Creative's Vado Pocket Video Cam unboxed on video
There's honestly not a lot of mind-blowing material in the video posted up after the jump, but it definitely delivers as advertised. You see, you've got Creative's Flip Video-combating Vado cheapcorder all wrapped up, and over the course of 317 seconds, it manages to slip outside of its shell and get handled. Initial impressions are dished out too (hint: they're surprisingly positive), so don't skip out on hitting the read link while your cursor is down in the general vicinity.

Why get something like this when a lot of digital cameras take this kind of video?
MY dig camera takes 640x480 (also wide screen version) at 30fps and also allows 8gig sd cards and above. Its mainly a photo camera though.
So what is the point of things like this?
Aguiluz @ May 31st 2008 1:30PM
Because it's cheap.
$99 cheap.

Unboxed, videoed and TELEVISED on Fox News!?
:)
JTM @ May 31st 2008 1:38PM
I don't think it was televised. That was a youtube video.
Aguiluz @ May 31st 2008 3:39PM
LOL, That's what first popped into my head when I saw the image. :)
iEye @ May 31st 2008 1:39PM
They should have used the same camera to do the unboxing... that way we can see the craptacular quality. That $99 is better spent towards the new 3G iPhone.
RikF @ May 31st 2008 1:43PM
I'm not sure whether to digg you up for your gall and inventiveness in finding a way to link this to an as yet unannounced Apple product or bury you for your fanboyism.
Oh wait, I am sure...
KEROLiUKAS @ May 31st 2008 2:05PM
Yes, the iPhone..oh wait that crappy phone doesn't even record video so i don't see how it's better than this video camera????
wow some people are just plain f**king stupid.
Nohone @ May 31st 2008 2:58PM
So $99 for a adequate video recorder, or $399 for the cheapet iPhone + $70/month for 2 years == $2079 for a phone with no video camera, which means you still need to pay $99 to buy a video recorder.
$99
KEROLiUKAS @ May 31st 2008 3:01PM
@ Nohone
Exactly my point.
Wwhat @ Jun 1st 2008 2:24PM
There seems to be dozens of videos about the thing on youtube, including ones with footage shot with it, and from what I saw the quality is pretty fair.

Fox News... the future source for tech reports.

Reporter: "And here's Ryan with the unboxing and hands-on of the new E-E-E P-C 901"
Ryan: "This E-E-E P-C is the newest and best from A-Zeus, it's perfect for a college student on the go, its small, its portable, its efficient, and best of all it runs this revolutionary new O-S or Operating System called Lie-Nux"
ew.
JJV @ May 31st 2008 3:12PM
I'm pretty sure its Liiiiiiiiiiiiiiii-Nux
not lie-nux
Colin Potter @ May 31st 2008 3:33PM
JJV
i know. the point i was making is that most people in mainstream news media (ie. local newscasters) have no idea about things like that.
JJV @ May 31st 2008 3:54PM
oh. i thought you meant Ryan Block who would know how its pronounced.
hehe.
eugene @ May 31st 2008 2:11PM
Flip's packaging is a lot nicer. I rather the AA of the Flip than the recharge proprietary Creative battery (if I want rechargeable AA, I'll get some eneloops). Bigger screen is pretty nice though.
t3_slider @ May 31st 2008 2:28PM
The Flip is butt-ugly compared to this, and this is smaller (but with a bigger screen), lighter, cheaper and produces the same quality video. Flip who*?
*Assuming the battery life is comparable...
Colin Potter @ May 31st 2008 2:57PM
you mean the same RESOLUTION video... theres a lot of factors aside from resolution that decide video quality
t3_slider @ May 31st 2008 6:14PM
True, but at this point in time I don't think it can be said that one has better quality either way. At least on paper this is the better buy.
Wwhat @ Jun 1st 2008 2:25PM
I read the creative one does in fact give better quality, but of course seeing is believing in these matters.
Ray-- @ May 31st 2008 2:29PM
is creative still in business?
cDub @ May 31st 2008 11:19PM
I don't know how they have survived so long without a true ZVM replacement.

Fox 13 News from Utah! I'm from Utah...
Fox 13 is just about the most ridiculous news (even local news broadcast, ever). Nearly every report is about some crazy dude that's building a fort about twinkies or something, or the extreme dangers of teens and myspace.
Christian Torkelson @ May 31st 2008 10:00PM
I know your making a satirical summation of the pointless stories on fox news...
...but I would have thought that since News Corp bought Myspace all that criticism would have had to have gone out with window along with journalistic integrity.
Nohone @ May 31st 2008 3:00PM
Apparently it cut off the last part of my message (didn't like the less than symbol)
$99 is less than $2178
Good plan there iBoy.
JJV @ May 31st 2008 3:09PM
Wait, so its an video of a video camera? thats kind of redundant but okay
lol
Zorque @ May 31st 2008 4:32PM
Hey, that's my local Fox mirror. Too bad they didn't actually air this, I'm getting tired of stories about David Archuleta.
Gregg @ May 31st 2008 4:47PM
The new RCA Small Wonders are better than both the Flip and the Vado. The Small Wonder is almost is smaller than the Flip and just a half inch thicker than the Vado. It has a fold-out LCD and an expandable MicroSD slot. Plus it's cheaper. I just ordered the Small Wonder EZ200 from Buy for $87.

The bias on Engadget is just getting ridiculous. Why be surprised that Creative makes a good product? Creative has ALWAYS made good products.
Wwhat @ Jun 1st 2008 9:28AM
Isn't it time engadget thinks up a acronym for such devices? For instance FBPV: flash based pocket video, although that one doesn't look so clean.
PFVC, portable flash video camera maybe? although 3 letters might be better.
I'll leave it up to engadget, but they should really get on that.
