Sugar Labs already in talks with four laptop makers
Walter Bender might be disappointed in the OLPC's defection to Windows XP, but the former head of Sugar OS development isn't sitting still: he's already founded Sugar Labs, and early word is that he's in preliminary discussions with four ultra-low-cost laptop makers to ship the kid-friendly operating system on their machines soon. Bender's already said he's interested in working with Intel and Pixel Qi, and he's mentioned ASUS in passing, but no names are being confirmed, so we'll see where this leads -- Bender seems pretty driven to get Sugar out there.

Wow... four? That's a big number.
Count with me:
One a-ha-ha-ha
Two a-ha-ha-ha
Three a-ha-ha-ha
Four a-ha-ha-ha
FOUR LAPTOP MAKERS
Maybe Engadget jr. will care. Oh, there's no such thing? Then put it in the who gives a sh*t pile. How come you rarely if ever talk about window managers anyone uses or cares about?

Four laptop makers in around a month. That's pretty damn good.
Rob P @ May 23rd 2008 9:02AM
Indeed. A golf clap for Sugar Labs. Still not newsworthy. I'd rather read more ill-advised 3G iPhone salivating than this.... at least the other thing involves a widely used gadget, not a kiddie window manager. Hats off to them... they put the 'novel' in novelty.

Believe me my friend, four makers in this short a space of time is a spectacular rebound for Sugar Labs. I'm not a fan of the OS, but someone with some pretty decent business skills is driving this thing.

Rob P,
sorry for pissing in your cereal this morning
; )
johnnyg0 @ May 23rd 2008 9:29AM
Wow Rob, you really are dedicated..
Mr. Picklesworth @ May 23rd 2008 9:50AM
It's not a window manager, it's a desktop environment. It does /use/ an unusual window manager, though.
adrian @ May 23rd 2008 11:31AM
It's a start, But don't worry Rob, You keep following the Microsoft way of doing things and they will keep taking your cash.
Rob P @ May 23rd 2008 11:56AM
tekdroid, if you truly did piss in my cereal, thank you -- it really accented my Cinnamon Life :)
Mr. Picklesworth -- ahhh my mistake
adrian -- I didn't know Microsoft made Ubuntu nowadays... or my iPod... hmm... come to think of it... outside of my 360 I own nothing that runs Microsoft software... but we a nice consolation prize for you
I loved the OLPC initiative BEFORE XP jumped on board... and I have nothing against Sugar, despite my opinions on who the majority of the userbase is... my problem was that I don't think being "in talks" is news, no matter how many companies it is, four (a-ha-ha) or more. I kinda lashed out irrationally I suppose... and my point was poorly received... my mistake :D

intel352 @ May 23rd 2008 11:20AM

Tyson @ May 23rd 2008 8:30AM
they meant kid-friendly no?
IT-Accountant @ May 23rd 2008 8:35AM
Of course. I was just unfairly poking fun at engadget.
Tyson @ May 23rd 2008 8:38AM
in which case in the words of Nelson on the Simpsons... HaHa
iTroubleiShoot @ May 23rd 2008 9:37AM
kind = kid in German ;) ... as in kind(er)garten ... where they nourish kids into either volatile man-eating venus flytraps or docile daffodils...
yummm... daffodils.

Why can't we let this OS die?
Dear Microsoft, please design Windows 7 with an ultraflexible kernel that can be modularly designed to run on ultra-high-end boxes and also on the ultra-low-wattage design of Netbooks.
kthnxbai.
Ringo Start @ May 24th 2008 7:44AM
Dear Microsoft, please design Windows 7 to be even more bloated than Vista so that Linux, which already runs fine on anything from a mobile phones to super computers, can take over your market share. :D
El Taco @ May 24th 2008 12:14PM
pfft! You wish!
The only thing Microsoft ever does is listen to customers, then say, "NAH! We know what they want more than they do!" and make what they think people want.
Rohit Kapur @ May 23rd 2008 11:04AM
I can just envision the following conversation:
"Why is the laptop not running??"
"Sorry, sir. The kids ate the battery. . ."
