We hear Apple popped out
a new phone or something today. All hearsay, but we though we'd run it by you. The $199 pricepoint for the 8GB, Exchange support, A-GPS and 3G data all make an extremely compelling case, but Apple still has plenty to improve on -- there's still no physical keyboard, if you hadn't noticed (a dealbreaker for some), and Apple has yet to confirm things as common-sensical as copy and paste, video recording and MMS. There's also another little problem for a few folks out there: the resale price on your iPhone is now approximately nil, so good luck offloading that sucker. But enough about what we think, what's on your mind?

No, I am not.
AC @ Jun 9th 2008 6:49PM
neither am I, I don't intend to switch networks anytime soon.
Blaine Oliver @ Jun 9th 2008 6:49PM
When they stop posting constant apple related iphone posts, and i can actually give the thing a play with, will decide if i should get it.
Aprime @ Jun 9th 2008 7:00PM
I might, if they ever make it car-appealing (like having an iPod/MP3 player is) - and Bluetooth isn't enough to do that, my present phone does it.
spass @ Jun 9th 2008 7:04PM
No! apart from the 3G and GPS, I am disappointed with the "updates" they made today.
Also, I was really hoping for a better camera. Nokia has been using 5mp cameras in their phones for about two years now...
switchbitch @ Jun 9th 2008 7:12PM
If you do, with that 2 year contract you'll still be toting around a handset in 2010 that only has a 2MP camera. Ouch!
2 years without MMS, 2 years without cut and paste, 2 years not transferring anything via bluetooth, 2 years with limited application availability, 2 years without Java, 2 years with a crippled handset lacking so many things the rest of us take for granted. And you reckon that battery's gonna last 2 years? Reckon you'll be hammered into the same coffin as the iPhone 1.0 this time next year?
Apple phone whatever, I'd rather have a banana phone.

I don't understand why "No-I don't want to switch carriers" wasn't a choice. I don't care how good the new iPhone is, AT&T's network is just inferior to Verizon's, at least where I live.
Sean @ Jun 9th 2008 7:37PM
There should be another category.... no I can't.
AT&T doesn't have service in Vermont. SUre you can roam here but that's not the same.
Cal @ Jun 9th 2008 7:38PM
Why isn't there a plain 'No.' answer? I don't want apple to keep trying and I don't want an iphone...
Saad Rabia @ Jun 9th 2008 7:48PM
I'm really on the edge with this one, in one hand the 3G, GPS and the ridiculously low price tag are very interesting, but in the other hand, I feel disappointed for not seeing much of a difference, it's like they changed one chip inside the iPhone, and made the battery a little bigger, which explains the new 3 techs with higher battery life.
I don't want to sound so negative, but I really feel that the iPhone at this stage is -again, using Apple's marketing techniques instead of really upgrading the iPhone; Same camera, same typing methods with no copy or paste, no MMS, no front camera, no Video, No flash support inside Safari, no my own ring tunes, and the whole same negatives, with the same value which they hid nicely (this time) inside telecom contracts, apps store, and music purchases.
I said it before, I will chose between the iPhone, Diamond and X1; other than the high price tags of the last two, I can not see any killing feature the iPhone has over them. I also might consider the Samsung Omnia, it is even much more promising than any of the three mobiles I talked about.
You know what? it is all a matter of taste and opinion, iPhone is great, Diamond is also great and Samsung's Omina seems to be great along with X1.
I will wait for another 2 weeks, or until iPhone 3G is out to see what it really can do better than the other mobiles, I want, especially that the Omnia has 3.5 G which is available at my country and from my operator.
So for me, it is a: No for iPhone 3G.
ak @ Jun 9th 2008 7:50PM
@switchbitch
you do realize that most carriers out there do have this neat thing called an upgrade policy, right? (eligibility typically starts @ about 1 year of service)
Vidit Bhargava @ Jun 9th 2008 7:51PM
na...not at all
Abuzar @ Jun 9th 2008 8:03PM
No. I like how the HTC Touch Diamond had more buttons and I prefer the interface. So it's either the Diamond, or the Diamond with a keyboard(forgot the new name, it used to be Raphael).
Mike10010100 @ Jun 9th 2008 8:20PM
@ak
If one were to READ this exchange program, one would see that for AT&T, the iPhone doesn't apply for an exchange. Caveat emptor. Switchbitch's argument still stands.
WauloK @ Jun 9th 2008 8:51PM
No, I don't think so. The memory is too small for enough music for most people and with the excessive charges for mobile data in Australia the web browsing and even MobileMe will be cost prohibitive for most of the population.
I can see some people buying it, but it won't be a huge number.
happy_penguin @ Jun 9th 2008 8:25PM
"Saad Rabia @ Jun 9th 2008 7:48PM
I'm really on the edge with this one"
Wrong, Saad. You have to get a 1st gen iPhone to be on EDGE.
Niki @ Jun 9th 2008 8:34PM
how about a "No, AT&T has crappy service?"
Matt @ Jun 9th 2008 9:36PM
Honestly, as a Blackberry user, this new iPhone is intriguing. However, I dont believe I can leave the Blackerry OS that I've come to love and the openess of the software (and the new Bold coming out is making me anxious). I have a question though, will you have to pay the extra 3G fee on the Bold? Is it time to make the switch?
Is there anyone else torn between decisions?
LegendZ28 @ Jun 9th 2008 10:16PM
The resale value of my last gen iPhone's is actually pretty damn high, considering it doesn't require anyone to sign a contract to get and can be hacked to work on other carriers.
Copenhagun @ Jun 9th 2008 10:37PM
I'm considering it as long as I'm not forced to get the data plan. Honestly, I'd rather have an HTC Touch Pro or even the Samsung Glyde if I could get it for ATT.
c|ak @ Jun 10th 2008 12:06AM
I hope Apple will sell them online and ship them activated. That way, I don't have to be embarrassed when I fail the credit report by 301 points.
Anyways, I'd get the white one, if they had gone with a white bezel. Oh, how sweet that could've been! Why must we all get a black front, Mr. Ive? Why? Why? Why? Waaah!
matthewlikestoburn @ Jun 10th 2008 7:33AM
no, it's too expensive and technology can do much, much more than this.
matrevey @ Jun 10th 2008 11:49AM
...nope

