MacBook innards crammed into makeshift mini Mac Pro tower
When we first laid eyes upon the slick box pictured above, we were struck with an eerie feeling of déjà vu. Now, it all makes sense. After receiving an all-but-completely-dead MacBook, one particular modder decided to rip the motherboard out, break out the soldering iron, throw in a few replacement parts and shove everything into a Macally G-S350SUA aluminum hard drive enclosure. Wanna know why? Because he had a peek at this -- a Mac Pro Mini mod that popped up here in March. Talk about taking inspiration and improving upon it.

me too. this kind of stuff is so cool. thank God for handy people like this.
yes, I realize I just pimped my game... that was part of the joke.
ya, it was completely related, but that does not mean you cant bring up something else.
it is absolutely cool and AOL encouraged.
Either the Apple fanboys got here and downranked everyone or Engadget doesn't like anti-apple comments.
What the hell happened?
Digg's bury brigade migrated to Engadget. :(
I'll join in on the fail-reply party here.
I'd take 100... in an xgrid cluster.
Does it come in black?
o nvm
I wonder.....
Will it blend???
I also wonder if it will blend although when I say "it" I mean YOU
leo=not funny
leo,
the kind of people who say things like that are the people that have watched the videos, thought, "hey, I wonder if my dick will blend!", and now are consistently haunted by the horrors of your own stupidity and insecurity. you're not funny douchebag, go stump fuck yourself
stump fuck was good
This whole thread is worthless.
yeah I know, I was just trying to put another of these "will it blend" / "can it play crysis" / "1st" idiots into their place and I GOT FLAMED - wtf?
I should've just left it alone, not associated myself with such garbage and let him get low ranked. Foolishly, many have tried to be ironic by posting "1st" on a day-old article - even used sarcasm tags and whatnot but the engadget commenters are a harsh bunch. Somtimes very funny, sometimes very knowledgeable - but always harsh.
I know engadget has heart attacks from the excitement of new Mac anything but I fail to see how this is an improvement.
If footprint/space is the major issue, you'd be doing much better with a imac.
Probably because they also get hard ons for DIY stuff.
Oh engadget don't you know that the term motherboard is totally beneath mac users. It's a "logic board".
Which is also what Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Gateway call their parts.
How insensitive. It's a "parent"board.
lol
Logic Board my ass.
flashpoint wants a spanking.
Dell call their motherboards "system boards"
Just to inform :)
And that's how the next-gen Mac Mini should look like!
And it should have more power! (IDK how powerful that one is)
I should attempt at one of those...
With a dell monitor
Mose people dont use Apple Cinema displays with their mini... ::)
Because they have low contrast ratio and are super expensive. Remember how Apple was criticized for charging extremely high prices for their 20-inch Cinema Display that had the same LG panel in it as the Dell UltraSharp 2005FPW. LOL!
Apple really need to rework their displays if they want anybody to buy them.
They need to be competitively priced and have more inputs. I love Apple's design and would love an ACD on my desk, but if it means not being able to use my PS3 and paying more, I'll keep my Dell 2407WFP-HC. There's so much Apple could do - like making the USB hub connect to the computer via WUSB, or adding an accelerometer for rotating the display.
@karl w
i'm pretty sure they just reworked there displays.
Um, just wondering but, do people ever stick the innards inside a modded monitor housing and make a iMac? That'd be cool...
AWWWW ITS SOOOOO CUTEE!!!! lol ... thats the only comment youll hear =]
Bless its heart!
it doesnt have an optical drive...sounds familiar...
That's because customers overwhelmingly favour the lack of an optical drive.
:P
It may be because optical drives are a bag of hurt.
You're all wrong. It's because the Segway is going to be as big a deal as the PC.
This isn't Vietnam...THERE ARE RULES!
Hmm. Pretty cool. Maybe when my old macbook stops doing it's job I'll give something like this a try.
Where the hell do I put my coffee cup?
was that necessary?
Sorry Samboni...I'll have to get your dad out of there first.
Feel better?
If you can fit him in there, I'm impressed. Chances are though, you're lieing.
Did you just tell us that you know and are proud of your father's penis size?
No. Think about it.
Now just make it 400 dollars cheaper (since it doesn't come with a screen like a macbook) and we have a deal
@digitallysick
Or stick an Intel mini-itx mobo in there (sorry "lobo" [logic board] didn't sound good;),
and you've got yourself a >$200 "Hackintosh" that LOOKS the part!
heh-heh... *ahem*
It's still a mac.
This is an awesome mod! I'd really like to see one of the new mac boards in their with the GeForce 9400m. Now that would be the most potent, yet compact htpc of all time.
Well, perhaps without the TV tuner part but I guess that's kind of optional these days anyway, seeing as how there are better places to get videos than OTA, and CableCard is a bag of hurt.
Looks nice from one side. What does the thing look like all around? Does the other side have tie straps sticking out?
This is a cool mod, I'd like to give it a try myself.
I totally want to do this once my MacBook craps out on me.
It looks nice. Perhaps Apple should take some notes for their upcoming mac mini refresh?
My thoughts exactly. I think people would flock to this if the MacMini looked like this. I would.
i'm curious to know how it handles the closed quarters, heating-wise.
Big whoop. Modders do all kinds of stuff. This is not that unique or special. Leave it to Engadget.com to show its fanboy colors.
Ok people are using the rating system alittle to much... All i saw when reading the comments was a bunch of grayed out comments because people feel the need to voice the fact that they HAD to hit the -... every single one of you is a DUMB@SS
imagine a beowulf cluster of these
Yeah i was going to mention that japanese mac mini mod, that was awesome.
I hope steve jobs is listening, we want novelty macs now!
(how about a mini macbook for a start?)
keep it under $700...
the case is a macally GS350SU external HDD enclosure. I have a few of these, they're nice.

Its.... adorable... O_O
Cool!
However, isn't the second core disabled and the first reduced to 1Ghz when the battery isn't connected? How'd you get round that?
Wow, now THAT is amazing. That is one cool looking mini MAC

this is cute.
Mac and design are synonymous - as usual sleek, stylish and cool!
