Looks like that Apple event for the Tuesday, the 9th of this month is on. We know it'll be new iPods (they always do iPods for the fall / holidays), but hopefully they'll have a little something special for us. Whatever, just as long as it's not that round, awful looking nano. Go on, hit the comments and get speculating.
If I remember correctly, they removed the Firewire spec from the iPhone 3G, so you can't recharge it from those docks... correct me if I'm wrong though, since I know some Apple fanboy no doubt will.
My speculation: no matter what Apple announces, the Engadget comments section will be overrun by Winbots and Redmond astroturfers ranting about Apple fanboys, how crappy iPods are, and how the "awesome" Zune is the obvious choice for the counter-culture rebel.
@ Staff Ever hear of Android? Linux based!!!!!!! It can have almost anything you want without Apple to hold you back. Same with the Open Moko Freerunner, totaly open and complete freedom, not restricted by Apple. You can change whatever you want to, probably hack it to run TF2 if you had the time and skill.
I love these pointless speculative posts! If 32GB exists then 64GB must be next, right, but that would mean that it would require 2x32GB MicroSD size chips. They are about $350 each retail. Surely Apple could get them cheaper but Apple won't sell them for cheaper. The next thing I'd expect to hear is that you can buy a 128GB Flash drive for $500, which you can, but that is a 2.5" drive, which isn't going to work for the Touch. Unless Apple decides to use more than 2 chips for storage, or use a 32GB and 16GB in each bay, don't expect a Touch 32GB. It looks like only the Nano will be getting any real changes this time around, with the others getting a price drop.
Why? I bought one in June and I love it. The only bummer (for me anyway,) is that it doesn't have the graphics horsepower to run some of the steam Games. But as a desktop for basic tasks like email, web surfing, movies, and even vmware! it's great.
Would be great if Mac mini would be priced at 299-399 bucks like Eee Box. I would for sure buy one. But this is an iPod event, and I think Apple is gonna seperate Mac and iPod updates in.. yeaah seperate events.
Just one more thing: Toshiba is probably announcing a new 1,8" HDD with 200 GB capacitity, which will lead to new iPod classics.
hook up a mini to your hdtv, and run plex on it, as well as pureftpd and dyndns for a 'static' ip and ftp access. vine server for vnc connections on the go, and a couple external usb drives to hold all of your data (ripped movies with handbrake) makes your data accessible from anywhere, and phenomenally well run when at the house.
splurge and get an elgato eyetv and hook that up as well, and you've got your dvr incorporated.
Mac Minis rule for a small, easy to use media center and sure-the-hell beats any Win PC! Where have you been? I have a pc laptop and my mini is far superior as a media extender, especially with an extra 1TB external next to it.
and NO, not a fanboy, I'm just saying your comment has no merit or you haven't tried a mac mini for this.
so is it *so* obvious this is a presentation of new, slightly different, shiny plastic overpriced garbage at an event thinly veiled as some kind of community get together that it's not even cool to point it out anymore? i guess the fanboys are at a point where it's like "we KNOW it's the same device, leave us be"
Yep, I'd say music subscription service too. I just hope they don't price it too much over the current Rhapsody packages. $10 - $15 / month is about right IMHO
I agree. Overall, I want GPS, Camera, Bluetooth, and Speakers at least. A microphone would be nice too (or maybe Flash support for the browser - touch and iPhone). These things are keeping me from buying a touch; also the fact that I have a big music/movies, etc. collection, and need at least the 32GB one. Also, I want a new Shuffle and an updated or killed mac mini. Apple can do it...
Ryan, it sounds like you want an iPhone...GPS, speakers, mic......heck an iphone is even less than a touch. Yes yes you have the contract but even still even a year later they are the same price and you have more functionality.
so i just bought an 8GB ipod touch 2 days ago.. should i return it and see what the new models will have?
it's just going to be size differences, i'll probably pass.. but they're going to throw in something like, gps or a camera for the touch, then maybe it's worth waiting?
Their going to drop the price of the Touch. No doubt. Given the fact that the iPhone is only $199 now....a Touch at $299 is CRAZY. Yeah, sure, provider discounted and all...but still.
