folds into a back-pocket sized brick -- but as the demo dude says, if it "gets nasty, get down to business." Video after the break.

wow...I want one
but will it blend?
that's so awesome, why in the world would people want to ban guns?
Just don't drop it, thats serious business.
If you equate more gun deaths to higher public safety then this list may be of help.

"Walking the dog or take the garbage out"? "Get the mail"?? Are people that insecure?
"The ideal protection from other people who also have one!"
Depends on your neighborhood. In some areas, people are VERY strict about other dogs poopin on their lawns. What's a hick to do? Get down to business.
Also notice how he hunched over. He was probably going to shoot an angry dog about to attack his prize smell hound.
This person make a lot of sense. No-one needs a sub-machine gun for 'protection'.
"Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Guns defend people against people with smaller guns."
While i like the idea and concept of this weapon im not really looking forward to a world where we have to use it.
I was out getting the mail a few nights ago and this big-ass cougar strolled down the street.
Hell yes, I'll take two.
Does it play Doom?
No, it lets you play Doom.
But officer, that's not a gun in my pants.
;) :D
Fold up bullet proof vest? :P
that would make no sense, because when you find out you need it you would be dead, you wouldnt have time to unfold it
Yes yes... it was in vest. I mean jest.
OH...MY...GOD
I'll take 6 !
ok Goro
OH...MY...GOD
I'll take 6 !
You fail with your double-posting.
Maybe he wants 12?
He forgot to order 4 more
omg give me! oh wait, I'm not allowed to have guns anymore =D
Question. Is it an Autobot or a Decepticon?
either way, it's more than meets the eye.
Its a Decepticon for sure, Megatron's little brother actually, name is Minitron.
Decepticon...If I'm not mistaken, most all the autobots transform into vehicles, while decepticons transform into weapons and/or military things.
I'm pretty sure Soundwave did not turn into a car. He also looked surprisingly like this.
its an autobot... because its is a flashlight that fires only defensively when it transforms. Lets call Michel bay and tell him we have a new cast member. a flashlight that shoots at dogs poop... er.. i mean decepticons
This is no different than taking a Wii remote and making it look like a crossbow.
Hidden inside the hollywood shell is a "normal" automated Glock.
Yeah, really it looks like they just took a Glock 18 and put a fancy shell around it. Very cool, but not too different from that MP5K briefcase HK built a while back.
You have to admit it's at least a *little bit* different.
thats not a glock 18c, he says you can put an auto sear in it, implying that its not auto as standard, so its probably a glock 17
Where do you walk your dog and it requires a SMG Glock?
Detroit, Michigan
Miami, Florida
Washington, DC
...
Only thing you need it for in DC is to pwn overzealous condo board members and to threaten the guy at Balduccis for not cutting your smoked salmon thin enough.
Well it looks like I have a reason to buy that Glock. Me and my brother were looking , but maybe we can buy this adapter and keep it in the car, locked up of course for our road trips.
I guess its the primitive man in me that wants one. Plus playing Army of Two for 4 hours last night is not helping.
Unfortunately, even though DC is one of the few places that you would need this, you would not be allowed to have it.
@THJ - I'm thinking you haven't been to all of the neighborhoods in DC yet.
THJ - you must live in maryland
If you feel like you're going to get shot in DC, you're probably looking to get shot.
Clearly, I haven't been to (North) Miami in a bit because that is the only place I can think of that you will be shot walking your dog.
Not cool dude... Not cool.
India needs more guns.
Does it have a compass in the stock and a thing that tells time?
No, there doesn't appear to be a clock in the glock.
I think a clock in the stock of the glock would fit nicely
Ba-Dum-Dum-Chhhh...
You'll shoot your eye out.
If you put a clock in the stock of that glock you could chock it up as an innovative and useful tool.
Man one: do you have the time?
Man two: sure *pulls out gun*
not that practical but oh well :p
Added: February 11, 2008 This video has already made it around the interweb.
What a sad comment. I never knew about this gun until I read it here, at engadget.com and I'm sure I can speak for many others. Don't taint this great gadget blog with your unnecessary info.
