Turns out the
rumors were true. Verizon's getting into the netbook business starting May 17th with the release of the HP Mini 1151 NR. Specs for this 10.1-inch, 3G-capable portable are exactly what we heard via
leaked documents, but for those just joining us: 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD, two USB 2.0 ports, 802.11b/g, SD slot, and Windows XP Home with Service Pack 3. As for the pricing, it's not quite as bad as previously suggested -- $200 after $50 mail-in rebate and a two-year commitment. Frankly, we'd prefer paying a little more upfront on Verizon's
MiFi 2200 EV-DO router and a netbook / laptop of our choosing, with the
same Mobile Broadband data plans, but hey, we can't disagree with having more options.
Guys, this is SO lame! Especially in light of Verizons CTO saying that they will have to drop their assinine pricing to stay competitive long term. $199 SUBZIDIZED?! They are making about that in Commissions aloen with activation, you can get a brand new one at best buy for only $100 more.
Lets see, AT&T for $49 with faster 3.5G or slow & expensive Verizon for $200. Ummm, yeaahhhh....
lol @ the relative speed comment
While you are correct about this being a bad deal, don't even try to compare AT&T's 3G (what you call 3.5G which is incorrect) to Verizon's network. Verizon eats AT&T for lunch nationwide as far as coverage is concerned. While AT&T concentrates on the cities, Verizon's network is everywhere AT&T is and in the rural areas and on the highways where AT&T offers EDGE service for their customers...and by the way, AT&T is also $59.99 per month, as is Verizon.
Speed-wise, I have compared AT&T to Verizon and I have found their 3G card speeds comparible...and Sprint's EVDO Rev A speed is the same as both of them, also. In area where there are a lot of iPhones, Verizon and Sprint's 3G are faster than AT&T. But for my money, I will take Verizon or Sprint's data product any day over AT&T. When Sprint teams with Clear with the 3G/4G card, look out everyone else!!!
As long as there's a 5GB limit, they can all forget about this guy being a customer.
5GB=
5 days of web browsing
or 2 movies in divx and 2 days of web browsing
Verizon Wireless = Crap
@Stevenfb
yea, bash verizon all you want, AT&T and Sprint have the same freakin cap
Australia has the same 5gb caps but ive learnt to live with it. I used to use roughly 20gb a month, but now its its down to about 6gb.
Downloading more than 5 tv shows is out, and so is youtubing. If ALL you do is surf the web you will be fine. I used to bitorrent all my tv shows but not anymore :-P
I have 100mb left that has to last me for another 6 days...i wonder if i can do it.
@ adderz: I'm a atheist but i pray to god that i never have to learn how to live on 6gb. i probably use 6gb of bandwidth on porn alone (what can i say it gets boring here in my moms basement)
What they don't tell you is that it isn't the usual Windows SP3, it's a scaled down version (not sure in what ways). I have an Mini-1000 and installed Windows 7 Ultimate RC instead, works great.
mmmm, wonder if it will be able to buy insurance? lol
and what will the warranty cover....hehe we'll see.
mmmm, wonder if customers will be able to buy insurance and how the warranty would work....but i guess we'll see.
What's the dude writing on with that pen? The netbook?
Finally Australia gets a better deal for once.
We can get the Mini 9 for $59 a month and $0 upfront.
Our plans are better as well, 5gb for $39 is the usual, im actually getting it for $34 because i have a mobile plan with the same company.
In saying that, during peak time (3pm to 10pm) speeds suck, they go down to dialup, i wonder if its the same with America?
@Adderz, Maybe $39 =5GB is fine for now but I'm picking it's going look like a poor deal by the time you're halfway through that 24 month contract. I'm just annoyed that it's the only way to get a 3G modem in a Dell 9 in Australia. :(
Well im about 7 months into my contract, and its not looking too bad :-P
Im managed to cut down my internet usage, i miss watching youtube but *shrugs*
I just wish peak time wasnt so bad.
And yeah, i was going to get the Mini 9 with the inbuilt 3G but i needed the usb stick for other computers so i just bought the mini 9 and stick separately. At least i *own* the Mini 9
Oh I get it! "Connected. Portable. Affordable" refers to the mug, pen, and eye glasses...
Youve got to be REALLY careful about putting a new OS on one of the GOBI systems. I have the Acer Aspire One with AT&T and I thre Win 7 on it from day one, took lots of digging to figure out how to enable the WWAN. It doesnt use AT&Ts usual software as its native to Qualcomm. AlsoNO version of Linux will work with the GOBI. As for HP putting a 'stripped down' SP3 I think thats bullshit, I have never heard of such a thing. The Acer had gool ol Home SP3...
$200 after $50 rebate, so you have to pay $250 for a provider locked netbook, while one can buy a regular netbook for only a couple dollars more? Fail. I guess this plays into US consumers that love paying $$$ for locked products. I expect a subsidized netbook to be free, or almost free, not $200.
With this deal, Verizon is proving the old adage, "There is a sucker born every minute." People, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. In this case, those who bite on this deal are truly suckers! Go to Costco, buy an Aspire One for $299, get a MiFi card with a Verizon 5GB data card built in and at least the overrage will go from a stupid $250 per GB to $50 per GB. At least Verizon is moving in the right direction, something AT&T has not learned yet with their stupid data caps and overrage plans at well over Verizon's.
is it even possible to make an uglier wallpaper? ...and then to use black for the icon text background?
you'd think verizon might consider hiring a graphic designer. oh i get it, they wanna make the netbook look cheap. that's a good thing, right???
I would never get this as long as there such a crummy cap. I don't understand the appeal of netbooks anyway it seems like they would always reach a point where it would drive me crazy being too small to do any real work on it long term. I could see using it as a cheap kindle replacement. I mean a KindleDX is $500, I can get a netbook for $350. Also what happens when those annoying Windows updates come through which seem to be EVERY freaking day now. Does though downloads count against the cap?
Sprints everything (phone) plan has NO CAP, I can even use my phone as my modem and download to my hearts content.
Can I get a mifif card and connect to my phone account instead of having to tie up the phone?
The Verizon 10" Netbook is a bad deal. First off, Verizons wireless broadband coverage is a joke...$59 and it's still not unlimited ?
Second 3G is almost old news since everyone is rolling out 4G.
Third, without the 2 year contract the netbook is $599 and it only works on Verizon's network, like a phone, so you are stuck with the option of day passes at $15 a day.
I got an Acer 11.6 " with better resolution, same processor, VGA out put (which the Verizon doesn't have) 160 GB hard drive, 2GB of RAM , 5.1 audio, full sized keyboard, and many more bells and whistles for $329. Along with my Sprint Broadband USB card for $49 unlimited (which I already had), a Blue Tooth USB adapter ($10), and the free WIMAX drivers, it is Wifi, WIMAX, and Bluetooth ready and it is a much better option that the Verizon 10" HP, or Verizon 10" Dell (which starts at $399).
It's one thing to have a phone that only works on a certain network, but why would I buy a computer that is so limited ?
There are much better options out there.
