Acer's Aspire One trims the fat, upcoming slimmer model pictured
At just over an inch thick it's hard to think of a little laptop like Acer's Aspire One as being chubby -- but that doesn't stop us from looking longingly at other, skinnier options in the pipeline. Apparently aware of our wandering eye, Acer is set to release a thinner model that, according to speculation, will buck the netbook storage trend by being SSD-only. Beyond that little is known about this streamlined portable, but you can be sure we'll be keeping an eye out for more info -- between fleeting glances at other hot arrivals, of course.

This sounds promising.
Gah, there are so many options!
Options as in choices of netbooks :P
"At just over an inch thick it's hard..."Thats what she said!
Since it looks like the 10" Acer is ehh...and the Dell Mini 10 is WAY WAY too expensive...so far...this does look promising...I wonder how long we'll have to wait...
I found waiting for the next model is impossible, after perpetually waiting a year i finally just bought the Eee 1000HE, its in the mail.
This is the netbook war, and everyone wants to be THE brand of netbooks. As soon as one brands model out does another they all have to put out a press release showing how they have even better stuff down the pipeline.
Go for the Asus 1002ha, it is sleek and sexy thanks to the brushed aluminum exterior. Got it from zipzoomfly for only 399. And with the Asus, you can easily change out the RAM and hard drive, Acer is not know for making their netbooks easily upgradeable, and from recent reports, you are gonna be stuck on the Mini 10 at 1gb at least for a little while.
Where is that Netbook Air?
me likey!
Why do companies not respect their customers.
Release a new model then tease with a nicer model soon after. Bit of a slap in the face me thinks.
Now....get back to work!! No...seriously!
"Release a new model then tease with a nicer model soon after. Bit of a slap in the face me thinks."
Welcome to the world of marketing.
Its a very nice looking netbook.
I've been using a netbook for a while now and 1024x600 is barely passable.
Only the Dellk and HP will have 10" netbook with 1366x768 resolution but the price willbe kinda high.
If onlyy this netbook or the 1002ha comes with higher resolution, I'm all over it.
This does indeed look very very promising. I for one am a fan of SDDs in Netbooks.
If it doesn't weigh more than 1kg and runs linux this could be my next netbook :-)
SDD=SSD
the thing that throws me off of SSDs is the price of decent storage size, and no swap partitions (virtual ram) (well you could have a swap but it would eat the life span of the SSD for breakfast).
the thing I like about SSDs: you can run with the device 'on' and not worry about head crashes... unless you forget to tie your shoes.
@CosterMonger
I run without swap, never missed it.
The original Aspire One takes an SD card to extend disk storage, something which this one might do too. If you need swap badly, set it to the external SD card.
I'd be happy with just 16GB of SSD storage, why do I need more than that ? It's just a Netbook, not my main computer.
For everything else I have a pocket sized 320GB WD passport just a USB connection away.
I think I would load it up with software, games, video, and music.
(I know it's not my main, but I can't control when inspiration hits me, it would be nice to immediately)
good point on the swap, realistically I would upgrade to the max ram.
That one looks like the Dell XPS M1330
This makes me so glad that I've procrastinated getting one of these. It's so small and nice.
The only thing holding me (and I believe many others) back from getting one of these cute gadgets is actually the somewhat-imminent appearance of Ion platform in newer models. Screw you Intel with your lame graphics chip!
Be patient my friends...
So, wait - does this mean they're also bucking the netbook trend of gradually making them bigger and bigger until they're not really netbooks any more? Aspire One is 9" right? If this new one is still 9", but a bit thinner, that'll be great.
I'd still be concerned about battery life - with a properly small system i.e. not attaching a six-cell monster battery to it, there's nothing much they can do about that until CPU/chipset/other components improve.
