Video: LCD retrofitted onto Nintendo GameCube
Right, so we've spotted some fairly gorgeous LCD-into-GameCube integrations before, and we've even seen a couple that came dangerously close to making us laugh, but it's rare to find a respectable LCD infusion on video. Thus, we present to you Liuhuparta's own GameCube mod, which weds a Sony PSone LCD screen, an integrated Wavebird receiver, loads of wiring / spray paint / blue LEDs and a pinch of TLC with a classic black GC console. Hop on past the break to see portions of the build process and a brief demonstration of it in action.

too little too late?
Yeah.... Intec and a few other companies released a snap-on LCD screen/battery combo for the GCN a month after it was released in....what? 2001? I guess it's cool that it's integrated...but really Engadget?
That was a cool trick! Now make some good games for it!
Am I missing something here?

April fools..?
yeah, the screen u linked to is actually on there straight unlike this mod
i thought the same thing. either the guy who did this mod knew about that, or he just went "Oh man!"
as to why engadget posted about this, that im still a little confused on.
Cor blimey its a slow day in Engadget Land.
Are....you serious?
thats... what she said?
lol someones not upto date on tech
Everything in the video is so over dramatic xD
Why does everyone see this as such a bad thing? Personally, I think a Gamecube is the perfect console to mod since it's outdated enough to not be using it regularly but "new" enough to still have alot of decent games worth playing. For those who aren't too sure about what they're doing or who feel like learning to console mod, it's perfect.
I commend this guy for the effort he put into this.
Also lol @ the blue ring of hope. I thought that was quite funny.
Hey! I resemble that remark! The GameCube is beastly. It plays games that cost next to nothing, and the graphics are "good" enough. I just bought a WaveBird for my Gamecube, and I feel really good about it.... Not to mention the fact that gamecubes are around $30 now....
I agree, but disagree on other points. This is indeed a perfect "my first big hardware mod" project. and at the basic level, he didn't do a bad job.
I just don't see this as being really newsworthy. He didn't accomplish anything much that you couldn't BUY already, and the version you can buy looks cleaner. I have one. The LCD screen clips onto the little curved handle on the back of the GC, and it closes in the same direction as the disc lid. What else did he do? Put an LED in the power button and stuck a wavebird receiver underneath?
I suppose we could look at this as a Rookie of the Year type thing. If this is just his start, he could do some cool stuff in the future.
Have you missed every single LCD manufactured for the system ever?
The most ridiculous thing is the ones that clip on are seated in a more logical place than where this guy put it.
The motherboard...he thinks.
not to mention that the screen isn't even flush with the system like the ones sold by 3rd party companies are
fail
yummy!
WALL-E
YES!
Wow this is SOOO COOL... 7 years ago!
If it was a Wii with a built in screen, then I would be impressed. Btw how the heck did this make news on Engadget? Seems more like something that should be on Wii Fanboy.
All that work for something very few people care about, now if he had done it with a Wii I might actually care.
Well I could easily mod a screen into a Wii ,(even a touch screen cum linux, and even add BT and voice command/activation, if so required) but I just can't see why and how it would improve the "Wii experience".
Besides it would necessarily be a tiny LCD.
Nah, to play cyberbowling I prefer the Wii to be plugged to my 65" plasma screen or if really I'm in the mood to waste time lower the lights and swich on the HD beamer.
But hey, if there's someone willing to pay for it why not? How would you like it to be?
If it's an lcd screen for the Wii you are looking for, that exists already too. Pretty impressive design also. Only place I've seen it is on ebay but it looks nice.

So yeah, what everyone said. If you're going to do this, do it to a Wii. Except that's already been done too.
Jeez, that's definitely cheaper than I could ever even hope to make it!
Dam crafty chinamen!
That would be an interesting add-on for any "Bro Rape" Party!
"Ones and for all"
"waste of time" should be added as a tag
I find it amusing that you're all slagging engadget off for this but when they post an ad about putting a screen on an n64 and making it portable, you go weak at the knees and tug away at your little willies as furiously as you can.
You're all so fickle! Like little prepubescent girls with geeky goo running through their veins. Chill out ladies.
