20th Anniversary Mac unboxing video kind of makes us wish product had never existed
There aren't many ways to hop in the time machine and enjoy old-school hardware the way it was meant to be enjoyed, and that's what makes virgin unboxings of vintage equipment so very special. If even for just a few moments, it's an opportunity to pretend that you're in a bygone era where computers, portables, and miscellaneous gizmos held a mystique that has long since been replaced by the monotony of modern ubiquity. We want to emphasize that "just for a few moments" part, a phrase clearly lost on the proud recipient of a new-in-box 20th Anniversary Macintosh -- an aberration in the Apple family tree that cost a staggering $7,500 back in 1997, so we imagine there weren't many tycoons sitting around with enough cash, tech savvy, and collector mentality to buy one and leave it sitting untouched in its cardboard for ten-plus years. Despite the rarity and coolness of this gentleman's find, we found ourselves screaming "just get to the [obscene] unboxing already," "Batman & Robin is the movie you're trying to think of, now can we please continue for the love of all that's good and holy," and "are you ever going to turn it on, or should I just go ahead and gouge my eyes out now?" by the time the 23-minute marathon had reached its anticlimactic conclusion. Word to the wise: if you're going to take your life into your hands and click through to the movie, do yourself a favor and fast-forward liberally. Meanwhile, we're cool going another 20 years without seeing one of these things.

lanejasper69 @ May 27th 2008 3:54PM
Actially there have been several in Jerry's apt. I have seen an SE30 and a Centris 610 and the 20th Cent.!! Jerry Loves Macs!! LOL
Cool still though, now you see them in everything, but back a few years, it was somewhet rare to see.
Good Catch!

Where is the mouse?
Buis @ May 27th 2008 3:01AM
It has a trackpad

What kind of sick person would use a trackpad on a desktop?
Ted Brown @ May 27th 2008 2:43AM
It's amazing that company stayed in business after creating something as absurd as that piece of equipment.
joey @ May 27th 2008 10:14AM
B&O does this all the time.
Ghen @ May 27th 2008 5:50PM
The railroad? I'm not seeing where you're pointing.
YourTechSupport @ May 27th 2008 2:45AM
And to think for $230 or I can get the same processing power in an internet tablet.
ChiWax @ May 27th 2008 2:48AM
That thing did not load faster than my best Vista machine. What am I doing wrong that I can't get Vista to suck like this guy's does? I feel like a lone wolf or something. Even when I watch a video about a 10 year old Mac I wonder why my Vista is so smooth....Q
Colin Potter @ May 27th 2008 3:02AM
are you complaining/comparing your vista machine to an underpowered 10 year old machine?
1. of course your computer is faster, it has way more power in every department
2. your computer is not 10 years old, if it were, it would be in the garbage dump
ChiWax @ May 27th 2008 3:06AM
my comment was made in conjunction with something the guy in the video said. I thought this was a comment string about the video at the top. MY BAAAAAD....Q

FAILED
Prezzie @ May 27th 2008 2:53AM
I think this will describe this video in every way:
lol
Colin Potter @ May 27th 2008 2:52AM
does it bother anyone else that this 10 year old mac has better color levels than the current macbook?
Camperton @ May 27th 2008 4:52AM
That's crazy talk.
Joachim Bengtsson @ May 27th 2008 12:57PM
My brother has one of these, I got to play Diablo 1 on it when I visited as a kid, and I can tell you, the refresh rate was horrible :) Everything had trails! Just like any LCD back in those days... But the sound, the sound was excellent :)
ChiWax @ May 27th 2008 2:55AM
"They didn't know how right they were!!" Excuse me the "tour" didn't say "Computers for rich people who hate computing and have money to burn and burn and burn." Then the "tour" would've be right. Q.
Matt Packer @ May 27th 2008 3:19AM
Wow, that was tough to watch.
Longest un-boxing ever.
ChiWax @ May 27th 2008 3:08AM
Cracks about Vista(which I don't understand from vast personal experience) seem to make their way into everything Mac. That includes this video...and that was my only point...Q
Juice Daddy @ May 27th 2008 4:25AM
jealousy perhaps?
fred @ May 27th 2008 7:38AM
It seems some Apple users have a hard time not doing that. However, if a PC user was to say somthing similar, they would fly into a rage.
Being a snob + fanatic + sensitive will get you that type of person.
ChiWax @ May 27th 2008 3:10AM
That comment was for C. Potter....Q
Ray @ May 27th 2008 3:11AM
omg that was horrible, really didnt think id make it
what ever happened to the good old unboxing videos that are under 5 minutes?
Darkest Daze @ May 27th 2008 3:59AM
How about the unboxing of something worth unboxing. They may have put "Anniversary Special Edition" on the box, but in reality, it's another piece of trash, relic from computing past. Then again, I'm not much for nostalgia of products that are ugly and useless in this day and age. Call me when a mint condition Shelby GT 500 is "unboxed". At least that can keep up with modern products in the same line and has somewhat of an elegant design.
Blaktornado @ May 27th 2008 10:44PM
Basically, now everyone wants to be rich and famous for nothing, videos like these last as long as the "film maker" (if they even deserve that title) can make them before the Youtube time limit is exceeded, stuffing as much crap in there to get as many views as they can.
The internet has carved such a sad yet wonderful world out of the planet Earth.
Eckofish @ May 27th 2008 3:14AM
I don't think that the writer of this post was fair or objective in the way that they approached this.
The host of this video happens to be a really nice guy [Alfred] who's video's are enjoyed by thousands every week on YouTube.
I thought the video was pretty good, considering the rarity of the unboxing. It's always nice to live vicariously through someone elses unboxing.

Darren @ May 27th 2008 3:40AM
I'm not familiar with this guy's work, but I agree.
I can't image what an unopened Twentieth Anniversary Mac would pull on Ebay, but it's got to be a small fortune.
If you have a shrink-wrapped, rare collectable, you probably have to wrestle with the decision just to open it up in the first place. And when you do, you'd certainly want to document the whole experience, because you can only open it once.
Jazz Malang @ May 30th 2008 1:14PM
Yeah, Alfred is a great guy and this is a small snippet of what his videos cover. Just because you don't like one of his videos shouldn't mean he should be shunned. If you are nostalgic at all go take a look at his profile and enjoy the wealth of information he has provided to the internet.
BrokenMonkey @ May 28th 2008 10:54PM
I really liked the video, even if it were a bit slow at times. This is basically how I would be unboxing a 10 year old PC. The guy who wrote this post is just an asshole.
yyy @ May 27th 2008 3:20AM
My god, that manual is as thick as a history book :-o Did they really think someone's going to read all that?

Where you drunk, high, or heavily medicated at the time of your posting/s? You sound incoherent and speak pure nonsense.
Stuart @ May 27th 2008 3:49AM
Is it me or is the commentator a MAJOR PRICK!!! From the moment that he commented about the camera man shaking the camera at the beginning I knew this guy had a serious attitude problem that needs a proper adjusting.
