Seagate's 2TB Constellation ES is rife with potential space puns
It's been a long time coming, but Seagate's finally unveiled its first 2TB hard drive, the 3.5-inch Constellation ES. The hefty spinner also comes in 500GB and 1TB varieties and runs at 7,200RPM, which should make it a bit faster than Western Digital's behemoth, according to reviews for the latter. It'll be out calendar Q3, which we take to be fancy schmancy business talk for "this Summer." Meanwhile, the 2.5-inch ES-less Constellation line sports 3 Gbps SATA and SAS 2.0 interface. Look for this one in 160GB and 500GB sizes sometime this quarter, with Dell said to be one the first companies to offer the drives. Check out one more out-of-this-world promotional image after the break.

as long as the firmware doesn't screw with ..you know, everything, I'm in.
I have a bunch of Seagate 1.5TB's, not a single one has gave me problems!
Ive really learned to trust Seagate with the new 1.5TB's (Despite some people having problems)
If its one thing I can guarentee is Seagates 2TB will be cheaper then Western Digital, Seagate really did it right when they priced the 1.5TB, it started at around $190 (Just 6 months ago, when 1TB's were the same price), and now they are a constant $130, while 1TB's are just a tad cheaper
My guess is Seagate will price them at $200 TOPS, compared to WD's $300 2TB :/
Definitely waiting on these and avoiding WD's slow alternative.
..and yes, I have 8 x 1.5TB Seagates and none failing but then again I flashed with latest firmware anyway as a precaution.
I received a new drive after my first drive died from them. After a week I downloaded the firmware upgrade from Seagate. That thing lasted a week after the firmware update and died too. I actually think its a heat issue now as I was able to get both of them to boot a few times when they were hooked up out of the case and had air circulating around them till they wouldn't boot any more. I'm pretty sure the firmware thing was just a way to cover up a faulty hardware issue. I won't ever be buying a drive from them again, I asked for my money back and to talk to a supervisor but all they told me is they can't do that and will be sending me another of the same drives. I'm on my third 750GB AS drive now. I suspect that one will die soon too.
I don't trust that much data being on 1 drive.
That's why RAID was invented.
People probably said that about 250 MB drives too back in the day...
Pretty sure people used to say that about 1GB.
And 10GB.
And 100GB.
And 500GB.
And they'll keep saying that after we have 500PB drives.
2009 is the death of Raid5 by the way... Google "Raid5 2009". Raid6 will last longer, but it too will reach its EOL very, very soon.
they already have the manufacturing tech down, lets hope they're spending the better part of this year testing and perfecting their drivers.
I'd only buy these things in pairs and RAID 1 them together.
Not to mention I'd stay far away from Seagate after the firmware fiasco.
does anyone know how much these are?
well if Seagate can't release a 1.5Tb drive that works without major firmware crisis, then who'd trust them with 2Tb.
idiots like me, thats who.
(7 x1.5Tb, reflashed)
Well, if you gotten ES drives, you'd be safe from problems :P
These are a different model
@beastage,
If you had read their forums or just about any of the related knowledge base articles, you'd know that the ES.2 versions were just as affected. I didn't run around for several days flashing affected ES.2 drives just for fun.
Like...All your space are belong to us!
I find I am having a hard time accepting a drive that large. I guess I feel more comfortable knowing my data is spread across multiple cheaper drives and I won't have a freakin' heart attack the next time it decides to go south for no reason.
500gb is the largest ill go without having to worry about the drive dying ANY SECOND. 500gb is tried and true...
Space puns, space puns, lemme see...
OH!
Here's hoping the firmware updates don't render it a monolith.
best i got
Kind of shocked more people haven't attempted to pun?
This drive is out of this world...
This drive will hold more data then uranus...
This drive is the biggest in the universe...
This drive should be able to fit BSG/SG1/FF/etc...
mine aren't that great, come on guys wheres all the good puns at?
I used to work at a studio where all the systems had space themed names (including one called space!). Sometimes I miss working there.
I bought a Maxtor USB HD. The thing failed and I lost loads of data. I bust it open, and there is a Seagate hard drive sitting in there. I agree with the fellow above, I would not want all my data on one drive. Now, I back up my back ups.

Actually, since we're not all in the USA and some of us don't want to think about when your summer is (or work out, for every webpage, where the author comes from and which audience they're likely to be aiming at), I think that "calendar Q3" is a far superior phrase than "this Summer."
It's called the INTERNet for a reason, you know! :-)
In Space, No One Can Hear You Click.
the 500gb laptop drive has been out for a while, i ordered one a few days ago. Its 140 shipped from newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148374
4 x 1.5TB Seagates Raid 10... all dead.
No thanks on this one... but then again, I don't want green power either.
Guess I'll just have to wait.
I think you mean it's "rife" with potential space puns. Unless you're making a pun related to starfruit?
"It'll be out calendar Q3, which we take to be fancy schmancy business talk for "this Summer."
...only for the northern hemisphere....thats why businesses talk in quarters and not seasons.
Isn't Q3 calendar Fall, and not Summer?
no.
Q3 is July, Aug and Sept. Summer starts at the end of June and Fall starts at the end of September.
Nice, 2TB of Seagate storage - now you get to lose twice the amount of data when the firmware goes bad... That's just sheer genius!
Space, The final frontier...
I need this...But I'll wait just in case there is something wrong with the firmware :-p
I thought porn was the final frontier? 2 TB worth of porn... wow. Remember, this was made by the company with the CEO that said that Seagate is for porn.
3 USB Toshiba 1TB model will replace my Seagate 1.5TB drives and never Seagate again for me.Have enough hassle with them.
Yay! More failure!
A long time ago in a huge HDD with properly operating firmware still far, far away....
Constellation class is lame. Let me now when I can get the Galaxy class.
LOL ohhhhhh............ dang now im just laughing at myself for actually getting that joke :/
It's pretty sad that I got that joke... :(
4 platter (thicker than standard?) designs are there largely to set firsts. Unless you really need the extra .5TB right now then stick with 1.5TB or wait for 3x640GB platter 2TB models.
I wonder how long their design team took to planet?
I get all starry-eyed thinking about 2 Terabytes.
There's a lot of space on that drive.
I've been waiting many moons for this to come out.
They're light-years ahead of the competition with this drive.
The sales numbers for this drive will rocket off the charts!
This runs rings around other drives.
Sales of lower capacity drives are going to crater.
yea if it doesnt FUCK up ill be all for it, need drives anyways for my future server...
3 x 1.5TB Externals ... All Dead within weeks
Best of luck with those 2 TB drives. They've used up patience, and there are just too many alternatives.
Great, another seagate drive that sends my data boldly where no data has gone before...
Or can come back from.
