Nikon D700 gets tweaked to shoot video via live-view

Some Canon die-hards have already managed to coax their DSLRs to record video via live-view, and it looks like Nikon aficionados are now able to do the same, albeit not quite as easily just yet. That's because the mod requires both access to Nikon's SDK for the D700 and the necessary skills to actually do something with it, in this case capturing video from the live-view feed via USB. The good news is that the modder responsible for the hack, Olivier Giroux, is planning to "productize" the software and make it publicly available, but until then, you'll have to make do with the sample video after the break which, while not quite 480p, still looks pretty decent, all things considered.

the Canon SD1000/750/850/1100 already does 480p. DSLRs need to catch up.
lawl.
Have you ever SEEN the video you get off of tiny point 'n shoot cameras? Jitter city. Jitter city in whatever resolution is still jitter city.
There's a reason all decent camcorders are still built with grips they way they are: so you can hold them steady while panning. Point and shoot cameras can barely be held still enough for a decent macro shot, never mind continuously. DSLR's grips do not meet this requirement either, though they aren't as bad.
Just because technology lets us cram extra features into smaller or different form factors - and for marketing reasons, everybody will - doesn't mean we SHOULD.
Video is impossible when using a dSLR in the "proper" manor. That is with the optical viewfinder. The D90 and 5D Mark II get around this with their live view facilities, however live view itself is a compromise.
don't generalize. the canon's i mentioned are NOT jittery. they're spectacularly stable, and are quite sharp. you should see for yourself before judging
anyone else take a look at those plants growing ? :)
At least to me, the leaves don't look like what you're talking about. By that stage in development, they would already have their second set of leaves.
If your weed plants are that twisted you have done something wrong, man.
Is it ok if I mark you as a spammer? I can? Oh joy! Thanks!
GTFO. This has nothing to do with this topic. It is also a rubbish idea.
The Canon hack just used the DSLR as a web camera. I can direct my Skype to use the Canon PC 'live-view'. I can also use in the Windows Movie Maker as a video source!
Now that the DSLR can give you a live view I see no reason why it can not record (capture) that video feed that is being displayed on the screen. Nikon does it, but mind you there is a massive interruption if try to take a digital still. For me I would have designed it to take a simple frame shot from the continuously running video (as an option) with absolutely no interruption to the recorded video - yeah it may not be the best quality but good enough and way better than a couple of seconds of blackness in your recorded video.
Way off topic but so funny.
call me when the D3x records video.... and is about $4000 less...
Why would you want the D3x to do video? The resolution of the sensor wouldn't be of any benefit (1080p is only about 2 full color MP). If anything the D3 would be the way to go, considering its superior low light performance.
Dude, this was already covered by Engadget.

We don't need YOU.
Why can't you just hook up the D700, or D300 for that matter via HDMI - which would be 1080i - to a computer and with a decent video card and software, set it to record 'what you see'?
Presumably you could. However not everyone has a capture card in their computer. Let alone one that can accept HDMI. And then of course you would have to record with all the information displays off.
At first there I thought that was a picture of seedling Cannabis....I was like WTF?
