Android lands on the N810, blows our minds
You know what's great? Synergy. We've had an OS crush on Android ever since it was first rumored, and of course the Nokia N810 has been warming our hearts for a good while now with its mysteriously useful QWERTY-tablet powers. Put the two of them together and we're practically beside ourselves with joy. If you're feeling gutsy you can try it for yourself with the handy tips over at eLinux.org, but we're content to watch this magic from the sidelines for the time being.

Video, anyone?
lmao...
wow, they nuked Mark's "first bitches!" comment. guess engadget agreed with my litany of suckitude assessment.
guess what Mark, you fail extra hard!
whatever.
whatever?
Congrats! You finally did it! Now go back to gizmodo and tell everyone how awesome your experience was!
RE: the N810 + Android, this is precisely the kind of phone that can pull me away from my blackberry (which i love).
Even though it isn't a phone?
I realize that now. I failed. :(
Still excited about Android tho. :)
Finally, a real contender of iPhone. I knew google would give us the "wow", not like somebody
Other than this being a phone..
please explain what the hell this has anything to do with an iPhone?
Anything with a screen covering more than half of it's front face is an iPhone contender/wannabe/killer, remember?
It's not a phone, and not an iPhone contender.
i could've been a contender
How is this not an iPhone contender? I think the most revolutionary part of the iPhone was the fact that it made mobile browsing a reality. The iPhone is the first (and still only) phone that has a very usable browser and interface. I've tried countless top-of-the-line smartphones, but nothing compares to the usability of iPhone's browser.
So... this IS competition for the iPhone because people who are looking for a great mobile browsing solution now have multiple options (assuming Android is comparable in usability to mobile Safari). This is especially true if a certain company could get around to Releasing WiMAX...
"I think the most revolutionary part of the iPhone was the fact that it made mobile browsing a reality."
"I've tried countless top-of-the-line smartphones, but nothing compares to the usability of iPhone's browser."
Uh, thats a contradiction if I've ever seen one. You stated you've tried other smart phones for web browsing, and I myself know for a fact that mobile web browsers WERE a reality YEARS before the iPhone's conception.
If you love your iPhone so much why don't you marry it?
The iPhone did for phones what the iPod did for pods...
This isn't a phone, people! If you're going to compare it to an Apple device, the correct comparison would be the iPod Touch. Both the Touch and N810 ONLY connect using WiFi.
see, lowest ranked. let that be a lesson to you. you talk about "marriage" and these nerds with zero prospects are going to low rank you. but not me, no sir. i have plenty of prospects. russia, thailand, estonia...
*tries to remember which other countries are on mail-order bride list*
uzbekistan. and don't forget poland!
The N810 is not a phone. It is an internet tablet.
I thought the Helio wasn't a phone?
amazing.
The n810 isn't a phone. Well unless you're using VOIP.
True, but with WiMAX and Skype In/Out (just to mention one) it might as well be! :)
Yeah, because WiMAX is everywhere!
like fiber! *moves hands in rainbow motion*
Or Wifi anywhere?
(Which is available here in my place, virtually)
both the "Read" and "Talk Android" links aren't working for me. :(
At least the reply link works. =)
not always! At least not lately... lol

(You are right about that Reply not working.)
I still have no idea why people are so excited and hyping Android so much. Sure it's open-architecture, but how is that going to make your phones better than they are now? It's Linux... well so is the iPhone (actually BSD Linux), whoop-ti-do! What's the big deal? All that matters is that the phone does what it's supposed to do and if you want custom apps there's Windows Mobile or the iPhone. I'm still missing why people are hyping this so much...
No, OS X is based on BSD UNIX. Linux is a distant cousin of Unix.
Yeah. Choice sucks, competition sucks. Let's have less of each.
it's not a dick, errr... I mean it's not a phone
You'll be able to have the same user experience as you move from phone to phone, and your data will transfer without issue, a big concern as our phones continue to do more and more. Sharing data among phones will be easier too. Most wireless company-designed phone UIs suck.
Along with this, wireless providers have promised to go open. So, in a perfect world, you pick the phone that best fits your needs, and take it to the wireless provider that best fits your needs. Imagine that!
It's even farther than that - Linux is defined NOT to be Unix (but to be Unix-like). Examine the name: GNU Linux (the GNU is often left off nowadays) - do you know what GNU stands for?
GNU = GNU's Not Unix (yes, it's a recursive acronym - funny guys, those programmers!). The very name proclaims Linux != Unix.
They aren't distant cousins, more like enemies that happen to work similarly.
your name should be "supafresh"
I totally agree with you - what is the big hype?
So what, it does what its supposed to do - thats mind blowing????
Get your head out of Googles a$$ poeple!
Because aside from microsofts limited mod-ability most of the current handsets out there now are pretty much locked into what features they offer....having an android handset pretty much guarantees that you'll be able to add whatever features become available down the line as more people develop this already awsome idea into what could be the tipping point in how we handle our digital lifestyles.....I see big things....
dead link!
Yeah, me too. The secret it to /deflect/ the deku nuts off your shield, and onto the deku shrub. Use Z-targeting. He'll pop up and give you a hint. I seriously died about 5 times this way when Ocarina of Time first came out. Come on, I was 8!
...wait, we're talking about Zelda, right?
L O L!!!
I read that and was like WTF are you talking about...I got it! That would be a "Dead Link!"
Dead link!! I wanna see!
I SEE DEAD LINK !!
That's cool and all, but what would really blow my mind would be Android on the HTC Excalibur, a.k.a. my trusty TMO Dash.
patsy, you know the Excalibur's only for Arthur, right?
Oh, but at night when Master sleeps, sometimes I sneak away with Precious and pretend it's mine, all mine! Must--resist--urge--to plunge it--into--Master's chest. No, I'm a faithful servant, I would NEVER do that!

