CyWee brings its 3D game controller and streaming media device to CES

It looks like that CyWee Z game controller that Engadget Chinese got its hands on a couple months ago will be showing its face at CES this week. Essentially a 3D USB mouse, the device utilizes a dual-axis gyroscope -- the first game controller to do so, according to the company. This guy can be used either straight up (for that classic Wiimote vibe) or folded into the rough approximation of a gun -- you know, for games where you shoot things. It's unclear whether or not the company's game console will be making the trip as well (we know how much you love off-brand Chinese game consoles!) but visitors to their booth can also expect to see CyWee X -- an 802.11n-based media streaming solution that delivers audio and video to your television in 1080p resolution. More pictures of the lovable device after the break.

lawsuit incoming from nintendo
pblossom @ Jan 13th 2009 9:57PM
actually, nintendo is actually the one being sued by hillcrest for launching its motion-plus remote that includes a double gyroscope that hillcrest patented.
cywee's technology has one gyroscope, but two axes, a technology they have been developing themselves for years at the industrial technology research institute in taiwan (and before the wii was released) and patented, so they are not at risk of being sued by anyone. if you use the wiimote and then try the cywee z, you will see that the wiimote cannot detect rotational motions, whereas the cywee z can.

Mmmm, sweet sweet Chinese brand-name knock off.

This is pitiful. No attempt to disguise name. No attempt to disguise controller design. Lots of attempt to make a product.

it's pronounced "Cy (as in Cyber) -Wee" for Cyber Wireless Entertainment Evolution.

Still not as bad as that Sports Challenge game I saw everywhere from Kroger to Ace Hardware over the holidays.

what interests me more is if those models in the picture actually believe that they have a real job.

While the controller is a knockoff, it's more of an interesting knockoff composite - the twist thing is in some mice (I'm thinking of Elecom, which might be a knockoff of another mouse design actually). However, here, it actually does solve the problem of the Wii remote being a lousy gun controller, and this seems like a far better solution than the Zapper shell.
Ironically, I want to see this product as a Wii controller instead of some offbrand crap game console with 12 built-in games and 12 more on an additional cartridge, with no more to ever come out.
pblossom @ Jan 13th 2009 10:02PM
the twist design actually came to the founder of CyWee while he was watching Transformers in the theater. :)
CyWee doesn't make consoles, it's PC-based, so as long as you have a PC that runs PC/online games, it's plug-and-play!
pblossom @ Jan 13th 2009 10:18PM
by the way, the pictures of the concept-console is outdated. No console. PC based, plug-and-play device. did you manage to test it out at their CES booth? :)
