3D is back, but is it better than ever?
No face-consuming goggles were necessary to see that 3D was all the rage at this year's CES, but for those even remotely knowledgeable about the tech, you'd realize that 2009 is far from the being the first year in which the third dimension was hot stuff. Join us over at Engadget HD for a look at the past, present and potential future of 3D in the cinema, the home and your life. Seriously, it gets personal.

Pointless without motion-tracking sensors for VR..gotta have 'em
I love me some 3D!
I love my nose some rest.
So what about those of us who already wear glasses? Are these designed to be worn over our prescription ones? And if they are, how goofy would those be?
Someone wake me up once TVs can be stand-alone 3D.
Went to see My Bloody Valentine 3D, the glasses fit over my glasses just fine.
My Bloody Valentine 3D was sweet, polarized glasses, very cheap included with price of admission, they even had a nice recycling station (because they have no other use).
Seeing a eyeball pop out and slide back in, IN 3D, awesome, too bad the movie was just a classic horror movie formula, can't wait for this technology to be applied to some action movies.
Ever hear of contacts? or laser-treatment? But yeah they work over regular glasses.
Wwhat, you fail at reading comprehension.
He said "So what about those of us who already wear glasses?" He did not say, "So what about those of us who wear contacts?" He also did not say, "So what about those of us who have had laser surgery?"
I don't know if this was intended, but because of that title, I have the song from those Hess Truck commercials stuck in my head. Thanks Engadget.
We're back! And better than ever!
Wasn't that a Jimmy Van Halen song?

it is a pretty awesome technique i saw a few films like that years and years ago
saw My Bloody Valentine 3D last week... movie was horrible and boring but the 3D was just fantastic! More movies in 3D please, maybe a 3D version of Wall-E?
yeah if it was 2D you'd walkout feeling like you got shafted, but the 3D sold it big time.
I was at CES and got to try these things out a few times, and I thought they were amazing. Not sure if they'd fit over existing glasses mike...because I wear contacts :) But they were pretty cool. Not as great on some games as others - one of the FPS games they had (tried this one at pepcom) took a good two or three minutes to get your eyes focused right...but for most of the games it worked pretty well. The big Guitar Hero demo they had looked amazing, though I can't help but think about what a horrible waste of 3D that is... But otherwise, it seems like pretty cool tech. Especially because it doesn't require anything _too_ crazy - works with any existing game, with existing NVidia cards, and existing (though high end - needs 120Hz) monitors. If you've got all those, all you need is the $120 glasses.
If you think that those glasses are just 1 pixel LCD screens then $120 seems pretty pricey when you can get an LCD screen of 22" with 1764000 pixels for the same money.
But it's all relative I guess, as long as they get completely black and aren't angle dependant for their blackness as some of the old shutter glasses were.
Spiderman in 3D was the biggest ripoff only a couple of scenes were 3D and you had to keep putting on and taking off the glasses. Honestly, I don't think the 3D is a game changer.
go watch Bolt or My Bloody Valentine 3D... the 3D part is implemented very well, esp. in My Bloody Valentine.
Does anyone know if the Super Bowl is going to be broadcast in 3D at select theaters - and if so, whereabouts in NYC will this happen and how do I get in?
Totally pointless if you only have one eye.
No seriously.
This is the Golden Age of 3D movies! And I should know; I've seen them all. "Bolt" 3D was one of the best ever (probably *THE* best ever), and "Monsters and Aliens," "Coraline," and "Up!" are in the pipeline. In the lobby of my local cinema I could see publicity for SIX 3d movies, and all projected with glorious brilliance and using awesome circularly polarized glasses that don't require you to keep you head perfectly erect.
Yep, it's the golden age of 3d movies at the theater, but I'm not sure it's gonna happen in my living room.
If the future of 3-D theaters include not jacking up prices of already over priced movie tickets then I am up for that change.