I thought retailers weren't being replenished with new 8GB Touch's? Perhaps the 16GB is the new 8GB and their will be a price reduction to boot.
In either case, return it and wait till next Tuesday. It's only a week!!
Keep it, you have two weeks and if something new comes out they'll let you return it for the new one of equal monetary value or give you a discount/credit back on the one you've already purchased. Enjoy now, then get a new one next week if new ones come out.
The reason the 8Gb iPhone is $199 and cheaper than the 8Gb Touch at $299 is the phone subsidy. You get to pay AT&T at least another $1000 for the privilege over the next two years. The Touch will come down in price but not much and it will never be cheaper than the iPhone (except the unsubsidized price). Might have some added features though.
They won't announce an iPod Touch that has GPS, camera, and speakers. It would cannibalize their iPhone sales. Sure Apple isn't smart sometimes, but really, it's common since. Try and sell the most expensive product (monthly at least).
New iPods are a given. Would love to see EOL on the Mini and the Apple TV reborn (with Safari, Email and PVR abilities.....) it would then be perfect!!
speaking of cameras....i hope they update my QuickTake 100....cause I keep hearing something about a new measure of camera capacity called megapixels....it would be amazing to have like 1.3 megapixels in a new Apple digicam
Interesting that there are no clues in the invite to the actual new iPods (such as the jeans pocket pic for the original Nano.) I mean it's obviously an iPod event, but we all knew that.
steve jobs will announce that a new era has started , the time of peace has begun , then all of a sudden bill gates walks to the podium and hugs steve , announcements will be the following : zunepod classic , zunepod nano , zunepod shuffle , zunepod touch , a new operating system will be launched , OS XX will come out and will be compatible with all hardware , and finally they put steve ballmer on the stage for free tomato throwing , anyone who hits his balls gets a free zunepod
I'm hoping they release a nano as small as the nanos from 2 generations ago, slim - nice fit in your hand but with an increase in storage - e.g. 16 GB.
New products are all well and good, but I just hope they release an update for the iPhone... I like my iPhone but if the keyboard lag, apps not installing correctly, etc, etc, are not corrected soon I will be looking for another phone.
Do YOU even own an iPhone? How about checking out macrumors or even Apple's support website, there are plenty of people having problems with their iPhones and the 2.0 software (including updates). 1.1.4 was the best software revision they've released, PERIOD. I'm well aware of the capabilities of the iPhone AS WELL AS the limitations. What's the point of you spewing all of this information?
I still have keyboard lag in the SMS app which is my main gripe, Apps randomly crash not as often as when 2.0 was first released but it still does it,
You sound like a true fan boy, save it for someone who cares.
Obviously you don't own an iPhone as you're posting the obvious iPhone fanboy cliche's.
I'm an iPhone 2.0.2 owner and the text input lag is most defiantly still there. Its ridiculous that Apple have managed to release 2 patches for it, both claiming to fix but issue but have done nothing. In fact its pretty ridiculous that they managed to release a software update that made the phone significantly worse to use in a number of places.
I'm not going to even bother ripping through your supposed list of reasons the iPhone is superior as each is more stupid than the last.
Seriously, the 2.0 firmwares (all of them so far) have been terrible. I have an iPhone 3G, and I had a 1st gen iPhone as well. The 1.X firmwares were rock solid. Applications don't even run in the background, so I don't see how this could be blamed on 3rd party code. This is Apple's fault.
I'm hoping new iPod touches are indicative of a firmware upgrade. Apple removed the push service from the latest betas of 2.1, so I'm hoping they release the bug fixes as 2.0.3 on the 9th, then add the push service for 2.1 towards the end of the month, and the new iPod touches will ship then.
Problems I have had so far with 2.0.2: keyboard lag, random safari crashes, clock and calculator have crashed on me, most other apps stop working randomly and my music gets wiped out every week almost...I have done 3 restores so far in less than a month of owning the phone.
I love the phone and its amazing...when it works. So I am really hoping for 2.1 to fix bugs more than introduce new features with potentially more bugs....
