When it was
revealed, the appropriately titled Mini netbook looked like a toy next to a 17-inch Fujitsu Siemens Amilo notebook. That short video
we saw managed to prove it was indeed the real thing, and now we have some official specs to go with the two-tone looks. The 8.9-inch Amilo Mini Ui 3520 will retail for €399 ($588), and come equipped with a trendy 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 60- or 80GB hard drive (no SSD on offer), and the usual accoutrements: 1.3 megapixel webcam, Bluetooth, 802.11b/g, and a copy of XP Home Edition. No mention of battery size or life, but with a weight of just 2.2lbs we're guessing a wee 3-cell, which means no coast-to-coast flight duty for this one.
UPDATE: That's the Atom N270, not 320 processor. Thanks, Steph-Chan!
They should have called it Amino instead of Amilo. Then everyone would associate it with the components that make up proteins, and think it's strong and even moar better than the competition.
:)
(Cant keep up) I think its time for a full netbook comparison sheet. Anyone got a link?
looks ugly I think, and the bezel is huge...
Its not ugly, your eyes need to be checked.
Best design ever.
The bezel transforms this netbook into mini-tower.
Why put the tackpad buttons on the left and right? Come on people, don't you realized we HATE that?
it saves space. the acer aspire one does the same. you get used to it. if you cant handle one small change, you probably shouldnt be looking into something this small anyway.
Well the acer one supposedly has extra sensors in the corners of the touchpad and users say that with them they don't even use the side buttons that often, I wonder if this one has similar as well.
@Angus:
So does the HP Mininote. It's a nice design.
If you want to save space, put both buttons on the lefthand side of the pad (L button above R). That layout would actually be more ergonomic than the bottom layout, as most use the thumb to press the buttons.
To make it fair for righties & lefties, replicate the buttons on both sides of the pad.
Well, it has an ExpressCard slot, which is kinda new for netbooks, or am i missing something?

Bye
Johannes
Can XP pro be installed on these? Would make for great loaner laptops for businesses if they could be domained
The main difference between Home and Pro are very little. Some underlying networking changes, the addition of IIS services, etc. If it can run Home it should run Pro easily, just take up a little more memory for those new services.
Ugh. Everybody should stop making netbooks now that hasn't already made one. The only people who should sell netbooks are ASUS and MSI. This is so annoying at this point. They get to expensive to be secondary and too small and weak to be a main computer. Lame.
Yes, I agree! The prices are too high, so no more competition dammit!!
I actually quite like the look of this. I'm loving the fact that more and more companies are churning out more netbooks. MORE CHOICE FOR THE CONSUMER!!!!!!!!
It comes with the Atom N270 not the Atom 320.
I dig the lines on the bezel that sort of say, "This is the size your screen could have been."
I'm incredibly happy about this release. I've wanted a diminutive F-S ever since the Lifebook P1000 series. Granted this is no P1620; but it is already far more powerful than their old P1000s. My favorite thing about the entire Netbook craze is that it put FS-sized laptops within my purchasing power. To see FS release one now makes me think this saga has come full-circle.
Also, ExpressCard slot. Weeeee.
It'll last on a coast to coast flight if you're flying on Virgin America!
What an nice looking Laptop, with respect, I hope that Siemens have sorted out the Over heating Battery issue, which seems to ´´Haunt´´ may of their Laptops I have purchased in the past.
I will certainly be purchasing one of these myself,
Well done Siemens!
If this is Ugly, then you must be ´´Stuning!´´ Best regards, David.
I don't how to stune, but I would like to try.
A little too pricey for a netbook but this definitely has everything I want in a netbook. Bluetooth, express card reader,1GB of ram
It's missing a few standard features;
# I want one in 10 inch
# when it has at least a 6cell battery
# minimal of 3 usb ports
The Asus has all this but doesn't have the looks and shows some problems with the keyboard so I'm waiting for another good Netbook.
