Runes of Magic reaches 100k characters created on first day of open beta

As we mentioned last week, the highly-anticipated Runes of Magic fantasy MMO from Frogster Interactive has just entered open beta on December 15th. Normally the news of a small free-to-play MMO would be mentioned, and then subsequently forgotten as the larger, big-budget games continue to hog the attention. Yet Runes of Magic has an announcement that they're quite proud of: 100,000 characters created in the first 24 hours of the open beta.

Not only that, but out of the total 220,000 registrations to date, 20,000 accounts were created on Monday alone with more than 2 million quests completed. Just to be clear, this is not 100k accounts created on the first day. It's 100k characters created by 20k accounts. Still, it's great news for Frogster Interactive and we expect those accounts to rise throughout beta and into launch, which is scheduled for release in Q1 of 2009. For the complete press release and more information on the game's features, continue reading after the cut below.

Frogster Interactive Announces Successful Start to Open Beta Test

BERLIN and SAN FRANCISCO (December 17th, 2008) – Frogster Interactive today announced that the start of Runes of Magic's open beta phase exceeded all expectations. Over 100,000 characters were created in the first 24 hours and are now populating the world of Taborea. Due to the high number of players, Frogster opened an additional game world on Monday afternoon. The international community now is spread over seven servers – even though Runes of Magic is only in the early stages of the open beta phase.

In the first few hours Frogster also noted a significant increase in registration numbers. Out of the total number of 220,000 registrations, more than 20,000 Accounts were created on Monday alone and immediately entered the game world: more than 2 million quests were completed in over 200,000 hours of combined playing time in the game world of Taborea. These numbers underline the relevance of quests and immersive background story in the MMORPG developed by Runewaker Entertainment.

"We will systematically analyze the feedback of the high number of players in the coming weeks and use it to give Runes of Magic the final polish for the official release in the first quarter of 2009," said Daniel Ullrich, director of product management. "The beta is now open to all interested players and the game can be downloaded free of charge after a short registration on www.runesofmagic.com."

All characters possess unique skills with impressive combo attacks, and can use mounts for traveling around the game world.

For guilds and players, it's possible to arrange your own virtual homes and guildhalls with individual furnishings.
