Nokia NAM 5800 XpressMusic pulled from NYC flagship store, replaced with Euro edition
While we did manage to eventually commandeer 3G on our Nokia flagship store-purchased NAM 5800 XpressMusic -- albeit not first without leaving the Chicago area -- The Nokia Blog went by the NYC store yesterday afternoon and found out the phone had been pulled from shelves. We put in a call to the store ourselves and confirmed that the NAM version is currently being eschewed in favor of the Euro-spec edition. No word on when it'll return, but we're still waiting anxiously for Nokia's official statement on the matter.

I like the idea of a guitar pick but it needs to have more of a point......
Current resistive screens aren't accurate enough to tell the difference so there's not much point.
Still more accurate than capasitive ones....
@Gnormie
"...but it needs to have more of a point..."
"...so there's not much point..."
No Pun intended? Ha-ha!
What sort of a dick is going to use a guitar pick on a handset. Or is guitar pick some sort of gay rocker's euphemism for a stylus.
So this is a Nokia touchscreen cellphone that plays music. There's already is an outstanding device of this type. It's called an iPhone. It plays music and does about 10,000 things more.
Does the NAM edition come loaded with songs by Jimi Hendrix and CCR?
CCR?
Who!?
CCR - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Go get yourself some vinyl and a basement my man.
Im still confused to what NAM means!
It seems engadget uses these acronyms once, then expects you to know them in all subsequent articles
We're not all engadgetaholics you know!!!
Yo, fish. NAM = North American/USA Model. GOT IT???????
Yo, thanks P-Dawg! Word. [makes weird hand gesture]
Here is the reason the phone is being pulled:

Yes everybody already knows.
Get you facts straight. The NAM version is not being pulled because of the speaker. There is no evidence that the problem will even affect the US version. The problem is most of us who have the phone are not getting the US 3g signal we were promised.
damnit NOKIA!!!!!!!!!
This is exactly why Nokia sucks. Go shove all your crappy 5800s up Olli-Pekka Kalashnikov's ass!
At least they have the balls to own up to the problem and even replace the phone which some company won't
This is so fucked up. I was about to write the same thing about shoving them up his ass.
But I still like my Nokia phone. I'm becoming an iLoveApple-iLoveNokia hybrid. A mutant ;__;

Just go kick your self in the nuts, "iloveApple"
oh right, apple fans don't have any
Yes. Because Apple has never had any problems with their iPhones. Ever. /sarcasm.
Nokia should have done the other kinda display....not the resistive crap..it sucks!!
This is a mid--tiered device not a flagship, Capacitative screens would've made it more expensive. That said they're still gonna use resistive for the n97..FFS it's a flagship device!! that said, I'm stil gonna get it
It's resistive because that's more versatile. Have fun with handwriting recognition on a capacitive screen!
alco my man, you gotta look at the bright side. You can use it with gloves and whatnot AND it's presence will turn Apple loving homies into bloodthirsty maniacs. Damn, now ain't that something.
Have you used it? I have and it works well. It's far from crappy.
Canceling my pre-order today. This problem is probably going to take weeks if not a couple months to rectify, just like all the recalled Xperia handsets when the NAM version of that was released. I'm not going to let Nokia sit on a 400 dollar hold for god knows how long while they fix this blunder.
they told me you can't cancel pre-orders.
I called after posting that and they didn't tell me I couldn't cancel, just that they couldn't do it on a Sunday and I would have to call back during the week. You could be right though, but it seems unlikely that you couldn't get a refund on a product that hasn't even shipped. There is a way to cancel it though if they do end up giving me a hard time about it. I won't divulge my whole plan, but let me just put it this way. When I had to change the shipping address on my pre-order they weren't able to simply alter the order information, they had to cancel the order and place a new one. That should be enough to get you your cancellation ;)
and just to reiterate to anyone else who preordered this phone, as an example, the Xperia NAM version was originally launched in November, but was recalled due to faulty 3G chips, and wasn't available again until late January. Just sayin'.
+1000
Good plan! Yeah i called on Saturday and spoke to sales. The lady was very nice and told me they should be shipping out this week. I asked again if I could cancel and she said I couldn't. I don't know I mean at least they are waiting to fix it before they ship it out to all the pre-orders thats nice. I just want my phone! hahaha
You have to be European by Nokia standards! well eh, only way possible is via a cellular phone.
there are a lot of people who have not even used the device and just want to bash because they are apple fan boys. the 3g iphone is not the best at 3G holding signal either, and lets not get started on at&t's network since the iphone launch.
What is the majot difference between european and nam models?
Just the 3G bands
Thanks for the Nokia love, Engadget.
I'm kinda lost why this matters. What's the difference between the two versions?
And thanks to the person who explained NAM earlier in the comments. I was lost on that one too.
NAM is version is 850/1900 MHz, so it is 3G that works in the US with AT&T; Euro version runs 3G at 2100 MHz and therefore no 3G in the US.
Maybe I will get the Philippine version. All the Nokia phones I have bought from there work with AT&T's 3G network, for example, my Nokia E51 works on AT&T's 3G and their 3.5G network in Manila.
I still wonder to this day how a country with so many problems can have all the latest and greatest cell phone tech than any other industrialized nation?
On a side note, anyone knows why we can't have N97-like widgets on 5800? Something like this :

Before buy please read about all 5800's problems here

I've got a European 5800XM and came back from 4 days in NYC last week. I had no problems what so ever with the 3G connection in NYC. It worked just great! It did swap between Edge & 3G without any problem.
The phone was shipped with firmware 11.0 something and after upgrading to v20.0 something the phone is extremley fast in the menus.
My girlfriend has the iPhone which is very nice but I like this one just as much. 2 very different phones and should not really be compared since they don't even have the same kind of OS and screen (iPhone favour).
I am calling BS! There is no way the Euro version of the 5800 got a 3G signal in NY. The frequency that the Euro is using is not available in the US.
Here's a brief, useless statement from a Nokia spokeswoman:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/7919413.stm
@ Joshua: You are absolutely right! Called my friend back and I was mistaken! The connection we got was E, I assume that is Edge.
Sorry for that! But the phone worked great any how!
I unpacked my 5800xpress last month. 1st problem - I am lucky to run it 2 days - very low use - before re-charge needed. Advertised specs world wide quote battery life as up to 5hrs talk & up to 400hrs s/by.. By my calculations if I turn it off and leave it in a drawer it just might make the advertised distance. Not happy. Also clock loses 2-4 minutes per week. C'mon even a bad chinese knock-off rolex keeps perfect time! I miss my E90