im not gonna get 1, only because i cant. what im into is the ipod touch, which doesnt seem like such a good idea anymore
$100 more for less features? i dunno man
i guess thats not really true anymore because the att people have to activate it for you.... you cant just buy as a "gift" and then unlock with ziphone. your locked into that $60/month. still, im kinda pissed that there wasnt a price drop or at least a newer version for the touch....
Dave @ Jun 11th 2008 12:50AM
Dear clak,
As usual, you are a tool of everything Apple. Whether it be good, bad, or 3rd party accessory, your lips will stay permanently attached to the ass of Steve Jobs, even while he is continuously shitting in your face. Nice life. Enjoy your 2MP camera and no MMS capability in 2010 (since you will still be on contract then).
Sincerely,
Everyone getting an X1, HTC Dream, Touch Pro, Blackberry Bold, Blackberry Thunder, the list goes on...
slaanesh24 @ Jun 11th 2008 7:44PM
What if the iphone 3g will be released in july 11? and can I use it here in the philippines?
Owen @ Jul 13th 2008 12:51PM
I have an iPod Touch which I'm quite satisfied with as I don't have to pay the extremely high monthly AT&T service charge. The price of the iPhone 3G isn't that low - it's simply subsidized by AT&T's high service charge. That's the dealbreaker for me.
Ryan @ Jun 9th 2008 6:48PM
not until they remove contract requirements!
Liam @ Jun 9th 2008 6:50PM
I'm sure it won't be all that difficult to jailbreak.
peshue @ Jun 9th 2008 6:52PM
Same here. If the contract is a pos I'm going to going for one of the new htcs for sure.
Ryan @ Jun 9th 2008 6:53PM
No, it probably will not be hard to jailbreak / unlock at all.. but that doesn't negate the fact that you are now REQUIRED to sign up for a voice and data plan and a 2 year contract IN store and no longer allowed to buy and take home to 'activate'... also, since apple nor att will not be selling this online, it looks like this will be hard to get around -- here is to hoping they offer them at full price ($399/$499??) without contracts.. but there is not even any indication of that at this point..
happy_penguin @ Jun 9th 2008 8:33PM
I have never had any phone without a service contract and the only service provider other than ATT I would go with would be Verizon which doesn't support iPhone. All other services in my area suck major ass. The contract means nothing to me.
But, I'm going to stick with my old iPhone. The 3G data costs $10/mo more and I don't see the need for myself. In my experience with my 3G USB modem, 3G is often not that much faster than EDGE. By the time they come out with the third gen iPhone, I will probably be ready to upgrade. Or perhaps sooner, but not today.
Nice new iPhone but no thanks... for today. I already have one and it's working just fine.
David @ Jun 9th 2008 8:54PM
In the UK (O2) it will be available on pay as you go...
chickenator @ Jun 9th 2008 10:21PM
yeah me too. only when the non-contract unit made available i'll get it.
creepinshadow @ Jun 9th 2008 6:48PM
hell yeah i'm getting one.
I'll even get two!!!
one for the left ear and one for the right!! j/k
carlo2 @ Jun 9th 2008 7:49PM
that could make up for SOME of the A2DP problem...
dima @ Jun 9th 2008 11:09PM
Hahahaha wow. awesome comment carlo2
A Gupta @ Jun 9th 2008 6:48PM
Yep, I think it's about time to take the plunge.
A Gupta @ Jun 9th 2008 6:49PM
That is, as soon as it's jailbroken. I'm quite happy with my current plan, thx.
willyu34 @ Jun 9th 2008 6:50PM
even if it's jailbroken you'll still be stuck with an ATT plan... what's the point?
kevinm @ Jun 9th 2008 6:52PM
You can unlock it, meaning t-mobile or any other carrier overseas.
rock99rock @ Jun 10th 2008 11:40AM
@ Kevinm
Yo unlock it, you have to have it.
To have it, you have to sign a contract, no ifs ands or buts.
You wont be seeing too many of these on the ebays...
Itsuru @ Jun 9th 2008 6:48PM
I'll probably get one, it's the price point that's done it for me. Even though it'll probably be OVER £200 in the UK.
CraigJ @ Jun 9th 2008 6:51PM
Steve specifically said $200 everywhere. We'll see how that works out.
Itsuru @ Jun 9th 2008 6:56PM
I really doubt it'd be around £100 :(
Ethan @ Jun 9th 2008 7:36PM
It should be about £130 considering extra tax but no, really it's never going to be that.
nickajax2 @ Jun 9th 2008 7:38PM
And probably around €200 (which is about $312) in the Netherlands and other European countries.
Samurai Jack @ Jun 9th 2008 7:40PM
I thought El Jobso was clear when he said it would have a *maximum* price of $199 worldwide for the 8GB model. In other words, carriers can charge less but Apple will prevent them from charging more.
Si @ Jun 9th 2008 7:40PM
I feel the same, I would be AMAZED if it were to be £100 here in the u.k :( Maybe O2 will put together a deal, maybe 3yr contract £299 phone?
