Toshiba's three-GPU Qosmio X305-Q708 / Q706 laptops now available
Given that you've surely got rafts of free cash to burn through right now, we know you're eager beyond belief to drop north of four large on a new gaming notebook. To that end, we're utterly thrilled to announce that Toshiba's Qosmio X305-Q708 (starts at $4,199, goes to just under infinity) is available for purchase direct from the company. If that just seems downright insane to you, the three-GPU X305-Q706 is also available now for "just" $1,999.99. The big ticket inclusion here? An NVIDIA GeForce 9400M paired with two GeForce 9800 GTS GPUs. Or, enough to make Crysis weep.

True story: Crytek programmed Crysis to have no tear ducts.
Darren Murph...Get your facts right!
I'm taking the last part of your article very seriously >:[
Techie @ Nov 6th 2008 12:07PM
My friend bought one but returned it because the cover is like pinkish and it's the bright kind. Ugliest laptop ever.
bobartig @ Nov 6th 2008 3:35PM
@Techie: It can have Hello Kitty and Hannah Montana baking cupcakes on it for all I care. If the thing can bring it at a LAN party, that's all that matters.
JohnTitor @ Nov 6th 2008 4:31PM
I've never seen a good locking laptop come out of Toshiba, even their utrathin and light R500 isn't really that good looking, and as far as I'm concerned most people only need as much as the $1400 Gateway FX for a gaming laptop, anyone with more cash should get a Sager, Qosmios are ugly ripoffs
htd @ Nov 6th 2008 11:47AM
this probably doubles as a foreman grill when put into 3 GPU mode...
gad get @ Nov 6th 2008 2:09PM
Too bad it lacks the style.
Kamokazi @ Nov 6th 2008 11:47AM
Horrific flame design aside, the low end GPU + high end GPU thing is actually quite brilliant....it should make this thing have a decent battery life when not gaming.
Ashwin @ Nov 6th 2008 11:59AM
But with the weight of this thing, its not like battery life is going to matter.
Kamokazi @ Nov 6th 2008 12:22PM
Just because it's heavy doesn't mean it can't still be portable.
Being an IT geek and gamer, I like having an overpowered 17" laptop. I've carried mine on several trips to our facilities in the Philippines and China, as well as other places, It's heavy, but it doesn't bother me that bad. The Swissgear backpack does help a lot, it's great at offsetting some of the weight. The biggest downside is there are plenty of airports and planes where you can't find a power outlet (or a free one) to keep the beast running more than 45 minutes. On trips with long layovers, I take a 12" with me too. The GPU is the major power hog in these things, as similar 17" laptops with low-end GPUs will often have 'decent' battery lives, by comparison.
maveric101 @ Nov 6th 2008 1:18PM
question: is this like what's in the new MBPs, meaning it's not hybrid SLI? or is it? and what notebooks are out that have hybrid SLI?
the tif @ Nov 6th 2008 11:47AM
How much extra is it to get rid of that fugly paintjob?
gad get @ Nov 6th 2008 2:10PM
The cost of a cheese grater.

Didn't know Elton John took charge of their computer design dept.

ROCKET MAAAAAAAAAN
Alex @ Nov 6th 2008 11:53AM
Ahh.. so it *can* play Crysis!
216 @ Nov 6th 2008 11:58AM
probably on medium settings
r3loaded @ Nov 6th 2008 12:38PM
High actually. At least. My friend's Qosmio X205 with dual 8600 GT can play it on high.
lgndk11r @ Nov 6th 2008 4:25PM
Correction:
Can Crysis play this?
Talon Trax @ Nov 6th 2008 11:53AM
Saw this yesterday at Best Buy. It is friggin' HUGE! It's a desktop-laptop because I cant imagine setting this on your lap for any length of time from either the weight OR the heat...
Prokanda @ Nov 6th 2008 11:58AM
you think the laptop is huge? you should see the power supply.
these things are beastly... shame too. nice specs. very accurate trackpad, subwoofer + 4 harmon/kardon speakers, very crisp screen... but when I set them up for customers.... it makes me cringe. the thing is fucking ugly.
happy_penguin @ Nov 6th 2008 2:46PM
You got that right. Hideously ugly. YUK!! :-o~~~~~~~~~8*
rock99rock @ Nov 6th 2008 11:57AM
3 gpu's? Where's the spoiler?
lowdef @ Nov 6th 2008 2:19PM
they thought it would look too tacky.
happy_penguin @ Nov 6th 2008 3:26PM
You look at the spoiler every time you use it.
kal326 @ Nov 6th 2008 11:58AM
"GeForce 9400M GPU + Two GeForce 9800 GTS GPUs = No Compromises" .... and no battery life.
kal326 @ Nov 6th 2008 11:59AM
Did you see the paint job?
kal326 @ Nov 6th 2008 12:03PM
That was meant for rock99rock....
Damn engadget comment system.

