Sony pushes out firmware 5.0 for PSP
"Soon-ish" has turned to "now-ish." PSP owners eager to get their minds into the PlayStation Network (and thus, the PS Store) right on their handheld can now do so... right after they suck down the freshly released firmware 5.0, of course. Aside from the obvious changes, the PlayStation format software can now be output in full-screen size on a connected device, the sleep timer feature can now be used under [Music], the system automatically reverts to USB mode when a USB cable is connected and the [Original] theme has been redesigned. Get it while the gettin's good.

I can't wait to get my hands on this. I am booting up my PSP as we speak to get the new update. The full size output is worth the weight alone.

You make it sound like they have a lot of fiber in their diet.
@gLô @ Oct 15th 2008 11:16AM

I honestly wouldn't care all too much if he took his time... but with this new auto USB thing, that REALLY helps with how much I use my PSP as a music/video/storage device...
I'm sure someone could cook up some homebrew that does the same thing- but having it come direct from Sony ensures it's perfection. Not worth leaving CFW though.

I like the sound of the automatic USB mode. Switching back and fourth is a pain in the butt. I hope dark-alex gets moving on this and can figure out the new hash code verification problem.
If you don't understand the current hurdle, check this out.

This is a very exciting time for portable "gaming" devices. I see the PSN store as an answer back to Apple's throwing down the gauntlet about it's device (iPod Touch) being the "Funnest iPod ever". Now the iPhone platform isn't the only game in town capable of downloading games over wifi. I even noticed several of the games on the PSN are agressively priced. This just might be a tasty enough worm for you to take a bite on Sony's hook versus Apple's.

PSP has been able to download games ever since it got a web browser. Granted they were only demos but still
Jeremy @ Oct 15th 2008 12:51PM
still no divx without custom firmware...
htd @ Oct 15th 2008 1:26PM
as far as I know, the custom divx solution is rather half cooked. a chinese mp4 is a better solution for divx/xvid/rmvb, IMHO, I am using ainol v2000se
sfotoord @ Oct 15th 2008 12:52PM
Any idea where I can download this to my PC w/o using my PSP wifi?

Being released for almost four years ago PSP has managed to keep it's value pretty nicely. I mean Sony is still working to put up new features and even though the games are not that good compared to modern consoles they're certainly more playable than most of the iPod/iPhone or cellphone games. PSP is definately my choice on that long bus trip to where ever our next football game is.
andy @ Oct 15th 2008 2:37PM
