Samsung's SyncMaster U70 is 7-inches of extra real estate
We can't get enough of these cute, fuzzy little add-on displays, and Samsung's chipping in with the new U70 SyncMaster unit which just hit Korea, and is already available in Europe. The 7-inch display runs at a fairly standard 800 x 480 resolution, and plugs into a single USB port for power and image. It's got 200 nits of brightness, a 400:1 contrast ratio and a 140 degree viewing angle, but like most of these displays is unfortunately Windows-only at the moment. You can pick one up for 99 Euro (about $127 US), but no word on whether or when this will make it Stateside.

Add on displays are cool I suppose, but so is just buying a $50 displaylink adapter and a 19 inch monitor for close to the same price for 4 times the resolution. At least the MIMO monitors can do touchscreen, webcam and usb hub...
If my MIMO could do USB hub, I would sure like to know how... the 2nd usb plug coming out of the monitor is to provide additional power if the first port doesn't provide enough.
Why do people keep saying that!? This is for people who already have 2 monitors...
The buggers will be cool when they get wireless USB enabling you to put one of these darlings on your bedside table.
The Mimo monitors work with Macs. However, if you want to use the touchscreen one, you need to pay an extra $30 for Mac drivers.
Wireless USB is already available for about $129us at Best Buy.
Can any enlightened person tell me whether this will work with current wireless usb tech please thank you please? :-)
@wolfticket
NO. Not in the way that you are thinking of, most likely. I'm working on a little project with a MIMO monitor to make it a wireless remote, But you need to keep in mind you need to power this things too, not just send a signal. Essentially, you're gonna have to add a battery, and it should be one big enough to power both the little monitor and the WUSB module for a reasonable amount of time, and it might as well be rechargeable.
I'm actually think of is having it plugged in separately away from my computer (so power shouldn't be an issue) and just using the wireless usb to transmit the data/video signal from my computer. The question is, will this work or does current wireless usb only work with certain compatible peripherals (such as printers and flash drives)?
The stand on the Mimo was much, much nicer. If this thing just has a picture frame style brace, you wont be able to adjust the viewing angle or raise it off the desktop. Terrible!
What's the potential down side here other than low frame rates?
Is there any kind of performance hit on a machine using a USB port for a display either to the machine itself or in the form of "tying up" the USB bus?
At least for the MIMO, it does add another process, and will bog down your CPU slightly. I'm only running an older AMD 4200x2 2.2ghz, and its never really been a problem. I'm sure any decent processor won't have a problem adding this on.
Wow
the syncmaster u70 works on macs with the display link drivers!
I'd definitely have one if it was wireless.
Couldn't get the earlier version of these to work vista x64. There's also a cpu performance hit when you use them because it's usb.
Actually, first off, this mini-monitor is NOT available throughout europe. In the Netherlands for example, it's not available. As far as I know, it's also not available in Belgium. It IS available in Germany though.
Actually, this is exactly what I'm looking for. It's cheap, it doesn't have a huge stand I have to either get rid of or work around, I don't have to upgrade my graphics card for it. I'm just worried about the 30 ms refresh rate, to be honest...I'm wondering whether I will notice that while using it as a dedicated media monitor while I'm playing games on my normal monitor.
As for people who don't see the use for it, well, fine. That's your view. For me, it's ideal. I do not have a lot of space in my home, so I have a small desk with my computer on it. It has a 24 inch widescreen monitor on it, but there's not way I can fit another full size screen on there. The way I use my computer though, I do need an additional screen (or at least I want one). And in fact, I would LIKE it to be a smaller screen. Up until now, I've been using my archos 605 media player for media watching while playing games and doing my design work full screen on my main monitor. But that has a lot of drawbacks. So this type of small screen has a lot of advantages for me.
I am now considering going over to Germany (from the Netherlands) to buy one of these.... that is, unless I can find a good mailorder company that can deliver here. I will need to read a good review first though, which addresses my concerns about the refrsh rate....
$99 euro is now $127 USD, remember when it was like $175 USD. Man things are evening out fast.
down down down goes the euro!
Is that a Samsung display showing an HP mini 1000?
The NC10 must feel like its being cheated on.
Nice car...
800x480 is a standard resolution?
Ok, first cellphones, then mini-laptops, and now monitors. Why is the US falling so far behind in technology?? It's like NOBODY wants to sell stuff to us anymore. We've got moneyz! I swear! (it's not completely worthless... yet)
Confidence is down and these are low risk products.
Netbooks are not a big commitment, theyre $300 dollars of disposable cash.
Mobile phones are the sort of thing you upgrade when you dont want to buy a new laptop.
These are an alternative to buying a whole new monitor (that oddly works out cheaper!)
This is credit crunch gold, cheap disposable electronics. Leave it to the East to serve up all the risky high end stuff, that quite frankly they do better.
I use windows so that is good.
Also these are Ok but with the touch ability they would be much nicer.