Todd @ Nov 6th 2008 12:10PM
"...enough to make Crysis weep."
Awesome specs, but why is it so tacky looking. Can't I get it in all black anodized aluminum, sans all the "Pimp My Lappy" nonsense?
mercurysunblast @ Nov 6th 2008 12:13PM
Ugh...in case companies haven't learned this already...
it's called: Simplicity.
This would have probably been a smash hit if it wasn't for the ridiculous design.
Thi mam(kris120890) @ Nov 6th 2008 12:19PM
Fantastic hardware just shame about the looks. Quite cheap though challenging the dell xps with newer hardware 9800 compared to the xps 8800 chips and the igp will help battery life but also giving good performance. Will this have the playstation 3 chip like other laptops from toshiba. And this will play crisis on high or very high i should think because the old 880 in the xps could.
Good new for apple people apple have just sent out emails telling us the mac mini will be upgraded and updated in a pending release.
http://www.techradar.com/news/computing/is-apple-to-launch-a-new-mac-mini--482672 It says Q1 2009 but i think soon since apple has stopped the manufacturing of mac minis. Only two people have had e-mails.

I keep reading Quasimodo, don't know why...
gad get @ Nov 6th 2008 2:12PM
Quasimodo's a terrible book!
Samboini @ Nov 6th 2008 1:18PM
Toshiba's keyboards suck! At least on the recent laptops i've experienced.
steffan @ Nov 6th 2008 1:38PM
YES, I can now walk around with a laptop that people will know for 100% that I'm a geek...and gay.
Chin-Poh @ Nov 6th 2008 1:56PM
You mean a geek......and a virgin. : )
So I'm gonna buy this! XD
xB Owner @ Nov 6th 2008 1:51PM
You would think that for $4k they could design in a modicum of style. Still one of the most hideous laptop designs in existence.
Air @ Nov 6th 2008 2:41PM
I really can't see any self-respecting gamer buying this. I wonder how well they sell? Probably a fair bit if Toshiba keep tossing this hideous design out...
lee @ Nov 6th 2008 2:42PM
Toshiba I love your stuff but change the FREAKIN COLOR!!!!. Nobody wants a $4100.00 Pink laptop!!!!
zshift @ Nov 6th 2008 2:45PM
man, you guys should stop by a best buy and actually see this thing in real life. Not only is it EXTREMELY inyourfacewowitsonFIRE..., but its like 4 inches or so thick and requires a custom built safe-messenger bag to carry it around. Even funnier, the display was stolen at one best buy, right off the shelf (WTF was every employee doing that day that they didn't see someone walking around with a GIANT, RED< FLAME-COVERED lapbox.....baffles the mind)
Liam Wolf @ Nov 6th 2008 11:13PM
The person that stole it was probably a geek squad employee, who thought it was real. We all know how "smart" those guy's are.
Coyote @ Nov 6th 2008 2:46PM
Well I can see I'm not alone in thinking this looks ridiculous. Come on Toshiba tone it down a little. Take a cue from Asus and maybe just have some track lighting and blinking side panels... err wait.
Richard Glitter @ Nov 6th 2008 3:22PM
Looks like it has one of the recalled batteries and is engulfed in flames!
Brazzle @ Nov 6th 2008 3:28PM
would really like one. just put one of them "sticky covers" on it.. the rest of the laptop looks great.
ClydeSeal @ Nov 6th 2008 5:09PM
doesnt it kinda defeat the pupose of buying a laptop if it that HUGE. I ma sure the fans in the thing could double as a hovercraft too
jake @ Nov 6th 2008 5:13PM
that is the most hideous thing I have ever seen!
Achille @ Nov 7th 2008 1:23AM
As a design student, I'd like to ask the Toshiba design team just one question.
WWWWWWWWWHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY ??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!
Zach @ Nov 7th 2008 2:13PM
I heard they just said "Batteries? Oh fock off!" in true Robin Williams style.
