LG, Samsung have both sold over 20m touchscreen phones
Just a hunch, call us crazy, but these latest numbers from LG and Samsung seem to indicate that touchscreen phones are pretty popular -- both companies have sold over 20 million of 'em. That's somewhere around 1.6 million touchscreens a month for the past two years, and with new Samsung sets like the i7500 and LG's massive array of Windows Mobile devices set to hit this year, we doubt things will slow down anytime soon.

That's not an iPhone.

Yay! good boy
You get a cookie!
AHAHAH 20M non-iPhones?
Your move Apple...
murmermer @ May 18th 2009 5:49PM
apple sold 12 million by itself... it takes 2 of the worlds leading mobile manufacturers to compete... STEVE JOBS FTW!!!
MacVicta @ May 18th 2009 5:53PM
murmermer, Apple has sold 21 million iPhones.
And from what I'm reading, LG and Samsung sold 20 million a piece, so it would be 40 million combined.
milrtime83 @ May 18th 2009 5:55PM
@murmermer, uhh that was 20mil each, not total so they both sold more than Apple.
Peter @ May 18th 2009 5:56PM
murmermer, can you read?
The article says "both" companies sold over 20 million; meaning each company sold over 20 million, or a total (of the two companies) of over 40 million. Either you are an Apple fanboy or you cannot comprehend the English language. I think the latter is the correct choice.
sweet greggo @ May 18th 2009 5:57PM
@murmermer
I hope Apple invents reading comprehension soon.
murmermer @ May 18th 2009 6:07PM
sorry guys
I had a case of "selective reading"...
Bill @ May 18th 2009 6:49PM
LG and Samsung say, "All your touchscreen are belong to US!"
Quantumphysics @ May 18th 2009 7:28PM
NOTHING SAMSUNG or LG have even measure up to the iPhone.
I DON'T CARE ABOUT LOW RANKS.
Truth is, iPhone - despite being sold exclusively on AT&T and a handful of other networks in other countries is not only the better phone, but, would be UNSTOPPABLE if they offered a CDMA version right now.
Mark Anderson @ May 18th 2009 7:32PM
Really? Why is it being outsold in Europe by the 5800 and LG and Samsung's offerings then?
Obi-Habby @ May 18th 2009 9:11PM
Why did I get downranked. I am a proud T-Mobile HTC Hero/G1 owner. Please don't interpret that joke as iPhone fanboyism =(
CleverEndeavor @ May 18th 2009 10:02PM
damned apple fanboys, cant you just let Samsung and LG bask in their glory for a moment?
CleverEndeavor @ May 18th 2009 10:04PM

theyre all using copy and paste.

