Canon EOS 5D Mark II spotted for sale in the wilds of Shanghai
It looks like that hint at a release date we got earlier this summer turned out to be right -- well, within a few weeks anyway. It's November and Canon's new 21 megapixel shooter, the EOS 5D Mark II, is now available. But, for the moment at least, it looks like you need to be a resident of China to pick up one for the local equivalent of $2,900 for the kit minus the lens (no word on what the full kit's going for). The picture above was taken at a Shanghai retailer, and while this particular hand model might prefer that you consider the A900 instead, those of you with duffels full of Canon glass would be well advised to get those credit card balances raised; this hot DSLR is sure to be dropping elsewhere in the world within the next few weeks.

Rephrase question
Do I want this camera from a person wearing a SONY jacket?
ao @ Nov 23rd 2008 1:08AM
if you can afford this thing, you can afford a roundtrip to shanghai
Bobby @ Nov 23rd 2008 9:17AM
this camera is available in many stores worldwide but not in USA, average price is for $3000 with 24-105 lenses
Looks like contrarian business model to one introduced by Apple iPhone.
loocas @ Nov 23rd 2008 9:29AM
@ ao
That doesn't make much sense. I can afford this camera, but I can't afford to spend 2 days on a trip to get one.
FedEx to the rescue!
brad77 @ Nov 23rd 2008 11:02PM
@ao: But can you afford both?
joe @ Nov 22nd 2008 9:40PM

That isn't an excuse; God gave us all an arsehole to call upon in these desperate times. Just grab your ankles and think of the paycheck.

It says "SOY" on his shirt...ha ha ha
yopladas @ Nov 22nd 2008 10:28PM
Why is a Sony guy holding a Cannon camera.... \o/
Will @ Nov 23rd 2008 8:53AM
Camera Stores typically sell more than one brand of Camera. And as you can see in the picture, they've got Nikon boxes in the background (right hand side)
Just because a Salesperson is wearing a Sony shirt doesn't mean they can't sell you Canon or Nikon gear.
ace587 @ Nov 22nd 2008 10:34PM
god i want that camera so bad

in china only? why is there an ad for one of these on the corner?
reuben @ Nov 23rd 2008 1:06AM
well this is better than the months-anticipated Nov. 22nd announcement by Nikon that turned out to be "Nikon fires 2600 thai employees due to lack of sales"...
espressoroast @ Nov 23rd 2008 4:14AM
I was trying to control my desire for this thing, but seeing it like that in a box, ready to be taken home, now I can't take my eyes off it.
Want.
Chibi @ Nov 23rd 2008 7:45AM
At least the kit lens is not something you will use for a day and throw in the recycle bin...
SBB @ Nov 23rd 2008 11:37AM
buys ticket to Shanghai too.

Bought mine in Geneva with the kit lens. It's available and not grey market.

" $2,900 for the kit minus the lens"
That's not a kit then, it's just a body.

I've been drooling over this for a while, but haven't been able to find one spec I'm curious about. The 1080p video is it 24, 30, or 60 fps? Anyone know?

I've been waiting around for this camera since Dec. of 2007, and went online for news, leaks and rumors atleast twice a week till September came. My favorite things about this camera are (in order of personal importance):
ISO: 50 to 25600 (realistically 3200 is max usability...maybe 6400 tops)
AF Micro Lens Adjustment for us to 20 Lenses
HD Video at 1080p at 30FPS plus I've heard there is/will be firmware update for 24FPS
21.1 Megapixel CMOS on the new DIGIC IV
Admittedly I'm not happy about the following:
9 AF Points in a small center cluster
4 FPS Burst Mode
In the end though, 5D Mark II is not the 1DS Mark III and hence does not necessarily need 45 AF points or 10 FPS burst mode (would have been nice though). The only times I really need both of these functions are when I shoot wildlife, so lets hope for a EOS 60D with atleast 6-7 FPS burst and at least 25 AF points with similar features to the 5D.
Well at this point I'm yammering on about my dreams and will stop now. Enjoy.

Got the money, will spend the money. Of course we all want this camera! If you didn't harbor some interest for it why would you even read this post...? My names on a preorder list at a small UK camera shop... I hope I get mine in the first batch.. I need this baby for christmas. 1080p movies of a flaming christmas pudding with my 85mm 1.2 L? Yes please! ;-)
nathan.wong @ Nov 24th 2008 11:34AM
I thought this camera was already available for sale. Shows you how much I know.
