Kodak's $180 Zi6 HD pocket video camera up for pre-order

There's still a great chance that this thing will completely underwhelm, but those willing to give it a shot without reading so much as a single review can now secure their place in line. For $179.95, to-be owners can pre-order Kodak's Zi6 HD pocket video camera in either pink or black, but there's no mention of how soon it'll ship. Anyone taking the plunge (and willing to admit it)?

This woulda been a good chance for YOUTUBE to start marketing products. They could sell a camcorder that specificaly converts directly to its upload format and offers high quality for that format. Slap "Youtube" on it and ship em out.

It's not marketed by YouTube - but it does have a setting to automatically upload to YouTube. There was a CNET first look review of the camera. They said it is HD "resolution" but not HD quality like you would imagine. And what would you expect for $180????? Perfection, I think not.

The review said it is a better version of the Flip.

Yes it does record in HD - if you define HD as 720p resolution. Most of you are thinking 1080p is HD.

Im more for the old CVS video camera, hacked of course. The quality isnt the best but theres nothing like spending 20$ and making it your own as opposed to 180 and it coming in pink.

Let me be the first to say that this is a bunch of over-hyped crap. A video camera that small could never produce anything that looks remotely close to "HD." It's just like the camera market. A 12MP point-and-shoot is crap compared to the Nikon D2H (a 4MP camera). The 4 megapixels are simply much, much higher quality than the 12 megapixels.

Also, check the manufacturer: Kodak. Kodak is famous for one thing -- cheap cameras that are easy to use. This camcorder will probably produce video of lesser quality than most of the "Standard definition" cameras on the market.

I'm not trying to be negative; just realistic.

Kodak for your information has been making some killer cameras for the last few years. I own Canon, Panasonic, Casio and a Sony just name a few, Im a camera junkie.
My Kodaks always have the BEST picture quality,, and yes, even better than the Canon.
I also own a few small camcorders, the Flip Ultra and the Flip Mino and for the small size they are they put out some pretty good video.
I have played the video from my Aiptek A-HD 720p camera on my 60" Pioneer plasma and it looks really good, and thats only at 30fps.
Sorry, I dont think the Kodak Zi6 is going to be crap at all.

Totally agree with you Davyo. They really produced some good stuff out there. What a lot of people do not realise is the fact that Kodak actually invented the digicam. Produced the camera and is the leading producer of imaging sensors that is in more than 60 percent of all digicameras produced !!!!!! A highly unlikely situation if the quality was so crap...dont you think?

I think the people over at Gizmodo have used it briefly and have kind of a "first impression" review. The writer thought it produced "impressive" looking video for what it is.

I am interested. I have a Casio Exlim camera that does video of DVDish quality... it is 100 times better than what my $800 JVC camcorder did, and it was only $180

Plus... I never carried around my larger than pocket size camcorder so I never got quick meaningful shots (of the kids)

It's not going to produce fantastic quality but In my use of one... I can't watch what I don't capture.

I own more than a few Kodak camera's and they most of the time beat out my Canon, Sony, Panasonic and Casio camera's when comparing picture quality.

Perhaps you could let us know which model numbers of Kodak's you have personaly owned and why you did not like them ????

Let me tell U and got to play with this Kodak Zi6, being I work in the industry in NYC.

With proper natural sunlight and a steady hand it takes great Geniue 'Progressive' 720 Video ! (60 frames)

It is funny to see the writer of Engaget calling it shoddy Video quality, when HE NEVER has used it !

He is a JOKE !

All u have to do is record in natural sunlight with the Kodak M1033 Camera 720p 30 frames (currently available) you can see right away it captures more Natural detail and look less like like cjoppy Video (interlaced) from a Strandard Video Camcorder.

This is no Aiptec or Flip.

For less then $200, if you try it in Best Buy when it is released u shall see how Great it looks to computer
upload.
A true HD Broadcast HD Progressive Video camera is not a $3k Sony Prosumer (inlcuding a fake 1080p one)
but a 50k from JVC or Sony.



Remember the new Full Frame Sony (900) coming out Q4 is made by none other then KODAK !
