Sprint holding Pre "launch lunch" on June 5?
Another possible Pre launch date is precisely the last thing the world needs, but that's what we're getting, so check it: a Boy Genius Report-leaked slide of some sort seems to indicate that Sprint employees will be participating in a Pre "launch lunch" Friday, June 5 at noon, which raises a few interesting possibilities. First, it could mean that they're prepping for a June 7 retail launch, which would line up with the Best Buy rumor and fall into line with Sprint's common policy of launching on Sundays. Second, it could mean that Sprint's trying to really go for broke with a riot-inducing evening launch on June 5. Third, this could be totally bogus; the typo in "Employee Benfits" trips us up a bit, though we've seen typos in legit documents before. Fourth, it's still entirely possible that neither Sprint nor Palm know the exact date -- we're guessing the firmware still hasn't gone gold, and until it has, they can't be putting an immutable stake in the ground. It's interesting to note that Palm's Jon Rubenstein will be speaking at All Things D the week before this -- which we'll be at live, coincidentally -- so that'd certainly make an apropos place to announce something spectacular like this, wouldn't it? Stay tuned, friends.

FINALLY!!!
be afraid of the N97
Why on earth would an American cell carrier be afraid of the N97? Symbian has zero presence in the US and the chances of a carrier picking up a high-end Symbian device like the N97 and selling it for a competitive $200 price are pretty damn near zero.
Whoa, now. Does Palm still really intend to sell this vaporware product right before WWDC. I almost feel sorry for Palm because a few days after the Pre is launched, nobody is going to remember it when the new iPhone is introduced. It really doesn't matter when the Pre gets introduced since only loyal Palm fans are going to be buying it.
Coincidence it's right around the Apple conference?
No, it's called a "strategic business plan."
You should know that, being The Industry Standard, and all.
Yeah, I'd say it's pretty much.... you.
Hahahah... that was gold.
No. Palm and Sprint want to release the pre before the new iphone announcement at all costs to have a successful launch.
I'm sure they wish they had more time, but they can't risk Apple stealing all the hype. It's for the better anyway for us consumers. They HAVE to release it someday.
Lunch? Apple?
Now I'm hungry.
Hey! come in and get lunch because it's going to be your last meal when people tear you limb from limb tonight when they storm the store looking for this phone
or people storm out looking for the possible new iPhone which would easily crush the pre. who knows.
On June 7th I'll use my Pre to cut/paste your ass straight to iHell.
Not from any web pages, you aren't!!
(sorry, I couldn't resist!!)
Here's hoping the Pre lives up to half the hype.
Can anyone explain why people should be really excited about this phone? I am not trying to put it down, just confused because by all accounts it appears a fairly average slider phone, maybe I am wrong?!?
MAYBE?
no man you ARE wrong
Very wrong. Rather than explain it just go read up on WebOS.
You are very wrong
You've never even bothered to read about the phone have you?
http://www.engadget.com/hub/palm-pre
all you have to do is YouTube "Palm Pre" and you will see why everyone is so excited about it. and it looks more slick to me than an "average slider" regardless.
Thats exactly the type of ignorant "only-look-at-the-hardware" viewpoint that has held back the smartphone market for so long with crappy software and even worse user interfaces.. Its NOT JUST ABOUT THE HARDWARE! Though to be fair, the Pre not only has an excellent user interface and browser, but it'll have the best processing hardware on the market when it comes out..
Love the quote at the bottom!
"The KEY to the PRE is Customer Success!"
not
Reading comprehension fail?
wanna try that again there adam?
That totally did suck, huh? Back to kindergarten...
you are such a loser
Come on Palm already, my phone is 3 years old now and I need a great upgrade as Pre promises to be !
Still boring me to death.
Check out that video. It's not boring ;P.

Good video. Palm!!!
Good video. Palm!!!
That clip was so great!
=]
I have to say that this has become quite irritating...
I agree. If they know a date, they should just tell us.
Don't know the exact date but It's coming out in June for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
My company has a fleet w/ Sprint and our Sprint rep confirmed =)!
june 5?
no more looking @ the prerelease preview version of this unpreorderable phone:)
This is good. Competition in general is good. It's obviously no coincidence that they are going to try and release the phone before Apple's WWDC. They lost a lot of their edge when Apple announced iPhone OS 3.0. They can't afford to lose anything else.
They didn't really lose much of an edge. The people I know who have gotten 3.0 are still upgrading to the Pre. IMO, they could almost be helping out Pre.
I was hoping for the palm pre as my next upgrade to my iphone, but i just can't ignore the Nokia N97, the whole web is going ballistic for this phone, If Nokia keeps their promise and release this phone in the U.S by June for $699 or lower, then it will definitely be my next phone.
I work at Best Buy in Magnolia Home Theater, and I can tell you that my Best Buy Mobile friends and co-workers have had their hands on the Pre for a while now and that the scheduled release for Best Buy is June 7th. $199 on contract just like the report says too.
And how do they like it?
Anyone have a green badge? Apparently they'll tell you the launch date if you do.
I was excited about this phone, but with all the new Android phones popping up I don't know how much the Pre will have to wow me know to convert me.
It's fake. They are using the same pictures from the Palm UI shots.
http://www.engadget.com/photos/palm-pre-official-ui-shots-1/1290307/
Yea, it's stock press photos of the UI. That's what they are kind of used for.
woohoo, thats my birthday, they should invite me and give me a free phone.
I like their wordmark
I recently found out that, to get a Pre, I have to change from my SERO plan to the *new* employee referral plan (ERP or something like that) which is twice as expensive ($60/mo instead of $30/mo). Are you joking?
F Sprint.
When my current 2yr contract expires next month I'm just going to get a $30/mo iPhone on my parents' AT&T plan ($10 line + $20 data). I was excited for the Pre but not because it's much better than an iPhone, just because it was the first decent phone to hit Sprint in years (I've been rockin a terrible MotoQ for 2yrs).
You can't do the 3G iphone on AT&T like that - plus you'll lose unlimited texting. The new ERP program on Sprint is the best deal out of the major carriers for unlimited data/texting. Yeah SERO was a better deal, but it's unreasonable to expect Sprint to keep subsidizing your usage on phones that have much higher back end needs than when SERO was available(it's similar to how you couldn't get BIS/BES on Blackberries on SERO without paying extra for it). Synergy on the Pre and the backup system probably require Sprint to implement back end infrastructure similar to what is needed for BIS (if not more complex).
By that logic....
Did your cable operator give you the full HD tier when they rolled it out for the same price as your basic cable package? No? F them.
Did Burger King give you the $7 XT Steak burger for the same price as a Jr. Whopper when it came out? No? F them.
Look, I know the SERO plans were awesome, but you gotta face the fact that $60 E+ is still a heck of a deal for unlimited everything. I think all can agree that while $30 is a great price, it is too good to last. And certainly no reason to say "F" anyone. If you want to keep your SERO plan, that's fine, you just can't activate the coolest phone since the Jesus phone on that plan.
