Soken shows off mostly ugly wall of e-ink in Japan
Thus far, we've seen OLED rule the FDP International floor in Japan, but now we've got one more emerging display technology showing off its merits: e-ink. Soken Chemical & Engineering Company demonstrated a wall of 30- x 30-centimeter e-ink paper displays in order to showcase just what the technology was capable of. Quite honestly, we're still struggling to see just what that is. Practicality aside, it's still pretty fascinating to think that all of the colors you see above are being emitted from ultrathin displays, though the choice of pattern is questionable at best.

Who needs paint or wallpaper? Just apply sheets of e-ink! Imagine the fun possibilities!
"Honey, I think we should make the room red."
"You know how to use the controls."

Thats an excellent idea actually , do the whole living room with it and some how coordinate it with the tv , like those ambient light tvs

And when you go over to a friend's house and they leave you alone in the room with the console unlocked we can set the wallpaper to something obscene!

anyone else think of a TNG reference in the title?

I think the point is that it can be a piece of tile... I don't understand why the whole display has to be so ugly though. I hope it is water proof if they put it in restrooms! Or, using both lasers, sensors, and computers, they can post messages in front of the urinal, "You missed!" (But in Japanese, of course.)
(Please. Don't mention Politics here. You guys got it out of your system in the other post, I hope!)

OBAMA! Awsome. Can't wait till Jan 20th. He will put us back on the map.

It only looks like the lettering is written in e-ink. The rest of the wall is just tile. Look at the top of the wall. Unless e-ink screens are now glossy, it's just wall tiles.
Ian @ Nov 5th 2008 1:43AM
Nevermind. Apparently it's all e-ink. I don't know why its only the coloured tiles that are glossy though. Who makes glossy screened e-ink screens?
DarkLight @ Nov 5th 2008 2:23AM
Just stick some glossy plastic infront of them. No big deal.
(Altough I'd have a question then: Why? Matte looks better)
Plothole @ Nov 5th 2008 3:15AM
The glossiness could possibly be a side-effect of the color filters. (*just a theory*)

Imagine an e-ink wall linked to some sort of camera.
The wall displays a ? box ala Super Mario Bros.
When you jump under the box... coins come out!
GLEE.

Looks like something out of Sonic the Hedgehog.

not all e-ink. look at the texturing on the glossy part. why would the darker sections of the display be raised? the dark squares are clearly raised....
