Canon EOS 5D Mark II firmware update cures 'black dot' ailment
Those equipped with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II might've noticed a few continuity errors between their shots and real life, such as light from a building window missing its right side. The company has released firmware update 1.0.7 to eradicate this "black dot" phenomenon -- which can affect any point light source -- as well as fix a problem with vertical banding noise that appears when recording in sRAW1 format. Hit up the read link for patch instructions. You can go now resume your regularly-scheduled Mark II lovefest.

Ab█ut time.
Thanks for the update news Engadget.
I don't like the language they use: "improves and mitigates". Last time I checked neither means to "correct". Still I'm curious to know the results. Anybody test this yet? I hope it works.
yes, there have been tests and reports of success - check the 5d wiki status page for more info! http://is.gd/9pTe
And there was much rejoicing! Thanks for the good news. Not that I have one, but it's good to know Canon fessed up and fixed it promptly. My lowly XTI bows to the 5D god.
I have had mine since last Saturday - haven't noticed either of these issues yet. Ill wait to update the firmware until they do happen.
On another note - does anyone think the video looks way better on a TV connected via HDMI than on a computer screen? On my Panny plasma the video looks great (except the hideous amounts of moire) - when looking at them on my 2407HC they aren't so hot looking.
How are you watching the videos on your computer? It's most likely that your TV is tuned to show video in a way that you find preferable, while your PC is just showing the raw video. TVs are also much better at deinterlacing out of the box, so if you're looking at 60i video that would be a serious issue.
Either way, the video data is identical - it's just the output devices that tend to differ.
Damnit! The eBay price for my 5D1 just lost $1000. Why couldn't those a-holes wait another week before doing this?
Cool! Now they just need to cure the "lack of wide availability of the 5D Mark II" problem.
The specs looks pretty exciting on that camera.
Why can't they release a version for lefthanded people dammit!
(I'm a righty but you must have something to complain about 'handy I feel')
For what it's worth, I'm a lefty and prefer the common configuration--it allows me to focus and zoom with my left hand (insert mandatory "that's what she said" remark here).
great, now where's 24 fps recording and proper 1080p output from the hdmi socket?
Here?

haha yeah probably... but not here quite yet....
Awesome. While we're fixing things that should've been worked out before release, any chance I can get continuous auto-focus on videos now?
Nice. Now how the heck to I get my hands on one? Every store is sold out.
Balls,
I actually was in the same boat as you before Christmas..all the webstores in the US sold out. However, I found www.digitalrev.com, a Hong Kong shop. I spoke to the reps via email about once per day until I was confident that I was indeed getting the cam that my Amex was charged for. They shipped the cam via DHL and did a very good job of packing it. I live across the river from NYC and got the cam in about seven days. I still see they have them in stock:

No tax, but they mark up the cam about $250 to make up for the difference.