And yet engadget releases the video a month later then introduces it to more people than all those obscure sites on the interweb did.
This reminds me of that video Michael Moore did in Harlem, NY about African Americans having black wallets and it being mistaken for a gun...
www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeOaTpYl8mE
Sad....
You'll get shot if the cops see you with this glock in your pock...et
This was introduced at the Shot Show in Las Vegas Nevada last month. It's manufacturer is mainly known for military contract/Class III prototypes and special constructions, and this has garnered a TON of favourable response. Unfortunately, this will probably not see civilian production due to it's design. It's an awsesome proof of concept, and hopefully we will see these innovations start to trickle down to the consumer market. The folding mechanisim would be excellent for underfolder stocks for PDW's and squad weapons modified for concealed use (by police, CIA and the like)
As for "Paranoid", not every place in North America is as pristine as the Beverly Hills suburb that most readers of this blog live in. Personal security forces and private guards have to deal with environments such as sparsely populated farmland, questionable urban environments and compromised environments such as concerts or the like. In any of these situations, an easily concealable but versatile device would fit the bill since you can't carry a SAW around all the time, nor do you want to.
Where could I find info. on those 12 gauge conversions of D-cell mag lights?
The problem with the places that arnt like beverly hills is that every damn person has a weapon, i live in sweden, where mostly only the police, people who shoot at target ranges as a sport, and hunters have anything that fires bullets, i live in the capitol stockholm where crime is "highest" in sweden, and i have honesty -never- had to be affraid even when walking through the roughest most warn down places in the city, why? cause people dont carry guns!!! in the worst extreme case scenario you MIGHT find someone with a knife.
Having a machinegun that can fold out from your back-pocket so its easy to carry around is just utterly pointless, its just begging for more violance, one against im sad to say that American has proven itself to be one of the most hostile places on earth, not because of terrorism, cause of the lack of good judgement, normal reasoning, and having to fight everything that crosses you, and for inventing shit like this.
The very obvious problem here is that it is more likely that dishonest people will be buying these over paranoid ordering it.
I'm certain that, in the next 6 months, we'll see gang members being busted with these.
A concert? Seriously? Yeah, you try that and let me know how it goes. ID10T.
@Max - The problem is that even in places where guns are illegal in the United States, the criminals still own guns and carry them (criminals obviously do not feel the burden to obey the law). What does Sweden do in order to keep the guns only in the hands of law abiding citizens involved in hunting and shooting sports, and out of the hands of criminals?
Common misconceptions here from people who do not own guns and don't mind stereotyping something they refuse to know.
This gun is *NOT* meant for a civilian market. ONLY for security personel. Second, over 80% of all weapons used in a crime are STOLEN!! There is NO way a gang banger will be carrying this because they don't buy guns legally! Most guns used in crimes are .22 pistols, modified .22 rifles, and SINGLE SHOT shotguns. These are guns that are usually stolen from the family closet when their house gets robbed by tweakers looking for DVD players and PS3's to pawn. Firearms like Glocks, Kel-Tecs, AK-47's and the like are VERY VERY rare in crime use. Criminals do not buy guns, they steal them from HONEST citizens. And, the proliferation of stolen guns isn't JUST an American issue, but an issue in countries that ban guns as well (You think England is crime free even when private gun ownership is nearly illegal on all fronts? No!)
Criminals will have guns no matter WHAT ban you put forth, because criminals...*gasp* DON'T FOLLOW THE LAW! Gun bans and stupid restrictions on arms for the honest citizen only encourage criminals to use guns. "Gun Free Zones" are GREAT for criminals because they know the honest folks will be unarmed and perfect victims. There is a reason why there is a second amendment: There is always a balance of power needed. Many countries like France, Spain, Italy, and other European countries allow private gun ownership and do just fine. The US gun laws are a result of the exact same morons on this board who think that guns are either toys or that anyone can go anywhere and buy a gun for $50.
Try educating yourself before acting like you have all the answers.
"ONLY for security personel." ...while they "walk their dog, get the mail, take out the garbage"?
