Dell's Pocket Projector is easy to overlook

We can't blame you if you missed it, but Dell's latest leaked PowerPoint had one little gem tucked away near the end of the 31 slide deck. No, not the Coolslice homeslice, rather the Pocket Projector. Weighing just 1.1 pounds, this LED projector is either incredibly small, or that's a Texas-sized coffee mug... either of which could be true in Dell country. No word on release date though we expect it to pop with the rest of the Latitude E-series in Q4.

This cool but,,,
//off topic: I'm seeing a Microsoft Ad in Engadget... is it for real?
What happened? Am I in the... Twilight Zone?
what year is it?!!! WHAT YEAR AM I IN?!!

*cue twilight zone intro*
UnixSystemsEngineer @ Jul 30th 2008 11:13AM
You look at the ads?
Josh @ Jul 30th 2008 11:56AM
JA! and they have an Apple too - basically anyone with enough money, doesn't matter if they are rivals.
About the projector, "portable" is more for cellulars. And as you can read here, http://www.internetevolution.com/author.asp?section_id=526&doc_id=149846&f_src=flffour , pico projectors are already here - and getting better!
OneLove @ Jul 30th 2008 12:06PM
go away troll.
Romer @ Jul 30th 2008 6:03AM
Would like to see some proper specs on that, 0,5 kg seems quite heavy still.
Homeboy @ Jul 30th 2008 7:08AM
That's what she said.
KilgoreTrout @ Jul 30th 2008 7:03AM
An 1/2 kilo beamer, if it provides the right effect ( or "experience" as marketeers like to say) is definitely not "quite heavy".
Remember that even if "portable" this is still a projector: you're not gonna use it on a plane or on a park's bench.

I wonder what makes it this heavy, the only parts i can imagine are the lenses, battery and perphaps some form of cooling, but since it's a LED a lot less cooling is needed right?
You could use it on a plane (and annoy the @#$t out of your fellow passengers).
lowdef @ Jul 30th 2008 8:57AM
so 1.1 pounds for a projector is heavy for you? damn i'd stay out of the gym too if i were you the smallest weights they got are 2 WHOLE LBS!!!
Romer @ Jul 30th 2008 9:10AM
0,5 Kg just does not sound portable enough to me, figure I could lift it if I wasn't a paraplegic since the guys from the gym kicked the life out me for calling them 'gay'.
The Joker @ Jul 30th 2008 10:01AM
This is an unfortunate name for these devices.
I keep thinking of Andrew Dice Clay grabbing his crotch and saying "I got yer 'pocket projector' right here baby. OHHHHHHH"
fgpx78 @ Jul 30th 2008 7:12AM
Could it be the Cup big as a projector instead? :D

Is it battery operated?
Kilgore: If the in-flight movie sucks you could share your downloaded movies with your fellow passengers. I'm bringing a few seasons of Seinfeld on my next flight. It would definitively rock the socks of any Vince Vaughn movie.

I love lamp.
...i don't love bulb.
霽月瀛台 @ Jul 30th 2008 7:53AM
What is the difference between lamp and bulb?
Is LED a kind of bulb?
I expect when you say it is green, you mean there is solar panel on this tiny device.
me @ Jul 30th 2008 9:30AM
The LED operates with a lower amount of heat and takes less electricity. Though more expensive than traditional bulbs, generally speaking, Dell picked the better of the two for their projector.
Bradley @ Jul 30th 2008 8:07AM
It's cute! But I'd rather have one in my phone.
Xenoterranos @ Jul 30th 2008 8:14AM
No way that mug is Texas sized. You could drink a liquefied infant out of the mugs down here.
:D
Tim @ Jul 30th 2008 8:22AM
Pocket Projector . . . The 21st century Pocket Protector. Carry your own to ensure nerd status.
teecas @ Jul 30th 2008 8:42AM
That's a huge mug!
d @ Jul 30th 2008 9:10AM
I would love one of these. I bring my MacBook to school often with a Keynote (Keynote - v. Powerpoint with better transitions) loaded on, yet there's never a projector. It will be available separately, right?
UnixSystemsEngineer @ Jul 30th 2008 11:15AM
I try so hard not to be a smartass, but..
.. why wouldn't it be available separately? What are they gonna do, bundle it with a PowerEdge server?
kal326 @ Jul 30th 2008 9:21AM
That is either a tiny projector, or a really big D cup. Besides, I don't think even in Texas they would go with anything bigger. The risk of some long term wrist injury is just too high.
phrank @ Jul 30th 2008 11:13AM
Hmmm, is there a chance in hell smaller size equates to any bit of a lower cost? I'm *assuming* not, but I dunno.
I could also hope that the lack of a bulb means you don't have to replace it, which is maybe the biggest thing that's kept me from wanting to get one.
Matt Hoult @ Jul 30th 2008 1:25PM
That looks pretty cool, can't believe I missed it after poking around all those slides! Still, the res. looks like it will be pretty small.
Tdburn @ Jul 30th 2008 4:22PM
These new Mini projectors are so cool. I wonder about the size of the projected image. On the other led projectors that I've seen they project something like a 20" image. Which is a good start but how big can they get in the future?
Benson @ Jul 31st 2008 3:41PM
Hmm...This + USB-VGA + N800 = uberbad.
I want. Bad.
luckeycat @ Aug 17th 2008 1:07AM

Just found the little guy on the Dell Canada web site. No picture or info but a price of $440.00.
