Nokia ships half a million 5800 XpressMusic handsets in 30 days
If this were coming from any other mouth, we'd definitely second guess it. As it stands, though, it's hard to dispute the words of Nokia's CEO when it comes to matters involving Nokia. Mr. Olli Pekka Kallasvuo stated rather proudly during the firm's Q4 results call that it had shipped just over 500,000 5800 XpressMusic mobiles (better known as the Tube) in just 30 days. That figure becomes even more impressive when you realize that shipments only occurred in select markets, though it should be noted that "units shipped" and "units sold to end users" could indeed be very different things. Still, half a million in just a month ain't too shabby in today's economy, so here's the kudos you're clearly due, Nokia.

Wow, they sorta look like THE PHONE WHICH MUST NOT BE NAMED!!
All phones with a giant touchscreen kinda have to look alike.
Voldephone?
Yeah, Paul, it looks a bit like the iPhone which in turn looked a bit like the LG Prada. Nice to see you're on your second account already though.
Anyway, I'm not convinced by the 5800. The fact that they're launching it without the Comes with Music service in the UK (although it'll arrive later apparently) just once again reinforces how inept Nokia's marketing department are.
@paul
How would you prefer them to style a touchscreen phone? like a pineapple?
I am using this phone now, it is GREAT!!!
Well, Paul, two reasons really...
1) You've already been noted as a whining little bitch about Apple coverage and how Engadget are trying to appease MS fanboys - whatever they are - and one of your key points of contention is that Engadget are scared to mention the iPhone.
2) You're a cock.
Can we expect a Paul B. Chapel soon?
Take someone who has never seen any other touch screen phones, and ask them to make a FULLSCREEN, touch screen phone, and how do you think it will look?
You don't go around saying car manufacturers go around ripping each other off because there cars have the same kinda shape!
I hope you see the point I'm making.
Wow, someone is mad that Apple had record earnings last quarter ;)
Take some Zunex and chill out, my friend.