Or did he mean "take out the garbage" in a Clint Eastwood, "Dirty Harry" sort of way?
Good phrasing... Reminds me of an article I read yesterday. They did a study saying that stupid people don't know they're stupid because they don't have the knowledge to assess their lack of knowledge or low skill level.
http://www.damninteresting.com/?p=406
On that note, I served in the military and we were allowed to purchase auto-blade knives, mil-spec weapons and the like for deployments. Things that are only for law enforcement and military have a VERY strict process for sale. This is not the same process as normal gun sales. Military ID's are damn near impossible to forge (unless you're in an episode of 24 or some major movie) and they verify with your direct commander...someone who actually knows you.
Something like this would actually be useful on a deployment and all of the Magpul weapons look like great replacements for the crap that we had. We usually got the new gear first (we were a rapid deployment unit) and none of it seemed as solid as the Magpul stuff.
@Max - I hope you weren't scared off. I was really looking forward to here whatever insight you might have had in response to my post.
*hear
Finally, neothespian, someone who is thinking with their head instead of their heart... damn bleeding heart liberals. ;) In the United States, we have come to the realization that banning guns or making it difficult for law-abiding citizens to protect themselves does not increase public safety. Law abiding citizens don't shoot each other with their hunting shotguns or concealed pistols, just because the mood strikes them. Criminals do, and you cannot keep the guns away from criminals anymore than you can keep the millions of illegal aliens in the US out of the country... its too large and free with relatively open borders to the North and South. At most, you could slightly increase the street price of a filed black-market pistol or shotgun, but you only need one and they can last a lifetime, so $50-100 bumped on the price has no effect. This has far more firepower than is needed for a regular civilian for self-defense, but its surely aimed at private security personnel and the like, were it to enter production. It would allow such security to appear much more passive than walking around constantly with a slung AR or Uzi. :)
@neothespian
@Ducman69
I can honestly not believe the arguments you are making. The 2nd Ammendment should be observed because honest law-abiding citizens must be able to protect themselves? And then, that most gun crimes are committed by individuals who steal them from those honest citizens who have them to protect themselves?
Great - so they're not going out and finding assault rifles, they're getting guns during petty thefts. Do you not see your flaw in logic? What if these honest citizens did not have these guns in their closets to begin with? Those thieves who broke in to grab a PS3 would now be without easy access to a firearm.
Self-protection? Besides the obvious argument that you could that by consciously avoiding situations that might warrant the need of a gun for protection, why not stop to think that there might not be an absolutely crystalline distinction between an "honest citizen" and a "dishonest citizen". Is it unimaginable to conceive that one might cross this barrier, or even remain somewhere in the middle, having previously committed no violent crimes, where the easy access of a gun now places lives in jeapordy given the right circumstances? It shouldn't be, because it happens in the States all the time.
Yes, SOME criminals will ALWAYS have guns. Why not mitigate the factors that allow this to happen?
Give me... to bad i am 13 cant LEGALLY own one but there must(read: are) other ways to get one.
Good idea. Way to insure you can *never* legally own a gun.
Quit messing around in the computer lab and get back to work.
Stay in school.
dont be a fool stay in school you tool and also
dont be a fool wrap your tool
Someone's gonna accidentally use the gun instead of the flashlight.
neothespian:
Well said! As soon as that bozo demo'd it as a "flashlight" at ShotShow I knew the shit would hit the fan.
The the rest of you, it's NOT a gun disguised as a flashlight. It is a short barrel rifle, that collapses into a small package. That's the idea - stock, firm platform, etc - it makes the sheeple warm and fuzzy to not see personal protection details carrying H&K UMPs - that's where this fits in.
It just so happens you can put a flashlight on it - just like any other weapon - and walk with it to light your way. But they did not intend to make it look like a flashlight. You want to see flashlight guns, look for the 12 gauge conversions of D-cell mag lights. They are WAY harder to spot as weapons and are truly a design with the intent of obfuscation.
I, for one, commend Magpul for a creative design that will ease many folks minds (those who are uncomfortable seeing weapons-clad security).