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
First to what, fail? You didn't even come in first for that, dolt
New iPod Boombox cause it was so damn popular!
glass touchpaded macbook pros!
Why must you reply to the first comment to get on top?
lol its what i do sometimes!
I'd actually like that. I've been trying to find an iPod HiFi, but they don't charge the iPhone 3G for some reason.
What are you guys talking about???
If I remember correctly, they removed the Firewire spec from the iPhone 3G, so you can't recharge it from those docks... correct me if I'm wrong though, since I know some Apple fanboy no doubt will.
Someone will correct if you're wrong, not because they're a fanboy haha.
Maybe this is just speculation but the ipod in his hand in oddly longer than it is wide.
@Engadget staff.
You suck
does anyone think that Apple might announce that they are going to take the iPhone out of Alpha testing ?
everyone complains sooooo muuuchhh about Apple. why does Apple have such a bad name ? why do people buy Apple stuff when Apple has such a bad name.
the corners are round.. it's definitely the ipod we saw before!!! =D
I just hope they release the new macbooks, as well
Cool, I am a counter-culture rebel apparently.
Apple have announced that they will be releasing a press release about an announcement regarding and the event where an announcement will be made.
64GB touch for £299
New nano(like we didn't already know) and Zune intergration on iTunes
I was kidding! Fanboy
I love these pointless speculative posts! If 32GB exists then 64GB must be next, right, but that would mean that it would require 2x32GB MicroSD size chips. They are about $350 each retail. oops, "...don't expect [anything larger than] a Touch 32GB..."
"zune has a measly 2 million users, why even bother?"
even if one sold they should have reason to add zune support
Because those 2 millions users are using Windows PCs, if they made iTunes Zune compatible then thats 2 million potential Mac buyers
Get the hell off these boards you fucking fanboy
LOL that troll got banned this has made my day!!! xD
Why do you zune-people (e.g., SirPasta117) always sound so angry?!
i thought MS locked the Zune to WMP...
that said it'd be great if El Steve were to convince 'em to open the player up to other media players but don't see that happening ever
@roole:
>Why do you zune-people (e.g., SirPasta117) always sound so angry?!
Because tattoos hurt.
what i don't want to see are anymore mac minis..........they need to EOL that one
Why? I bought one in June and I love it. The only bummer (for me anyway,) is that it doesn't have the graphics horsepower to run some of the steam Games. But as a desktop for basic tasks like email, web surfing, movies, and even vmware! it's great.
the mini is a fantastic little box. could use a bit of a price drop.
Disagree. However, Apple does need to do something with the Mini. It either needs to be brought up-to-date or killed off.
Nah, they need to drop the price and bump up the specs. Minis rock! they just need to be a bit cheaper.
hook up a mini to your hdtv, and run plex on it, as well as pureftpd and dyndns for a 'static' ip and ftp access. vine server for vnc connections on the go, and a couple external usb drives to hold all of your data (ripped movies with handbrake) makes your data accessible from anywhere, and phenomenally well run when at the house.
splurge and get an elgato eyetv and hook that up as well, and you've got your dvr incorporated.
you'll not be thinking it sucks for very long.
^^^^ Holy Moly! ^^^^
Look at all those highest ranks!
If they throw HDMI on a Mac Mini and give it enough power to decode 1080p from Front Row, I'll buy one yesterday.
Too bad the screengrab isnt from the new taller screened nano...
That and whatever dolt Photoshopped that didn't get the reflections right. Look at the triangle behind the bottom foot, vs the reflection.
Woohooo, I've been waiting for this announcments
new MacBooks i think.
Looks like a purely iPod and iTunes event from the image. But there might be a Macbook refresh on the Apple homepage.
will announce new macbooks, not on sale for another week.
so is it *so* obvious this is a presentation of new, slightly different, shiny plastic overpriced garbage at an event thinly veiled as some kind of community get together that it's not even cool to point it out anymore? i guess the fanboys are at a point where it's like "we KNOW it's the same device, leave us be"
low rank your hearts out.
dude i really hope new macbook.....that would be great!
Subscription service!
Yep, I'd say music subscription service too.