Multiple personality disorder?
Such a shame.
P.S. What kind of vaginas do you get to see?
sweet greggo @ May 18th 2009 6:05PM
@alex
An article I read last week said as of March Apple had moved 17million iphones.
MacVicta @ May 18th 2009 6:13PM
21 million iPhones and 16 million iPod touches.
G @ May 18th 2009 6:25PM
@Schweppes:
First of all i'm no fan of the iPhone. But that so called argument could also be applied to the unknown numbers of Samsungs and LGs that have been returned.
I'm waiting for the Samsung i8910 HD, it looks like one of the best phones ever.
Dillinger @ May 18th 2009 5:53PM
wow all of those phones and i cant think of the name of a single one.
Obi-Habby @ May 18th 2009 6:00PM
Samsung I think of the Omnia, and LG I think of the iPhone prototype aka the LG Prada.
sweet greggo @ May 18th 2009 6:03PM
@Dillinger
You would have had to live in a cave for the last 2 years not have heard of any LG or Samsung touchscreen phones.
Think. Then type (optional).
Mark Anderson @ May 18th 2009 7:12PM
The Samsung Tocco will have accounted for millions of those.
Matt @ May 18th 2009 11:43PM
Yeah, exactly. And look at all the money Apple dumps into marketing and advertising. You can't name a single Samsung or LG, yet they've sold as many.
Krewe @ May 18th 2009 5:54PM
I just got an LG Voyager, so I'm getting a kick...
Seriously, I didn't think I'd like a non-iPhone touch screen (not to mention the upfront and monthly costs), but the Voyager is growing on me. Considering I used to have basic flip phones, it's the best phone I've ever owned.
ronald.raygun @ May 18th 2009 6:06PM
now that the phones are starting to get better interfaces and are much more usable i imagine these numbers will get much better.
its also funny to me that, though the iphone didnt invent the touchscreen, it's the one that really pushed a lot of these companies to start putting out more models and better innovation, we can thank them for that at least.
Steve Butler @ May 18th 2009 6:09PM
It's mainly due to the fact they just keep on churning out new models.
Corrie Mayo @ May 18th 2009 9:28PM
Thank God some is actually thinking! What samsung and lg omit is how many of EACH model has been sold. There are 3 models of the iphone out and they've sold about 21 mil. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_iphones_have_been_sold
Now someone do me a favor and tell me what touchscreen model has matched them in sales in the same timeframe.
this would be an honest comparison...
minesasecret @ May 18th 2009 10:51PM
Well the LG Viewty sold 6.5 million which of course can't top the iphones but I mean it's definitely not bad. I might love the iPhone just as much as you do, although I own a G1, but there's no need to say that the other phones companies aren't producing capable phones..
I do admit though that I wish some of the newer touch screen phones would come with a more user friendly OS. Android is great, but pre cupcake it felt like beta software.. and then there's the all too popular OS X, but besides those two eehhh..
But if you like your Symbian and WinMo then I'm glad you have your own opinions but for me I just don't find them as user-friendly. On the positive side, they can be a lot more functional though, but for me I'll take the ease of use while I can still use my netbook for everything else =]
Connor @ May 18th 2009 6:09PM
HTC FTW.
Eric @ May 18th 2009 6:13PM
you tease me with a i8910 picture
:-(
why?
:-(
they'll never bring it over here and i want a US warranty as on my E71
:-(
BFish @ May 18th 2009 6:14PM
Well done. Nokia has sold less than 5M.
Major4Play @ May 18th 2009 6:23PM
How many touchscreen phones do nokia sell again ?
Me4u2 @ May 18th 2009 6:25PM
Duh... Thats because Nokia launched their first touch phone (Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic) 4months ago compared to samsung and LG which have released a dozen or more touch phones b/w 2007 and 2009.
BFish @ May 18th 2009 6:28PM
@Major4Play:
All what they have managed to develope in past two years: One (isn't really touchphone with resistive screen and stylus).
Me4u2 @ May 18th 2009 6:48PM
@Major4Play
But at least the Nokia 5800 sells like hotcakes... Sold out in Russia in less than 24hrs, Sold out in the UK (its sells so fast that you'll have to wait 2-3weeks before getting one), currently selling close to 2 million units every month and it is UK's No. 1 selling portable music player, trumping the ipod classic, ipod touch and iphone.
Me4u2 @ May 18th 2009 6:50PM
Sorry the above comment was meant for BFish
Epsilon-Not @ May 18th 2009 9:49PM
A phone with a resistive touchscreen and a stylus doesn't count as a touchphone? Seriously?
See, coming up with these stupid idiosyncratic definitions is what has left the word "smartphone" all but meaningless, now you want to redefine "touchphone" to exclude most phones with touch screens?
And some of us (I admit not all, and maybe it's just a tiny minority) like the stylus and are sad to see it go...
jason @ May 18th 2009 6:26PM
This site is a bit obsessed with cell phones... Just sayin,... the site should be called cellgadget.
john @ May 18th 2009 7:21PM
they love comparing everything to apple products..esp ifone.
Kevin K @ May 18th 2009 6:36PM
Sorry Sammy, but my Glyde does not count as a touchscreen phone. It's more like a poke-yell-poke-yell-reboot-poke-throw-stab phone.
Blacky @ May 18th 2009 6:50PM
Shall I remind you that Sony-Ericsson has been selling touch-screen smartphones for some years now, the P-series.
Some people complained a lot about their Symbian UIQ OS. But to be honest after using it for two years now and I think this OS is rock solid. Much more stable than Nokia's S60.
Touch screen capabilities are far away from the Iphone, but than again, touch screens were more of a niche when these phones were around.
I own a P1i.
GoGoGadget @ May 18th 2009 7:08PM
...in Soviet Russia, touchscreen phones sold LG and Sammy!!!
zzz @ May 18th 2009 7:10PM
And Immersion haptic/vibration feedback has been in each and every one of those 40 mil.
Nokia 5800 and N97 too.
When are force feedback cell games coming?
Guru @ May 18th 2009 7:24PM
Wow so more than iPhone , not bad.
Amazing how many people settle for inferior wannabee devices.,
I sane!!!
Alexx @ May 18th 2009 7:36PM
Yeah I know!
Over 17 million iPhones sold. I mean, what there they thinking?
big J @ May 18th 2009 7:37PM
I'm not an iPhone fan or anything but both Samsung and LG's touchscreen offering blow hard for the most part.
singj65 @ May 18th 2009 7:36PM
Touchscreen is the future. It's coming to computers now. I don't want to see this. Think of all of the fingerprints.