Keep on being an amusing comment troll on Engadget, Paul; at least now I know you internet tough guys are finally good for something.
oh hey paul don't you have more crappy articles to plagiarize
LOL, can't dispute the info above, can you? You so got owned.
The problem for you is that only points that stand on valid ground can actually be disputed. Unfortunately for you, all you've done is complain about the phone being in black, using an efficient user interface, and Nokia being honest.
Was Apple moving to Intel processors such a black mark against them in your mind as well?
Ladies and gentlemen, now this is what I call an internet tough guy extraordinaire.
The only thing that matters in this discussion is that you guys said that Nokia wasn't copying the iPhone and I gave you an article, from Engadget no less, where an executive admitted that this very phone was a copy of the iPhone.
And if you low rank me, you're just pissed because I'm right. End of discussion.
"The only thing that matters in this discussion is that you guys said that Nokia wasn't copying the iPhone and I gave you an article, from Engadget no less, where an executive admitted that this very phone was a copy of the iPhone."
Members of the audience should kindly note that reading isn't particularly a forte of internet tough guys.
"When pressed during the Q&A about the striking similarity to the little Cupertino device, Anssi Vanjoki -- Nokia's Executive VP & General Manager of Multimedia -- said, "If there is something good in the world then we copy with pride."
*All* businesses copy things which will make them money. Nokia does it. Apple does it. Microsoft does it. It's nice to hear someone honest enough to admit it though. It's a shame Apple can't be as honest when it comes to advertising:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Inc._advertising#Criticism
And the only reason you get lowranked in every article you comment in is because you're a sad little troll. Hell, even iEye or Clak didn't resort to plagiarizing poorly written articles from other sites. Sorry babes.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, blah, blah, blah, you still got owned. But what happened to my good friend, Mark Anderson? Isn't he going to come back and call me a cock?
"But what happened to my good friend, Mark Anderson? Isn't he going to come back and call me a cock?"
He is taking a break so I'm covering for him.
You're a cock.
LOL, thank you. I needed the laugh.
I don't get it, Why does this Paul Chapel guy still exist here?
Instead of voting negatives, it should voteban.
You mean touchscreen smartphones that existed since 2003?
The 5800 was released in the UK today for £250 SIM free. That's a pretty amazing price for a brand-new touchscreen smartphone.
That's the power of the brand name. People around the world are JUST hearing about "HTC" since last summer. Nokia's name has been around for years.
In reality, the phone UI and Screen aren't finger-friendly, web browser is TERRIBLE (must get Opera Mini), and entire interface is not snappy. But it's an amazing all-in-one device, for that matter.
I prefer original Nokia browser over Opera mini. Nokia browser isint bad. All nokia interface is finger friendly, not so good as iPhone, but there is no frustration to use it.
I agree. The camera needs work as I'm very disappointed in the grainy nature of shots. I don't think it's just the down bump to 3.2 that does it either.
Overall I'm pleased, but *would* like to be included in the v11 firmware. Still on 10.
I love the hard buttons for call, end & menu & the top right media button. It makes the phone much more practical for me.
The interface is also a fair bit more responsive than Windows Mobile. Maybe not the TouchFlo HTC customization, but better than WM as a whole.
They're all going to be bought by batman.
Haha nice.
given Nokia's much-loved build quality, and operating system, I can't say I'm tremendously surprisee.
I used an N95 for quite a long time, and I must say that Nokia's reputation is well earned
Considering how small the average customer interest is that specific model. half million is a shot in the dark.
Yeah, uh guys, "Shipped" is not the same as sold. Any company with a bit of power over it's suppliers and retailers can "ship" a million phones. If no one buys those phones, it doesn't matter. In fact, it is worse for the company than if they never made the phones to begin with. It's like Microsoft and the Zune. Microsoft "shipped" a million Zunes in 6 months, but it took over a year to sell them, and most of them at fire sale prices. I remember Woot selling them for under a hundred dollars.
Usually, yes, but the reports coming out suggest that Nokia can't keep up with demand. It's easy to believe that shipped and sold are almost equal.
Trust me Nokia phones don't just sit in the store. They sell.
Check the updated read link, in 53 days they sold half a million and shipped a million
vey silly-wide-screen.
"If this were coming from any other mouth, we'd definitely second guess it."
I wonder why you never second guess apple's figures...
So, Nokia delivered 500k of Tube in 30 days, while Apple sold 3M 3G iPhones with their first 30 days,
I guess we have a winner ;)
Apple sold 10 million per year and Nokia 450 million or the RAZR got sold a 120 million times. I´m not sure what kinda winner this makes Apple in the end.
Nokia sold 113 million phones in 2008. Now, who's the winner?
Maybe, but in the same 30 days Nokia also sold tens of millions of other phones.
"Nokia sold 113 million phones in 2008. Now, who's the winner?"
Actually, that's the number for Q4 only (October to December). All in all, Nokia sold 468.4 Million devices in 2008, just to put things into perspective...
Been using this for a month. Great phone really.
I have used this and it is really snappy (fast) to use and it has some nice eye candy transitions (not enabled by default). It's much faster to use than S60 3rd edition phones and focus first and then activate style double tapping in menus work well. That way you have more options easily available and you do not accidentally press wrong "button".
Shops sell them like bread, so I'm not surprised at all.
Not 0.5 million, but 1 mill. Link: http://www.nokia.com/A4136001?newsid=1284621
But you think Engadget will update their article to take away the negative spin and add the bigger figures? Never.
Yes, it seems that they already shipped 1 million (the 500.000 is for the first 30 days) and they did not even start selling in most of western Europe or US (I mean officially). They launched it in the first days of January in Romania and after 2-3 days I checked the biggest online stores and they all listed it as the top selling phone (and I think it will stay there for a long time). Also, it's pretty cheap here, 300-325 euro all taxes included (free, with no voice plan). Of course it can be bought at about 100 euro or so with 2 year plans (but the biggest phone companies still have to launch their offers). My bet is it will have better sales than the original iPhone in the first year (which was about 6 million if I rembember well). It might sell better than iPhone 3G too, even if meanwhile the globabl crisis struck most of the countries. I will buy it soon myself, just have some other expenses for the moment (and I will wait a few months to get a stable firmware version and without headset problems - some have a problem with inconsistent sound - problem easy to solve but i'll wait anyway)
i was supposed to buy one. however, people get troubles in their Tubes.

i dunno if i still should get one or what. :|
It has happened to me once or twice. But the v11 update has fixed a lot of things.
I have had this phone for about 2 weeks now and love it. The only real problem is the lack of applications for symbian 5th addition but it's growing by the day.