"Unfortunately, this will probably not see civilian production due to it's design"
I wouldn't say it's unfortunate...if you feel you need to carry a gun...just carry a pistol...I would things like this might be dangerous for police officers...Just one more thing for them to worry about.
what i think this would be most useful for is the same reason guns like it were originally designed back in the 20th, which is for high profile businessmen and political figures, to provide serious firepower in a discreet, small package.
this thing could easily be put in a briefcase or glove compartment.
if TSA doesnt know what a Mac Air is... would they know what this is???
haha everyone else seems to miss the part of how easy it is to shoot your fingers off holding that mini foregrip.
ya I have an air soft gun with a similar mini foregrip. Lets just say that yes in fact it is really easy to shoot your fingers off, seen it on a couple of occasions when swapping guns for a round.
I swear I know the guy that made this, but seriously the lack of high powered led is far below par.
I have a strong dislike for the civilian use of firearms, but one just has to admit this is a really slick concept. If they won't make it real, could they are least have someone produce an airsoft variant of this thing?
So did Machiavelli...
I really really want this.
for when you get really pissed off looking for the mice in your basement
or big hairy mexican rats
thats from family guys you people
oops i said you people
Makes it soooo much easier for Al Gore to fit one of these into his lockbox.
While it looks cool it isn't practical. If you need a gun you need it more available then that. Just attach a decent light to your firearm and properly ID targets before putting your finger on the trigger. It would also be illegal in a state that doesn't allow short barrel rifles assuming you paid the tax stamp for it anyways. This doesn't apply to Europeans or others not allowed to defend themselves.
Good, this means I'm *that* much closer to getting a real version of Perfect Dark's laptop gun.
Coming to a school shooting near you!
Do we really need guns that are this easy to conceal?
For those of us with CHP's living in states where not keeping your weapon concealed gets you a brandishing or assault charge, yes, yes we do.
Luckily I live in a state where anyone can open carry without a permit, so it's less important to me.
What a tool. And I'm not talking about the flashlight.
"a touch of a button lets you pull a Megatron" lol that's so funny! and it's true!
Ok, it's slick I'll give it that..... But really all this thing is, is a big frame for a Glock 17. That's it. You open up the "upper" and insert your slide & barrel from your Glock 17. Whoop-de-doo............ A giant Glock 17 that would cost an arm and a leg because it's spring loaded. Me, I'll stick with my Walther P99 for my concealed carry and my PS90 for plinking.
You can't buy one... ever.
1986 Hughes amendment closed the registry on title II weapons (i.e. machine pistols). Nothing produced after that is capable of being registered under the 1934 NFA, therefore no civilians purchase. Ever. And even if the Hughes amendment wasn't in place, you're still up for a $200 tax, federal background check including passport photos and full fingerprint card under the '34 NFA just to get a tax stamp for *that* item, meaning the process repeats for each additional title II (people call this class III for some reason) item.
Who says we have no gun control? Americans haven't been able to "walk in off the street" and buy a fully automatic weapon since NINETEEN THIRTY FOUR.
Oh, and by the way, even if they made a semiautomatic version you still have to jump through the hoops of the '34 NFA, because it's by law a short barreled rifle.
Anything with a stock and a barrel less than 16" long is a short barreled rifle and you get the $200 tax, thumbprints, federal background check yadda yadda... same with short shotguns, smoothbore cartridge pistols, nonsporting arms over .50 caliber, pistols with foregrips, semiauto shotguns with a greater than 6 (I think) round detachable magazine, and explosive devices.
No, he should have just committed suicide before shooting other people. You, on the other hand, should seek a qualified mental health practitioner immediately.
if he did, it would have been best served were it in your face. what an a##hole you are, douche boy. hope that something bad happens to you today for that HORRIBLY insensitive comment (and the thought that led to it).
Wow, how do you make jokes like that, your an effin idiot
craigJ - that was of course not directed towards you... rather the ass clown posting above you who has no respect for anything.
"Gets nasty?... get down to business." LMAO... hahaha
The Laptop Gun from Perfect Dark is back!
(without the stationary gun turret function but still!!!)
