ASUS Eee PC 900 display retrofitted into 701
We've already seen one engineering bloke stuff a touch panel into a Cloudbook, so we figured it was only a matter of time before that luscious 8.9-inch unit from the Eee PC 900 found its way into the pioneering 701. According to jkkmobile, all that was necessary in order to make the mod happen was a good bit of reworking around the bezel and a BIOS hack to enable full-screen support on a larger display. Unfortunately, a step-by-step guide has yet to be posted (though it's likely forthcoming), but you can gaze upon a smattering of photos right now by giving the read link a visit.

Hello Everybody, Moto Is Back.

Smart move. Buy a 900, trash it, cram its display into the 700 and pat yourself on the back. :)

Maybe he liked the 701 screen so much that he wanted the 701 screen on the 900. The 900 screen on the 701 was just and after-thought =)

Hands down worst mod of all time.

Awesome.
To people saying this is useless .. not when u have a 900 whose motherboard crapped out on you (say water got spilled all over it).
Besides, people do all kinds of "useless" things, it's called having fun, recreation, sports, and maybe even *gasp* brain exercise.

The situation you describe is about the only thing I can think of that makes this hack accomplish anything. It'd be different if the 900 was even slightly different under the hood, but it really isn't. Underclocking your 900 would be essentially the same result.

I was expecting to find someone cutting off the bezel on their 701 and installing the same OEM 8.9" LCD used in the 900.
Instead I see the retrograde destruction of a 900.

Agreed. Why buy a new EEE in the first place? This isn't really a mod. Its more of a transplant.
JAmerican @ May 3rd 2008 4:25PM
BTW I didn't get the step-by-step guide but I bet I can tell you what it is...
1) Buy an EEE 900.
2) Open it and take the screen out.
3) Open your EEE 700/701/702
4) Remove Screen and all items inside screen
5) Place EEE 900 screen inside EEE 700/701/702.
6) Connect the existing connector from the EEE 900 into the EEE 700/701/702 board
7) Turn on EEE

C'mon gang.. have a bit of imagination! The reality is jkkmobile has both the 701 and 900 and over at eeeuser.com forums, we have all been waiting and hoping that someone would take this plung to "TEST IT OUT".. So, no he did not trash a 900, or buy a 900 just to get the screen on the 701.. He took a leap of faith to test the connector, it worked.. Now its a matter of hacking the bios and bezel (and no, it has not "yet" been done). Although, it likely will..
So, why you ask? Because, once I see it working, then I will wait patiently for someone who trashed their 900 mobo to come to ebay so I can pickup a good 8.9 screen to do the hack myself. Why am I not just buying a 900 you ask? Why should I? That would ruin all the fun the mod brings in the first place? Get it now? Each to his own as they say..
LarryLarryLarry @ May 3rd 2008 7:24PM
So your "plan" for making this sensible is to *wait for someone to eBay their broken 900*. Okay.
Is it really such a challenge for someone to find an OEM 8.9" screen which is compatible with the 900 and then install that screen on the 701?
And of course it's not even something to think about until the BIOS hack has been accomplished.

Thanks. I'm going to do this mod right away.

But what's really the point? Nothing has really been gained here, except for the proof that it can be done. And from the photo, the image on the display doesn't even line up at all. There was just no need.

please step back out of the R&D Lab and go back to your cubicle in accounting.

I read it and still don't get it... Wouldn't it just be easier and give you better results if you just took off the 701 markings and put them onto the 900?
That way you would have the bigger screen and better performance of a 900 in a 'modified 701'.
Just my two cents
Nikola Dachev @ May 4th 2008 11:48AM
beyond the proof that it REALLY is possible that's total waste of time and resources. The price difference between 900 and 700 series doesn't justify the exchange parts and time spent let alone the risk of ending up with broken equipment.
My 2 cents too - Nikola Dachev (http://www.zeraha.org)

This will only work if the non modders try this break their 900 and then put it on ebay for cheaps, then the modders rejoice and buy the screens and then be successful.
