While we patiently wait for Nokia's current, "
no major new products" fiscal quarter to expire, we'll have to trudge through releases like these 5320 (left) and 5220 (your other left) candybars. As members of the
XpressMusic range the devices themselves are fine. Unfortunately, fine isn't going to win back that 1% lost market share. The 3G HSDPA 5320 (€220 / $351) features dedicated music and N-Gage gaming keys, a 3.5-mm headphone jack, up to 24-hours of play time, up to 8GB of expandable storage, and a "Say and Play" voice controlled playlist; speak the name of the artist or song you want and the phone will play it. The (€160 / $255) 5220 removes the HSDPA but adds a lanyard... hoorah!? Expect both to land in Europe sometime in Q3 2008.

I'm sorry but the one on the right is extremely ugly with the "elongated-off-centre" look

Q3 2008? The 3G iPhone will be out by then.
L @ Apr 22nd 2008 3:58AM
And I'm sure they're competing for the same consumer group. *sigh*
Actually, the 5220 is 160€ before subsidizes and taxes, or in other words, DIRT CHEAP. I wouldn't be surprised whatsoever if these two become best sellers and very much help reclaiming that 1% market share they've lost recently. Market share is always created by low-/mid-end devices, dear Mr. Ricker, you know?

The iPhone doesn't really compete with ALL the phones out there. A lot of people love their Nokias for text messaging. People love their Nokias for a lot of other things. It may not be as sleek or sophisticated as the iPhone with its fancy touch interface, but it's what they like. Just quoting from 'My Best Friend's Wedding': "You are Creme Bruleé. You can never be Jello. But he prefers Jello."
Price sucks though. This 'jello' is freaking expensive at $351. $200 for the non-HSDPA and $300 for the HSDPA would be fine. BTW the one with the lanyard slot reminds me of Nokia phones from a decade ago.

Long live competition. If the 3G Iphone gets sold unlocked (even if only everywhere except for US & AT&T country) it will provoke much more than a 1% drop in Nokia's market share. Even the N95 falls short as an attempt for being an inventive or daring product. Being defensive is not sufficient facing companies like Samsung & LG. Perhaps Nokia has been watching too much the Motorola's of the world.

"This 'jello' is freaking expensive at $351"
Not bad for a subsidy free smartphone (it runs S60). I imagine it would be free with a contract.

Who needs symmetry?
Shinigami @ Apr 22nd 2008 7:12AM
Umm.... me?
Anthony @ Apr 22nd 2008 11:38AM
I agree. I like how it looks & it wouldn't affect how you hold or use it. Nothing in nature is symmetrical. Why not have technology reflect that to some degree?

1.) They look good in my opinion, unless you're not a fan of abstract art.
2.) They are so clearly not in competition with the iPhone that its almost not worth pointing it out but from past experience on this site, it needs to be stated.
3.) I have an N95 with a few N - Gage games and i find it very difficult to play them in any orientation without buttons on either side of the screen.

The super weak dollar must be hurting Nokia's sales in the US even further. Those prices look very reasonable in euros, but in dollars they are admittedly a bit expensive.
Nice looking devices anyway, at least the one on the left.
sk @ Apr 22nd 2008 6:14AM
The 5220 when flipped on to your right hand side would make a nice design for a gaming console. Maybe that design was supposed to go on the 5320 which has the N-Gage abilities and the gaming keys ?
John P @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:24AM
I would seriously consider the one of the left if it were one of those free or close-to-free phones offered at contract time, and I hadn't gotten used to the qwerty-style keyboard on my palm. But regardless, these are nice looking phones, and it just goes to show how stuck up engadget can be when it comes to new handhelds.
bachviet @ Apr 22nd 2008 11:30AM
The 5320 is a S60v3 phone (hopefully with FP2) and if T-Mobile US carries this phone (w/ 3G), I would get it to replace my 5700 XpressMusic.

I'm suprised with the comment that these phones wouldnt get them back to 40% Mshare because if anything these phones are just about that. Those phones that make that % are not N95(even if their Q1 reported to sell them over 10 millions ;)). Though as a phone junkie i was waiting for them to release E71, E66 or music flagship phone today :(
And please could people already stop that iphone sh1t Apple isnt going to compete with Nokia in emergin markets and the one whos taking the hit is Moto who's the one who got the $ in NA. Nokia will be the one taking least hit from USA problems and HUGE amount of iphones sold ;D
And hopefully Apple will keep it like that because the position they are now makes it possible to release something as good as iphone and not to worry about things that big players need to face with the phones they release.
