Ask Joystiq Nintendo: Expressing Interest Edition

In this week's Ask Joystiq Nintendo, a reader brings up a subject we had managed to stop thinking about for a while: the Japan-exclusive Super Famicom remake of The Legend of Zelda. And now we're going to be bummed out all day thinking about all the stuff we're doing instead of playing that.

Do you have a Nintendo-related question? Email it in to asknintendo AT joystiq DOT com, and we'll (daydream about BS Satellaview Zelda while we) investigate it for you!

Andrew Thoreson asks:

A while back, Square Enix announced that the classic Final Fantasy games were coming to VC. Has there been any more word on when those would be hitting; particularly FF6? Also, have they made any notice of changes, such as changing the "Final Fantasy 3" on the title screen to "Final Fantasy 6", and so on? And one last question, has there been any talk of bringing other SE titles to the NA VC, such as Chrono Trigger or Dragon Warrior?

Since this question came in, Nintendo of Japan announced that the first Final Fantasy would come to the VC in May. That is, of course, no definite indication of a North American release, but at least we can see wheels turning. As for changing the titles, yeah. Not likely. Be glad Square Enix is even deigning to dump the ROMs. Don't expect it to do stuff to them. Even less likely is a VC release of Chrono Trigger, since the DS port is still selling. Dragon Quest seems like something that Square Enix would actually think about, perhaps around the release of Dragon Quest IX or (in the distant future) X. Normally, I wouldn't say that, but Final Fantasy is coming to the VC, and Famicom-era nostalgia is even more closely tied to Dragon Quest than FF.

Nook asks:

Is there any chance of (BS Satellaview Zelda) seeing the light of day for the world? Of course I'm referring to the following Zelda...and direct sequel?!?! (I didn't know bout that un)

I am expressing interest in this, maybe you can ask Nintendo and let them know there is an interest in this.

Note: If you aren't familiar with Nintendo's satellite-delivered Super Famicom Zelda remixes, check out this article for more info. Basically, Nintendo offered serialized, heavily altered remakes of The Legend of Zelda and A Link to the Past via a satellite receiver peripheral. We could never get the live narration (!) that went along with the Link to the Past remake, but some plain assembled versions of the games would be great. Unfortunately, such bounty is extremely unlikely.

This is definitely one of the better Virtual Console pipe dreams for us to vainly beg for. I join you in expressing interest.

Mario Duck asks:

Hello, I've been having problems with my Wii since I updated to 4.0. The system is freezing up in the middle of the game, channels are sometimes not loading at all and if they do, it takes a lot for them to do. Is this because of the new update? do you know of anyone else having this problem? Thank you!

Short answer: yes, there do appear to be problems with the new update. Some Nintendo forum users suggest making sure nothing's connected to the USB ports, while others suggest clearing off your SD card and recopying stuff. Nintendos tech support's suggestion: call Nintendo tech support. I know that's not a satisfying answer, but it's the most likely to lead to results!

Every week, we'll answer reader questions about the Wii, the DS, or any other Nintendo-related topic in Ask Joystiq Nintendo. If you have a question, e-mail it to asknintendo AT joystiq DOT com! You need your questions answered, and we need content for this column. It's a symbiotic relationship!
