Zepto takes the wraps off its 12.1-inch Notus A12 ultraportable
Zepto's been progressively taking its notebooks down in size for a little bit now, and while the 14-inch Nox A14 is certainly portable, the Notus A12 takes things a step or two further by squeezing a full-fledged computer into a chassis barely bigger than... an ink pen, or something like that. Anywho, the 12.1-inch machine packs a WXGA (1,280 x 800) panel, 800MHz Intel processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, an 80GB 4,200RPM hard drive, gigabit Ethernet, WiFi and the usual array of ports for €1068.59 ($1,360). Those scouting for a bit more oomph can certainly get that for a few more bills, but the real kicker here is the five to ten hours of battery life. 'Course, actually achieving those figures could be a challenge.

To be honest it should be around £300. The only good thing is the battery life but its too much unbalancing with the shit insides. May be a bit embarrassing in my eyes.
Definitely, my Lenovo X61 didn't cost much more, can easily compete in the size department, is soon one year old and would obliterate that thing in most benchmark competitions, except for such aiming at battery longevity.
This is a terrible deal. You can get a refurbished 12.1 ultraportable D410 from Dell for ~$200 that has better specs than this.
In what possible way is this a proper size comparison? Who here even owns a pen like that?
I have one, got it as a gift; it's actually very nice.
Maybe flashy people who sign important contracts, and pay $1300 for a netbook only to get it from a brand that is not associated with the netbook hype?
Just a normal ink pen, nothing fancy. I have one or two....
I have several pens like that; they are called "fountain pens." I have always appreciated a nice pen. They can be expensive, but the ones I buy are usually under $30.
I know they're nice, but they're completely impractical. What's wrong with using a simple peacock feather to scribble by candlelight?
I can honestly say that I never expected to see my exact fountain pen on Engadget. And for those of you who have never used one, you don't actually have to dip them in an inkwell—they have an internal reservoir of ink.
They're actually quite handy, as you can spray annoying coworkers on command and then say it was just an accident.
Don't just think they're for rich executives, either. I'm a high school student and I use a Parker Vector pen that I got on eBay for $10. It has a great feel and makes writing more fun.
80GB 4200 RMP hard drive is a ... khmmm... rubbish solution. We did try a similar laptop HP nc2500p with Vista and I would not recommend anybody going that way. Finally replaced the mishap with Vaio SZ61 - simply more bang for the buck. A lot of HP users have downgraded their 2500p's to XP, but when your corporate strategy is to go for Vista, then the only way with these little devices is SSD if you want better performance.
The spces are somewhat netbookish, no way to I see this selling.
At that price you'd think thered be 4GB Ram, 80GB SSD, 3Ghz processor, BluRay, EVDO/GSM/WiMax modem, & a touchscreen. Ok so the latter puts it out of the ultraportable cass but the current specs are not of the ultraportable/subnotebook variety either.
Their target market seems pretty clear based on this photo. If you have ever seen a pen like that in real life, you're probably living on Old Money and you don't really give a damn how much it costs or how good it is.
I have several pens like that, they were the standard before ball point pens. They aren't that expensive, they can be though.
It doesn't look that bad except the CPU. 800Mhz? I hope it's a mistype of 1800Mhz....:(
and, I can't find about the weight. How HEAVY is that? about 3lbs? or 5 lbs?
Its only 800 mhz, and the weight is about 1,1kg
also, this model isn't new, it has been on sale in Denmark in almost a year
ah but it's still not available from the American reseller ZeptoUSA
but it is in fact nothing to get excited about, Zeptos are good for their gaming models, want a 12" netbook, get the Inspiron Mini
The A12 is out in Germany since May. So why now? The danish manufacturer still sells it for € 1040 without operating system
what a completely misguided and uselessly underpowered disaster
That's a BIG pen
This thing is based on a number of selling points.
Weight 1.1kg (2.4lbs)
4.5 hours operation time going flat out - i.e. normal use will see probably up to 10 hours on a charge.
Magnesium frame for durability while staying light
LED screen
This is not a bamboo laptop, and it's not supposed to break the speed limit. It has a clear focus in the ultraportable (quality) segment.
Having said that I personally agree the price is too high. Not by much, though.
This one is old news, been around for a while.
dnag, that's sweeeeet
okay so the battery life is big but who can really sacrifice their wallet and speed for battery life- at that price anyone could just go and buy 1 or 2 more batteries for a better priced more powerful rig.
Can someone tell me the advantage of buying that instead of a Lenovo X61s which weights 1.3Kg (I checked), has a 1.8Ghz CPU, 12.1" screen, _EXCELLENT KEYBOARD_, and 3 year international warranty on site for $1,500 ?
Yeah I cant see how newsworthy this is....... Its nice looking and all but form isnt everything......
I have an ASUS eeePC and that thing seems like a dream compared to this beast. 900 MHz, 7" screen, 1 GB DDR2, 4g built-in solid state for what would be less than 300 euros on your side of the pond. My friend has the 9" screen with 8g built-in and that was ~250. Sure the memory seems low, but you can double it with flash or thumb drives for around the price of a taco - after all, who needs to be walking around with a veritable library of information. You could also pack an extra battery and still be at 50% of the price and 85% of the weight of this over-priced contraption.
You can get that exact same Waterman Phileas fountain pen at www.fountainpenhospital.com for only $51.
I have an EeePc that i paid $250 for and is a heck of alot more portable, and can still do just about the same stuff.
Disapointment!
800mhz? what year is this - 1999?
That's an awesome tablet pen - can I write on the tablet with that? =D
Love the NOX A14. Probably my next notebook. But I think I can see why this isn't offered in the U.S. Some very likeable aspects on this notebook, but it falls WAY short in other areas. And I swear the specs on the data sheet have to be wrong. 13.5mm (0.53") this is thinner than a lot of cell phones!
Why do they keep giving these things only 1GB ram to start with? I know it uses a little more power to have 2GB, but nothing compared to swapping to the disk. At the current cost of ram, they should build with 2GB and have 4GB or larger as options.
Look at that well-groomed hair, those great smiling eyes, striking pearly whites ~ Bill, you're a real cutie! And smart, too? Zowie!!!