I just hope they don't price it too much over the current Rhapsody packages.
$10 - $15 / month is about right IMHO
Looks like the subscription price may be as much as 2 dollars a day. I have heard rumor of $60/month O.O
More like First to write First wrong. You Fail at life.
Common Apple, I need a Macbook Pro! PLZ UPDATE!!!!11
YES PLEASE. Been waiting to buy one. Just waiting for them to update.
me too, I'm really hoping for a Macbook Pro update. I'll definitely be tuned into Engadget to get the latest info come Tuesday!
Ipod touch with built in sd slot for 99
iPod Touch with GPS and Speakers!!!!!! You can do it Apple.
I'd love a camera, microphone and speaker, just like the iPhone.
Hell I'd settle for a camera and some sort of headset adapter similar to the PSP that works on the Touch.
"All you can eat" iTunes subscription for $19.99 a month? No wait, that's not speculation, that's delusion on my part. Sorry.
If they include movie and TV show rentals in that price, I'm sold!
Finally! (How can they hide an event like that all this time?)
Looking at potential MacBook update are we?
so i just bought an 8GB ipod touch 2 days ago.. should i return it and see what the new models will have?
it's just going to be size differences, i'll probably pass.. but they're going to throw in something like, gps or a camera for the touch, then maybe it's worth waiting?
It will cost more than what you bought anyways...but if you have to have to latest and greatest....return that thing now!
Dude...return it NOW.
Their going to drop the price of the Touch. No doubt. Given the fact that the iPhone is only $199 now....a Touch at $299 is CRAZY. Yeah, sure, provider discounted and all...but still.

Hes got a new Nano in his hand.
Don't think so. Looks like a Zune 120.
Bring back Appleworks!!!!!!
....what??
No, MacPaint!!!! or hell, even better Superpaint!!! LOL
I had an SE (not SE30) that had Superpaint on it and thought it was the shiz, on a black and while monitor!! LOLOL
So new iPods?
i used my nokia N95 to scan that bar code, how cool. I wish in the usa we could switch to that system its really nice
- Iphone and ipod touch v2.1
- Itunes 8.0 with video encoding and more "media server" features
- Macbook(pro) with touchscreen and/or dual screen
You just stole everything Kevin Rose said and posted it without any credit, which is something Kevin Rose does a lot.
In that picture it certainly looks like the rumoured new nano
I think the iPod in the picture is way too large to be a Nano, looks like a regular Classic-sized iPod...
New iPods are a given. Would love to see EOL on the Mini and the Apple TV reborn (with Safari, Email and PVR abilities.....) it would then be perfect!!
A camera on the Touch. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.....
speaking of cameras....i hope they update my QuickTake 100....cause I keep hearing something about a new measure of camera capacity called megapixels....it would be amazing to have like 1.3 megapixels in a new Apple digicam
Was that a terrible attempt at sarcasm?
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Interesting that there are no clues in the invite to the actual new iPods (such as the jeans pocket pic for the original Nano.) I mean it's obviously an iPod event, but we all knew that.
iphone firmware 2.1!

I like your predictions... seems plausible to me.
Yeah, and OS XXX after that "preloaded with 500GB of p0rn. Mac - made for work"
Apple will endorse Obama and bring back their Think Different ad campaign.
I'm hoping they release a nano as small as the nanos from 2 generations ago, slim - nice fit in your hand but with an increase in storage - e.g. 16 GB.
Also if they don't already have it built in stereo bluetooth - which can be turned on and off to conserve battery power.
I think I just came in my pants...
No new systems.
For the decent price of $300, an extra-thin 80GB iPod Touch, with GPS, 3G browsing and phone capabilities.
What?... no? Oh well, a guy can dream, can't he?
Anything special changes to the Touch would make me happy. Changes to the price would make me even happier,
haha...love your avatar!
I want to see an ipod touch with the iphone s got
With the same thickness too? No thanks for me.
New products are all well and good, but I just hope they release an update for the iPhone... I like my iPhone but if the keyboard lag, apps not installing correctly, etc, etc, are not corrected soon I will be looking for another phone.