Looks like a Creative media player
Yeah, my bad. Guess I should said *nix. I do like the idea of being able to transfer everything over to new phones as people upgrade, though I'm sure we'll see many other versions/variations/mutations evolve out of this one over time. Let's just hope the myriad of phone companies adopt it, otherwise it will be a still-birth.
Time will tell, guess the wait may soon be over.
spammers are clever. i thought this was a real comment. i really did.
Should they have installed Windows Vista on it instead on Android??
i knew it was fake.
oh cmon, can'tcha smell my sarcasm, reggie ;P
i'll have to sic NigelUK on yo arse
lmao
Would have liked this story better if the O2 Xda Flame was used instead. With the less-than-stellar support from O2/MWG, the Flame needs all the love it can get.
Obviously, he is talking about how Iphone is among the first devices to offer complete web compatibility. Other phones have offered web browsing as a feature, but a sappy downgraded version, practically incomparable to the Iphone.
So the exactness of his English isn't on par with yours. It's not even an Iphone love note.
Work on your reasoning, ya putz.
Er... ho-hum?
if you're feeling . . . GUTSY . . .
nice one!
if you meant to do that.
dude, definitely.
*nods along while calling the crazy police*
Ok, just because its made by Google does not make it mind blowing. I have seen Andriod in action and quite frankly I am not impressed. Ok so it does what its supposed to do - does that make it mind blowing??? Common people get your heads out of Googles a$$ and make some relevant posts.
I'm no Apple crazed fan boy but I can honestly tell you that the iPhone interface is much smoother and better looking then this. I think the Gazillionairs over at Google could have put a little more pizzaz into this thing.
Should I buy now? I don't have money to throw in the wind people. And of if I buy, I will buy the Wimax version even though I won't have no use for it.
So is this a freaking phone or not?
Looks like an iPhone to me. Is it a phone or just some useless device that I have no need for.
For all the hype surrounding this Android crap you'd think we'd have some solid examples of what the hell it can actually do, how its going to be used, and in which PHONES it will actually show up on.
So far I'm torn between the Samsung Instict and the iPhone 2.0 (when its announced). Other than that and the Voyager I don't see any current iPhone like devices on the horizon or on the market already.
WOOT! I have an n810 and will give this a try soon. I bought the n810 and than the iPhone and the n810 has pretty much turned into a glorified movie player for my kid since you can lock the keys. The n810 I have found to be kinda... janky. Slow, lock ups, unresponsive, boring interface, and shoty apps. Can't sync anything on it that I need either. I've updated to the latest firmware too and it's just not that great. Hopefully Android will take care of that and the lack of syncing options.
Another reason for me to cry myself to sleep over the fact that the N810 doesn't have a sim slot.
WHY???
WHY???
This is obviously the PERFECT phone hardware. PERFECTION.
Display:
HUGE-HiRes-Rectangular-Touchscreen
Input:
Physicial QWERTY - Touchscreen
Connectivity:
WiMAX and everything else.
Physical Appearence:
Whole body Display, Thin package.
...and now, software-wise:
Android.
WHY Nokia WHY. Why didn't you add a sim slot and charge us WHATEVER U WANTED.
Because they know you'll break down and buy it eventually anyway.
Then, the next month, they'll announce the N900 with OMAP3440 and SIM slot.
And charge you WHATEVER THEY WANT.
YES YES YES YES YES!!! FINALLY THE N810 I BOUGHT CAN ACTUALLY BE CONSIDERED USEFUL!!!! OMG. HAI HAI, k. thnx. bai, come again! :)
