Big wow! I don't understand why people are so stoked over this non-netbook. It's waaaay over-price, underperforms, the screen resolution is a pain to use, the nub is too sensitive, the battery is weak, the only thing that's going for it is the form factor.
But, but... you can stick it in your pants!
(First one that says "That's what she said" gets bitchslapped.)
That's what sh- *SLAP!*
OW! >_
@warlun
I agree.
I admit, I was pretty excited to try one of these out. When I finally got the chance, I was really disappointed. I hated the little nub-mouse for it's ultra-sensitivity and (as much as I love super-high resolutions), it was a bit of a strain on the eyes.
@prettz5
I do agree with you on the hi-res screen part.
Ever tried a Gameboy Micro? Those hurt my eyes so bad that I got rid of it.
the only thing that's going for you is that you're the first one to post
So it sort of means that you have nothing going for you...
So you replied to a guy who posted "First!" and his thread was deleted? Don't worry, warlun might not understand, but I do.
wow!$972 for a netbook.,its crazy to think i paid $340 for my 10' asus. a $632 dollar diference on just 1 netbook.,based on the state of the economy. doubt will be highest selling netbook in 2009.
Nice one walrun...delete your first post and move it down a few so the burn dosen't hurt as bad
"wow!$972 for a netbook."
But, it's not a netbook. At least thats what Sony says. But the PS3 is also a personal computer, so who knows?
I will wait for 1.6 or 1.8 atom versions.
I agree. It's too expensive for what it is. "Non-netbook" is fine, but you really need to separate yourself from the pack more if you're going to charge as much as Sony is.
Cheers,
Jarrod
1.4lbs and 0.75" at it's thickest. It does fine job at attacking the premium side of things. We all know premium products are not best sellers, but they have their market.
I don't see why people are insulting this. If this was the only "netbook" on the market, I would be pissed, but yet we have so many choices. For some, this is a waste of money, for others, what the hell took it so long to come out? You don't like it, don't buy it, you have choices.
And I wouldn't buy this either, I would buy a cheaper netbook myself.
Well if you want to look stylish while taking notes and doing rudimentary tasks, this works wonders (if you can afford it).
Unfortunately, looking at Sony's track records, it will take more than six months for us to see a drop in price. :/
In general Vaio´s only drop in price if a newer version gets released and even then its marginal so waiting for that.. no use.
While you are at it about the typing of notes I couldn´t agree more. One big reason to buy this laptop is the full keyboard it´s equiped with so you can actually type 10 finger blindly on it while the cheap netbooks have a keyboard which is just a littlebit smaller though just small enough that even a girl can´t type 10 finger blind on it. Besides that a carbon casing, high-res screen, nub, a proper SDD are plenty of reasons why this gimmick is expensive. Sure there are cheaper netbooks around but most of them are build so flimsy comparing them with eachother simply is a no-go.
JZ:
Exactly. This thing is ultraportable quality in a new Atom enabled for factor. There are lighter machines running a Core2Duo and with 12" screens than any netbook. This is just that level of engineering brought to an Atom based mini computer.
do want!!
Oooooh! VAIO P. I love you but I can't have you, 'cos you are a Violently And Irrationally Overpriced Pussybook.
I see what you did there...
that was really funny!
Is it possible to upgrade the atom processor?
Ordered!
$1199 seems silly if the $300 difference only gets you an SSD and Vista Premium, especially if you're just going to install another OS anyway. But... the allure of a completely silent netbook suckered me in. It was about $1405 with the extended battery and CA sales tax.
Obama is a good comparison. Much like our next president, it's based more on appearances then reality. Obama is a so-so politician from the sticks, not known for ever doing anything important, and the Vaio P is an overhyped netbook that is neither "pocket size" nor worth the extremely high price for mundane hardware. But they both look really nice in pictures. I bet the appeal of both wears thin after exposure to reality.
Chicago is the Sticks?
I'd rather have a President who has clearly had world experience (born in HI, lived in Africa, Asia, "mainland" US) than one who had everything on a silver platter and STILL managed to fuck the whole thing up. If you don't notice the difference between Obama and a majority of the politicians out there, you aren't paying enough attention.
Saw the new Vaio P at the Sony Style Store, Beverly Center, Los Angeles CA. Honestly, I had high hopes for this thing and was disappointed by it much like I was disappointed by the G1 and BlackBerry Storm.
Feels cheap, it's beyond small, I can't even see the darn thing (using my lovely 17" MBPro right now :-)) and it's impossible to type on the VAIO P, I just don't get it.
The commercials show a girl putting it in her purse, I guess Sony can be credited with making the world's first netbook geared directly to Women!
Good job Sir Howard Stringer!
Lol

Hello, I am DaKrisht. I am a spammer. I also suck my thumb!
My experience at the SonyStyle store in Manhattan was the complete opposite. I found the P to be of high build quality, exceptionally light and easy to touch type on. Also, nothing else that comes close to the P's size has a screen resolution of 1600 X 768, NOTHING else. That alone is worth the price premium and I had no problem using MS Works and Firefox side by side at the same time.
I like it...
But i live in Argentina :S
I still can't believe people are buying these things.
I think they should reissue the Sony X505.
I bought a LenovoS10 for $299 yesterday. Now that is a very good laptop with a VERY GOOD price. Why would I pay three times as much for a laptop that will be almost the same as the one I bought?
People really buy into the hype.
Why do people think that only Apple is allowed to charge a premium for good design?
Because they are charging apremium over BAD design
Not fair!! ...Mine still says "processing". LOL o well, guess he got lucky.

The Lenovo is a good machine. But hardly "almost the same" as the VAIO P:
* 1024x600 vs. 1600x768 => 2x more screen resolution + LED backlight
* 512MB vs. 2GB => 4x more memory
* 2.4 lbs. vs 1.4 lbs. => 40% lighter
* P has integrated WWAN, 802.11n bluetooth
* (but P has slower 1.33 vs. 1.6 processor)
You may not care about any of the above, so you're right not to consider the P. But not everyone will feel the same way about the difference in features. The P is expensive because it has more newer technologies and more shrunken down -- Worth it for those that care.
3 points about S10:
1. Higher resolution but on a 8" screen, which means instead of having to scroll you have to use the magnifier so you can read the tiny text....
2. The newer S10's have 1 gig (how much is 2 gig upgrade anyway, 20$?).
3. The S10 has bluetooth (well mine does) and has an expansion port so can add anything else.
As most people have already said, the only good thing about the VAIO vs standard Netbook is that it can potentially fit in your pocket.
Hopefully sony will bring the 1.86 atom across the sea from japan and make this an actually usable device. I'm still debating buying the dynamism version. its about $2/300 premium for the 1.86 processor but imo if you're spending this much on a "lifestyle pc" might as well get something thats not gonna take one look at vista and throw up.
however for those of you with 1.33 processors windows 7 final build will be a relief.
That price for those specs.... what did PJ Barnum say about suckers?
Just got a call from the Sony Store - mine's just arrived. yaay. going to pick it up now.
The Sony VAIO P has debuted at Amazon with an $899.99 price tag and Amazon and Amazon has 3 (!) units on stock right now.
That’s not disappointing, considered that our friends in England now have to pay an astronomical £789.84 ($1,148.36) at Amazon.co.uk to get their hands on one.
