Creative quietly intros MovieWorks HD iPod dock
Not that Creative hasn't dabbled in the HD iPod dock arena before, but it's been awhile since the company has introduced a new one. Quietly, secretly, the outfit has pushed a fresh one out in the Cambridge Soundworks line, and it's satisfactorily titled MovieWorks HD. The device does about what you'd expect by outputting iPod video and audio (via HDMI) onto one's TV and / or sound system, though Creative points out that this one is the only one with its own Xtreme Fidelity, X-Fi Crystallize and X-Fi CMSS-3D technology -- so yeah, take that for whatever it's worth. Those who detest cables can also snag the optional wireless receiver, but first you'll need to pony up $249.99 for the dock itself.

Regardless of how well off financially I might possibly be, I still feel poor when I see these ads "ONLY $XXX.xx" as if the ONLY part sweepingly justifies the absurd cost.
that's some great photoshop work there with the reflection.
But one thing is sure, no one will visit your crappy site.
U looklike u saw a ghost!
Who the heck puts enough movies on their Ipod to actually need a $250 Dock?
To begin with, the Ipod doesn't even play high resolution H.264 files well enough to need this.
A better investment would be just to spend $200 on a good Oppo player.
That dock sure looks nice-oh wait, "iPod not included"?! Awww.. sheesh. Nevermind, then!
Considering most people don't have HD videos on their iPod, this seems like a waste since you can buy much cheaper ones that output SD video. And coming from someone who has an X-Fi desktop card, the "enhancements" are terrible and also a waste.
With the exception of people bringing their iPods to your house I can't think of any situation where this would be preferable to the less expensive Apple TV
This is the one instance where the apple branded product is cheaper... savor the moment.
I really miss Henry Kloss. :-(
...ok...
...first if all...
...it upscales your movies to HD...
...and secondly, engadget is a biased git...
Are you kidding? I have another firefox window open on it with refreshevery set to 250 ms!
The extension is 'reloadevery', not 'refreshevery', sorry about that.
I still think it's funny how Creative make loads of docks for iPods... but do they have one for one of their OWN MP3 players? No!
(ok maybe one...)
The remote is ONLY $70 more. I'm sure they have a $50 HDMI cable they want to sell you as well.
The ironic thing is Creative *still* has yet to make more than one or two specified docks for *any* of its current players.
I wonder if that's one of the reasons Creative went after Apple so adamantly? I mean hell, if you can't manage to support your own products in a sensible fashion, find a way to go after the stuff that the competition is selling!
I used to be a HUGE Creative fanboy, but since they discontinued the best player they ever made, The Creative Vision: M, and over-diluted their product line with a ton of small-capacity DAP's that everyone forgets about before they even manage to come out, I gave up caring about what they do. Hell, they can't even figure out how to market their products successfully!
Oh, to think about what a company once was...
yeah tthey make great products, but they need some better direction. They have way too many products. YOu can't win like that.
Yeah, the black iPod with the reflection of a white iPod is creeping me out.
Yeah, but notice how everything that was black is now white....
Useless piece of junk! As soon as the X-Fi is mentioned, you know that what the signal path does is, sound get converted to analog inside with it $2 DAC chip, output to this box, and they convert it back to digital (hence the HDMI), and then let the TV/sound-sys to reconvert it back to analog.
The sound would be so bad on top of the already bad sound from ipod, it's not even funny. Whys the only company that can get a digital signal out of ipod in this digital age is a small Audio company (Wadia). Why nobody wants an spdif out of ipod? Is the $5 parts for spdif too much to add in the design for AAPL ($91.20)?
I think these docks are now becoming a must have gadget
no matter how much you idiots spam, we are not going to follow your links.
FAIL.
Most of you have missed the point. All of your videos are upconverted to HD. Therefor every video on your ipod looks better on your 50" LCD TV. Normally they would look like crap. The videos will not look perfect but they will look better. Also the major advantage not listed above is that all the funky Creative audio processing allows audio to be output as DTS 5.1. Although not originally in a 5.1, it will make everything on the ipod sound better. Maybe not better, but more enjoyable. This allows you to own an ipod and essentially use it as an apple tv. It will also preform better.
$250 isn't a ton for what this product does. DLO is roughly the same price, no DTS. Meridian is double, no DTS.
So although I can't stand Creative products, I think this needs a second look.
