It's been awhile (or a long while, in the case of the
ARES CG6155) since we've heard about these machines, but ASUS has at long last decided to start shipping 'em to retailers. The aforesaid gaming desktop still doesn't have a publicly available price tag, but ASUS assures us that it's out there now for those who know where to look. Thankfully, it was a bit (and we stress "bit") more forthcoming with details on the
G50 and G71 gaming notebooks, which are also available as we speak for $1,249.99 and take-your-best-guess, respectively.

Better than the mac's I must say. I will buy this because it has a non glass screen! I am sold.

US $1249.. Wooow!! Thats pretty steep. A notebook inclusive of Apple Tax costs that much!!
xB Owner @ Oct 22nd 2008 11:44AM
Not steep at all when you consider the specs and capabilities of the notebook (G50). Though I do think they completely copped out on the screen resolution. I would gladly spend a few more bucks for 1680x1050. If it weren't so bulky, this would be a front runner in my laptop selection.

Gaming Laptop huh?
If it can run Crysis on VERY HIGH, then and only then does it pass the test.

Wow! a legitimate "does it play crisis" comment!

Asus is not apple or even hp
meaning they don't use a lot prioritary components
i have an hp laptop with nvidia chiset and graphics nividia doesn't support it becuz it was a chip set develop for hp and hp exclusively so hp has to support it and they don't hardly every
but i do have asus laptop as wel with nividia chip in
and i never been to asus web sight to update my driver i just get them right from nivida the same with network card the intel chipset and wirless card
the same is also true for my sony laptop
i am willing to bet u could the same
gaforces @ Oct 22nd 2008 11:57AM
Asus doesn't update their drivers very often. If you want to use your laptop for gaming and you need updated video drivers, stay away from ASUS.
The newest driver they offer for my M51's 9500M GS is from 6/2007.
apu95 @ Oct 22nd 2008 3:17PM
Why would you use the drivers from ASUS' site? Go to laptopvideo2go.com and find updated ones ;). I have an M50SV-B1 and I updated my 9500GS drivers to the latest ones with PhysX included too =D
gaforces @ Oct 22nd 2008 4:21PM
Because every time I download em and try to install, the installer says my card is not supported.
Tangerined @ Oct 23rd 2008 9:38PM
Because you're not reading the directions... you have to download the modified .inf file that they provide to replace the one that comes with the drivers

No pink? Aww...
MyHeadisFed @ Oct 22nd 2008 12:32PM
The G50 has been out for a while....
zshift @ Oct 22nd 2008 1:24PM
yeah, the original g50 has been selling at best buy since near the end of summer...
this is just a refresh.
the originals were G50V laptops, current ones are G50Vt
also, as noted below, the one at best buy has a 9800m gs with 1gb dedicated ddr3...for the same price.
thats a hell of a gpu in there. also comes with the p8400, 320gb hdd (specs say 7200rpm, but im not entirely sure) and 4 gb ddr2
also, most people dont know this but these laptops have a second hdd bay built and and the bios supports raid 1/raid 0 when a second hdd is detected. for 1249 USD this is a great laptop.
only warning: i had the g50v, and that got VERY hot, so i wouldn't use it as a "lap"top, more like a mobile desktop.
heres the new one : http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9050279&st=asus&lp=4&type=product&cp=1&id=1218012519873
old one is still available at stores for same price (for now) but only has a 1.8GHz, 667 fsb processor (forgot model number) + a 9600 gpu
the G50Vt is a GREAT laptop for the price, just try to match specs with any other brand and dream for this price.
Coolbee8 @ Oct 22nd 2008 12:37PM
Bestbuy offers the same thing with 9800m Gs at same price, whole 32 extra sps.

PCcyber has one running a crysis demo. Low-Med to run relatively smooth :S

What GPU does the G70/G71 use?
Almighty- @ Oct 22nd 2008 4:03PM
nVidia 9700GT M I have the G71V allready for about 1 month ;)
I play games nicely @1920x1200 and the FullHD screen is lovely!
Mark @ Oct 22nd 2008 11:55PM
ASUS have a model named G50 as well?
There is an unlimited amount of letter-number combinations out there, why do ASUS and TOSHIBA have to make it so damn complicated?
