MicroSD-to-USB Mobidapter is a smartphone's best friend
Okay, so maybe it's just a microSD-equipped smartphone's best friend, but you get the idea. Unlike traditional [insert flash format here]-to-USB adapters, Elan's Mobidapter provides a direct bridge from your microSD slot to your external USB hard drive. The result? Dead simple phone backups and file transfers, all without the use of a PC in the middle. Elan asserts that the currently unpriced device will begin shipping in mid-June, and if you're still baffled about how this thing operates, check the yawn-inducing demonstration vid after the break.

Wow very innovative. I really like the idea!
This is stupid. MircoSD cards with USB adapter is a better alternative. I use one and it is as simple as swapping misroSD card from phone to USB adapter and its really small, I lost one already.
Youd wanna hope its reinforced otherwise it will simply snap off at the microsd portion of the adapter.
Too bad my memory card is under my battery.
Not very good, wont work in many phones where the Micro-SD slot isn't in the right place (like my Motorola Z6 for example)
It's your fault for buying a Motorola.
Wow...now THAT's what I'd call a good idea!
Simple, doesn't require a rocket scientist to get working, and gets the job done. Now the only thing we need to make sure is the thing doesn't get lost in your backpack.
But on the down side, you can only use this with phones with hot-swappable MicroSD (on the side)
Would be nice if there was another version of this (with its own power supply, etc.) that allowed you to transfer stuff between USB and MicroSD without even needing a phone...so you could use it on pones that have the card slot beneath the battery or other not-so-accessible locations.
WOW! This would be great for my rooted G1 if I ever get around to doing the apps to SD hack...
It's a cute idea but... I think it only work on a proof of concept level after that we run into problems like cost of buying gadget to the cost of buying an micro-sd card to use as a back up for your phone(s) . Some one correct me if I am missing something about this.
Brilliant. Somebody should've thought of that a while ago. Very handy.
Ok this may not matter too much to Engadget's US-based readers, but just about any Nokia S60 phone (e.g., the N95) with a memory card slot has a built-in application that allows you to back up the phone memory into the microSD card, without needing to tether the phone to a PC to do so.
So where does the power come from needed to power up my 1Tb external HDD?
Well there is no 1tb enclosure that gets its power solely from USB, therefore it would come with its own power supply. Power is an interesting question though, what about 2.5" drives that usually dont need external power, you would have to assume it doesnt supply enough.
i guess its designed for just flash drives. But if you really wanted to use a 2.5 inch drive (assuming it works) use one of those use cables with one connector at one end and two at the other, for power, and hook it to something that can provide the juice lol
Does this mean i can hook up a self-powered external HD to my PSP using an MMS to MicroSD adapter?
I don't see what the fuss is about. Just get yourself a tiny MicroSD card reader

Serves the same purpose (MicroSD to USB) and it nicely hangs on the lanyard loop of your phone.
This isn't just a MicroSD-USB adapter if you read the article...
I'd think it'd be better if it could be incorporated into a cable rather than the huge device they have. Even better would be if it was a ribbon cable for those who have the microSD slot under the battery.
Using this with a Nokia E90 would take it even closer to being a laptop in your pocket. You might not use it every day but I can see it being a life saver when you need to check out or swap files wherever you happen to be.
I would love to get my hands on one.
Awesome! Make a M2 version pls
Or you could by a phone from a decent brand that uses a standard card.
what is the memory capacity that it can support.. say my phone (5800) supports for 16gb max. n if i connect my portable hard drive of 80gb, will that still be able to take up that much?
i dont think it will be possible.. elan's website states the technical features of this gadget states that it can only support drives with maximum capacity limited by the SDHC v2 spec. standard (32GB) because it uses SDIO as the interface.
Could be handy if your phone had a TV-OUT function and you had an external hd with movies on it possibly?
Between this, USB card readers, and the microSD adapters for the the other card formats you'll see some interesting DIY projects or hacks emerge.
Most mobiles dont start reading the card until lid is closed. Have they taken care of that here?
a little large but more comveinient
will that work if your flash drive is a portable internet connection?!..and..will it be available in asian countries?!thanks..and i hope you can make a smaller version of that..
